That is one of the best "best of's" that I have.  The cover songs on the second disc are outstanding!

today i've decided i'm going to try and figure out meshuggah

violent sleep: there's like, moments here where i *get* it, but then i lose it again. and then i try to figure out what it was that i was getting. i think the real concern is that it feels pretty monotonous
catch thirtythree: this one, however. why does nobody seem to talk about this one? it's arguably their most progressive given that it's literally just one long song. and it's also more dynamic? the whole half of in death - is death that's just chill clean stuff is a real change of pace & works well, and honestly this one just seems to have better riffs too. i dunno. it's not a fantastic album but it's one that i do want to relisten to, i think

i'm gonna give a few of their other albums a bit of a spin maybe but one of these two feels like my most likely shot at figuring out what meshuggah's appeal is. even then i may still end up not getting any of their albums if i'm not feeling them hard enough. i already have a lot of other stuff these are competing with

following up my meshuggah inquiry:

destroy erase improve - this is a strange album. it's not really what i'd expect from meshuggah & still kinda has their sound but is a lot more diverse and clearly less focused on technicality. but it was decent.
chaosphere - turned this off halfway lol, really boring to my ears
nothing (remaster) - made it most of the way through this one then turned it off near the end. there were a few songs i hear people mentioning as some of the band's best but to my ears everything here ESPECIALLY sounds exactly the same
obzen - i listened to bleed, which i still dislike. i listened to dancers, which i am still indifferent to. my distaste for bleed made me decide to not listen to the rest of this, and i've already checked out most of it in the past anyways
koloss - tbh i just listened to scattered songs from this one after reading the meshuggah thread. seems ok. a lot slower than their other albums but also a bit more melodic.

i dunno why i spent so much time on this. i feel like if i get any album it'll just be catch 33 but we'll have to see. i don't wanna wait too much longer to order stuff

I feel largely the same about Meshuggah. I like a few songs here and there but the albums are just repetitive slogs. Obzen, Contradictions Collapse (this one only because it's a weird fusion of proto-Meshuggah and 80's thrash, less bludgeoning repetition and more straight up aggression), and Catch 33 seem the most interesting to me. Nothing bores the absolute fuck out of me. I listened to that one a bunch of times trying to identify why it's so well liked by fans but I just couldn't find anything there. I kinda dig Koloss for its mindless heaviness and straightforward brutality, but I only really like about half of the album.

there is at least a notable difference in a few meshuggah albums.

but really honestly. chaosphere, nothing, obzen, koloss, and violent sleep are all pretty interchangeable for the most part, as far as i've listened. so.

i relistened to catch-33 and the first third of it is pretty meh but once it gets to mind's mirrors from there onwards it's much less of a standard meshuggah album and as a result more interesting. though i still wouldn't say i really love it. it's a solid album. i might pick it up eventually but i don't think it's gonna make my set this time around

Lechuga: Besides from the great Entre 2 Mundos, this is just solid progressive metal with some djent here and there. Good stuff.
The Miraculous: I think the general opinion is the ambient/drone songs here kinda put this down and I agree - they're not bad at all, just not as interesting as the rest of the songs, which are just awesome.
Royal Blood: Reminds me of QotSA, Muse, some The White Stripes and Arctic Monkeys. Although it doesn't really reinvent anything, it's just quite solid, catchy, noisy rock songs. Me likey.
An Empty Bliss Beyond this World: I actually really like this, something that doesn't happen often (almost never) with ambient music. Probably because most songs are quite short, and they're basically old 1920s swing songs slowed down and drowning in reverb and vinyl grain. And honestly? I dig it, it's quite an immersive listen - have always had a soft spot for that kinda of old jazz/dixieland stuff.

Ys: Ok actually forgot to post about this last week lel. Quite interesting chamber folk stuff, yet I'm still not into her vocals that much. Has a bit of a medieval flavour at times that I quite like.
Mirror's Edge: Actually first time listening to this (outside the game I mean), and I'm surprised by its quality. Very good electronic stuff - fits the game perfect, sounds great on its own.
Twin Peaks: And more soundtracks! Had forgotten how great this one was, even if some sounds a bit cheesy and outdated, can't help but feel immersed into the world of the series again. Really digging those jazzy tracks. Hoping the new season delivers.
Pimp Master: Despite the name, it's not hip-hop :lol. Actually some crazy japanese jazz, very energetic, but never meandering and quite fun. Really good.

this is good, but not as good as paleopneumatic i think. the first few tracks are nothing special but it picks up at around track 5 & until near the end stays pretty interesting and diverse. ending is weak too though, but so was paleopneumatic's so ehh.

may look into it at some point, dunno if i'm quite feeling it enough rn for the order i'm working on
