Ranking the instrumentals
« on: March 28, 2016, 05:25:26 PM »
With 2 more added on TA, thought this would be an interesting topic.

Overture 1928
Yates Jam
Erotomania
Dystopian Overture
The Dance of Eternity
Enigma Machine
Entre Acte 2285
False Awakening Suite
Stream of Consciousness
Hell's Kitchen
Eve
Raw Dog

Six Degrees overture does not count, it's part of a song with vocals.

I wouldn't count "Erotomania" either, since it's part I of a suite. Still, interesting thread.

My favourite has always been "Stream Of Consciousness", which is also my favourite track on Train Of Thought. To me, "SOC" is special - for one, it's the only 'long', 10+ minute instrumental by the band. Still, it doesn't feel boring at any point. There are many cool, interesting sections in it (such as the salsa-ish bit in the middle, and the proggy organ-like keyboard melodies towards the end). That said, to me a listen is not complete without "Vacant" first.

The rest? "Dance" and "Kitchen" are amazing in different ways.

I also like "1928", "2285", and "Dystopian" a lot, but they are really collages of melodies / progressions from other songs.

I see where you are coming from, but I think Erotomania should be counted because it is still a song by itself. SDOIT is just one song, while Erotomania, Voices, and The Silent Man are three separate songs.

My list.

1. Hell's Kitchen
2. Stream of Consciousness
3. Erotomania
4. Enigma Machine
6. Ytse Jam
7. The Dance of Eternity
8. Dystopian Overture
9. Raw Dog
10. Overture 1928
11. Overture 1928

Dystopian Overture
Overture 1928
Erotomania
Stream of Consciousness
Hell's Kitchen
2285 Entra'acte
Enigma Machine
Ytsejam
False Awakening Suite

The one instrumental that never moved me: The Dance of Eternitg. It's just like a showoff version of the Metropolis Part 1 instrumental, except that Metropolis has soul. TDOE is just all chops, no soul whatsoever.

SDOIT Overture
Overture 1928
Hell's Kitchen

The Dance Of Eternity
Stream Of Consciousness
Erotomania
False Awakening Suite
Dystopian Overture
Ytse Jam

Raw Dog / Enigma Machine
Eve
2285 Entra'acte

Middle tier was really hard to order because they're all consistently great in quality.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

This changes depending on my mood, except for The Dance Of Eternity which always remains at the top.
I do count the 6DOIT Overture, because, although 6DOIT is ONE song of 42 minutes, on later pressings the song was divided into 8 seperate tracks anyway so it counts as a seperate track anyway .

The Dance Of Eternity
Eve
Dystopian Overture
Stream Of Consciousness
Erotomania
6DOIT Overture
Overture 1928
2285 Entr'acte
False Awakening Suite
Hell's Kitchen
Enigma Machine
Ytse Jam
Raw Dog

Top Tier, in some vague order:
Hell's Kitchen - Tightly composed, great climax. Drums are fantastic
Overture 1928 - SFaM has great melodies, so makes a great overture
Dance of Eternity - Just damn cool
Dystopian Overture - Similar to SFaM, Astonishing has fantastic melodies
Erotomania - Has a great long and winding feel to it, great guitar solo

Still Great:
SDOIT Overture - Would be higher but for the MIDI instruments. Trumpets for War Inside My head, ugghhh. SCORE version is cool but sounds a little unrehearsed
Stream of Consciousness - Great stuff but a bit long
2285 Entr'acte - Similar to Dystopian but shorter, still excellent

Good
Eve - Love the ending, rest is just nice. Sounds like Twin Peaks soundtrack
False Awakening Suite - Really cool, boss battle style, very brief though
Ytse Jam - Pretty cool, poorly produced of course

Bad
Enigma Machine - Uninspired, DT by the numbers
Raw Dog - Can't even remember how it sounds, all just a mush

BONUS:
Odyssey - Top quality cover! Cover album in general is fantastic
