Regression/O1928/SDV, The Glass Prison, and ITPOE Part 1

I like the way you think, Sir!

The left and right coast have it.  ;)

You mean the BEST and the other coast have it?

jk
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

:lol  Well, I can't argue that you have the better weather of the two. Though, I think the earthquakes would severely fuck with my vertigo.

As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

That's what my girlfriend says about my 2 penises.

(Not really - I don't have a girlfriend...)

The problem I see here is that he has two penises but only one girlfriend. He needs to capitalize on his deformity.

ITPOE is the best. IMO, the definitive DT album opener

I picked 6:00, New Millennium and ItPoE-1, because with all THREE of those songs you know EXACTLY what you're getting, right from the first NOTE! These songs all come out of the box hard and heavy, instead of starting out slow, or trying to sound "pretty." Not that there's anything WRONG with the ballads or pretty melodies, but I like a song that isn't SUPPOSED to be subtle not trying to SOUND subtle. I think all three of those albums, along with Train of Thought, might be good for turning a "hardcore metal-head" onto DT, if it's someone who has no familiarity with their music.
I can't stop the world from turning around, or the pull of the moon on the tide, but I don't believe that we're in this alone, I believe we're along for the ride...

It's one of my least favorite DT albums, but I always liked how Systematic Chaos went straight to it with ITPOE.

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I guess you could take this thread a couple ways, so I'll do this:

Top 3 songs that are also openers:
1. The Glass Prison
2. Regression / Overture / Strange Dejavu
3. ITPOE Pt. 1

Top 3 songs in the sense of how well they open up the album:

1. Regression / Overture / Strange DeJavu
2. FAS / The Enemy Inside
3. Descent / Dystopian Overture / Gift of Music

Hard decision, when you think it out, but i'll go with the opener to Awake, my favorite DT album.

Easily The Glass Prison, my #1 favourite DT song (well, maybe #2, a close 2nd to Learning to Live).
