Most badass DT song/moment
« on: March 20, 2016, 12:00:03 AM »
I was listening to a few metal focused DT song and I couldn't feel like they just kick some serious ass, they make me feel powerful, and with headache because of the headbanging.

But not only the riff, the lyrics, they really feel like some serious mofo is doing shit with everything.
The song I'd rank as being the most badass is probably Lost not Forgotten, man, so much kickassery, the whole intro, the verse riff and the ending, fuck.
This is on pair with The Path that Divides, am I the only one that thinks Daryus kicks so much ass and DT has actually created a very badass character? Wish they had explored him a lil' more.

(Just for fun)

Lost Not Forgotten is a song that seems to get ignored or not that well-liked around here, but not by me. Good choice.

But when it comes to "bad-ass metal" one of the first DT songs that comes to MY mind is Lie. I could easily see this song being recorded by a band like Metallica or Megadeth, among others.
I can't stop the world from turning around, or the pull of the moon on the tide, but I don't believe that we're in this alone, I believe we're along for the ride...

The Dark Eternal Night. Pretty badass from start to finish, especially that outro riff/solo. :metal
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

The Glass Prison, dude.

Also, A Tempting Offer is quite a badass song for Daryus.

I think The Glass prison is a really good choice.

Other possibilities: Beyond this life, In the presence of enemies, The Path that divides, Caught in a web, This dying soul.

Yeah. "The Glass Prison" or "The Dark Eternal Night". I'm also a fan of "A Nightmare To Remember" and "The Enemy Inside".

Yes, intro to Nightmare to Remember is pretty badass.

The Mirror. That's like, we play with just one bad ass riff and make a full bad ass song out of it with one of the most bad ass vocals and lyrics you would hear in a DT song.

The first guitar solo in Ministry of Lost Souls immediately comes to mind for me.

I think In the Name of God's duet solo by Rudess and Petrucci was one of the most badass moments.
I drown in hesitation, my words come crashing down. And all my best creations, burning to the ground. The thought of starting over, leaves me paralyzed. Tear it out again, another one that got away.

Lines in the Sand intro, and the whole song!

I LOVE Derek's synths in that song!

(Also mostly everything that has been mentioned by other people already..)

I get a lot of "boos from the audience" whenever I mention this one, but I'm going to include it anyway: Just Let Me Breathe!

It definitely is one badass groovy song :tup
Another example, not so heavy as some others but equally badass: 6:00, JP's wah solo and James' powerful vocals after that (love Luna Park version with scream).

I think Systematic Chaos is pretty much equal with Train of thought. But I'm surprised no one has mentioned As I Am yet..."swimming against the current/I wish I weren't so ----ed/feels like I'm stuck..."

I'm not really sure what's meant by "badass," but given the way that I take the meaning of the word and what others have said in this thread I'd have to say that the following obviously qualify:

- intro to This Dying Soul

- The "don't cross the crooked step" part of Honor thy Father

- The Glass Prison (multiple sections -- I'm sure you all know which ones I'm referring to)

- The outro of Dark Eternal Night (along with some other parts)

- 11:05-11:21 of Nightmare to Remember

And I'd have to say that the following fail horribly at being badass purely in virtue of the fact that they try to be badass but end up just not working:

-  11:21-11:57 of Nightmare to Remember. Yes, that section. You know the one.

Of course this all depends on how you interpret "badass." I kinda think the alto sax solo in Another Day is badass in a kind of way, so don't take what I say too seriously.

The lyrics are horrid, but I'll be damned if the JP/DS split unison isn't freaking amazing. Good call!

An aside: I vaguely recall an article from way back in the 90's where someone commented on how tedious it was to achieve the split effect in the unison. Of course these days with the software that's available the effect is trivial to achieve...

I might be the one of the few people who would say this, but a badass moment is Portnoy's ROAR on ANTR.

Portnoy sounds so badass at that part.

I thought it was wack at first, but the chant part to 'In the presence of enemies Part 2.'

"HEY.....HEY.....HEY.....!"
Then the double bass when James says, 'Lord you are my god and my shepherd, nothing more shall i want.'
Still get chills at that part.

Earlier on, when i first heard 'The Mirror' go seamlessly into 'Lie,' while listening on a walkman back then!

Now, it's the 'is it or isn't it a rap' rap in 'The path that divides.'  I was saying the other day that it is maybe the most badass thing i've heard in the last 5 years or so. Still can't listen to that without replaying it over and over.

Portnoy sounds so badass at that part.

i'm totally conflicted about this section of ANTR, because it's a genuine attempt by Portnoy (and I assume the rest of the band) to sound badass. And I can totally dig what they were trying to do. But it just doesn't work for me. Maybe it's the lyrical content, or maybe it's the way it's delivered. But my eyes involuntarily roll up into the back of my head (indicating lameness) while the rational part of my brain simultaneously respects what they were trying to do.  It's one of the weirdest parts of DT's catalog for me, in any case.
