This should be pretty straightforward. I feel like Mike Portnoy has been a huge influence in Dream Theater and his legacy will never be forgotten.

I know The Mirror/Lie isn't a part of the twelve step suite, but I'm including that song because it still deals with alcoholism.

My favorite would have to be Repentance.

1. Repentance
2. This Dying Soul
3. The Shattered Fortress
4. The Glass Prison
5. The Mirror/Lie
6. The Root of all Evil

It's a ballad, off of my favorite album. My favorite Petrucci solo in this suite would have to be Repentance. It brings a really calming atmosphere.

What about you guys?

I drown in hesitation, my words come crashing down. And all my best creations, burning to the ground. The thought of starting over, leaves me paralyzed. Tear it out again, another one that got away.

The Glass Prison wins easily, for me.
So fking tired of being an oversensitive naive moronic fkin bitch. I CANT STOP IT. I CANT CHANGE. IM STUCK. This world eats me alive. My purpose is simply to be what others shouldn't be. A shriveled fking beacon of sad energy. I have lost. I am lost.

The Mirror is the best, but Lie shouldn't be a part of this, since the lyrics were written by Kevin Moore and thus have no relation to one another from a lyrical storytelling perspective.

Wasn't Lie originally part of The Mirror, only some parts got cut off and recycled?

Not sure about that, but the lyrics have nothing to do with those in The Mirror.  They connect musically, not lyrically.

The Shattered Fortress.

Although I think that they're all good songs (especially The Mirror and The Glass Prison), I'll probably go with The Root Of All Evil. I love the way the intro builds up and (ready to) explodes into the main riff. The chorus sounds epic and so do James. It's just such a great concise song!  :metal

Easily The Glass Prison, with TROAE not far behind that. :metal
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

It was. LaBrie felt that it was strong enough to be its own song

Personally my favorite is TROAE

Yes and to an extent it still is. The end of The Mirror is at the end of Lie due to the reprise being what was on the demo version, So they are still very much connected. Also, the lyrics of Lie could be interpreted as a response to The Mirror, wth TM giving a promise and Lie doubting that he can carry it out.

That is what my choice is.

The question makes no sense.

But in terms of favorite song, that would go to The Glass Prison.

Don't agree with the comments, but this ranking is fairly close to mine. Here's mine:
TGP
The Mirror (very close second)
TRoAE
TDS/TSF (tie)
Repentance
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

People claim that TSF is not the epic closer they wanted it to be. What do you like about TSF? I too agree it is an extremely strong song.

I didn't like it as much until I saw it live. I think it's such a powerful song and I love how it includes sections from some of the past songs in the AA suite. I didn't expect it to be an "epic" closer as the whole suite is one big epic.

But they're all excellent songs..

And btw, they're not "suites", but songs (also: parts) from The 12 Step Suite..

Shouldn't the title be "Which is your favorite song in the AA suite"?

Because the actual title suggests it should be every song Portnoy written, and it's missing ACOS, Never Enough...

The Mirror, hands down.
TROAE would come in second, and then there's a huge gap before any of the others would show up in my rankings. I really find the 12SS boring to be honest.

Yeah, TGP and TDS are really boring songs.. ;)

For me, they both have a good start and then they overextended to the point where they are  just churning out riffs after riffs without much variation. Then it got boring.

2.The Root Of All Evil

3.The Shattered Fortress

4.The Glass Prison

5.This Dying Soul

6.Repentance

TDS really is a boring song, as are Repentance and TSF.
TGP actually has some cool stuff in it, and if they cut all of MP's vocals and shortened it a bit it would actually be very good. As of now I skip it.

The Glass Prison no question. The Root of All Evil would be second and all the rest really don't do anything for me whatsoever.
