Favorite Dream Theater album opener/s
« on: March 26, 2016, 10:38:06 PM »
Dream Theater has always been good in opening their albums. What are your favorites?

For this poll, I opted to bunch songs for the albums that opened with instrumentals. I just always get the sense that the album has not yet properly opened without the first song with vocals.

For my own vote, my favorites are:

1. Descent of the NOMACS / Dystopian Overture / The Gift of Music
2. Regression / Overture 1928 / Strange Deja Vu
3. The Root of All Evil

I went with SFAM/SDOIT/ToT, with TROAE very close. What a great run of album openers!
Heck, there's really not a bad option among these, except maybe OTBOA which is a weak way to kick off the album imo.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I agree. I think they should have opened with Bridges in the Sky, which is what they did in the tour.

Agreed! Just a little while ago I forgot that BITS actually wasn't the opener, because it worked so well on the tour with the chant intro and then BAM metal riff. :metal

Very good poll. I'm still undecided among 6:00, TGP, AIA and the combos of SFAM and TA.

I find it funny that the three-song combos from the two concept albums are still much shorter than TGP and ANTR. ANTR is such a long opener.  :lol

It actually goes by pretty quickly. I just wish I liked it more.

SDoIT, SC and TA. DotN/DO/TGoM being the favourite out of those, just such a grandiose and engaging way to begin the album.

The Glass Prison is probably my favorite song here, but I think The Root of All Evil works better as an album opener. Went with ItPoE1 for the third option.

Dystopian Overture is glorious. DO/TGOM is the opener in my 1-disc DT mix CD. Such a beautiful piece of music.

Went with (in no particular order):

ITPOE
Regression/Overture1928/SDV
The Glass Prison

and if I could choose 2 more I'd add ANTR and 6:00
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

1. Scenes
2. SC
3. DT12

TGP, AIA, and TROAE all start out  :metal, but they are all too long and bloated, and to me, are ultimately boring.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

The Glass Prison is easily my favourite, but my other votes went for 6:00 and New Millenium. Funny that with my top-tier DT albums other than SDOIT (I&W, ADTOE), I'm not that keen on the opener.

6:00 by far.

It has nothing to do with the song being better/worse than the others listed, but for an opening track this one serves the purpose perfectly.

Yeah. 6:00 is waking up with that early 1990s angst, which sets up the mood of Awake perfectly.  :tup

Regression/O1928/SDV, The Glass Prison, and ITPOE Part 1

And since TGP is such a killer song from a brilliant album, I'm going to listen to 6DOIT. It has been a while since I heard it.
