The thread you linked has everyone rank the songs in the comments, but jut to be clear: this one will happen entirely through polls, meaning we don't actually score them in the comments but just wait for the polls and then vote what score we think the song deserves, right?

Correct. The idea is to utilize polls. Ariich did an great job with his format, which is pretty much troll-proof. But I'm hoping that by having open polls, members can vote whenever they want with the option of changing their rating as time passes.

The problem with polls of course is that they'll overtake the P&S forum. My hope would be that folks would just use those polls for data, and reply in this thread, causing the rating polls to sink to the bottom.

I can't tell if there's any interest for this or not, but if there is, I'll get cracking.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I forget we even have a polls section so I haven't looked there in years, but as long as this thread is kept updated with links, I think it's a good idea to not have all of those polls in DT side.
Also, I'd suggest that the results are hidden until after you vote, just to keep it a bit more unbiased.

Some nice grooves and stuff, but this kind of Dream Theater really doesn't appeal to me all that much. I guess the dated production also plays a part in it, and I'm going to base my scores on the studio versions so I'm ignoring the Score version.

So I guess it's better if we leave out what score we gave the song in the discussion aswell to prevent biased votes.

It's fine if you include your score. Plus, with the ability to change votes, people can always change them later if the want to make a choice based on bias (for whatever reason).

I'm sure any dud voting will be relatively minimal, and probably go both ways and roughly cancel out. Don't let the few bad eggs stop us from having fun.

And hey, maybe someone actually does think Status Seeker is a 10/10 song.

Mostly around 5s or 6s for the songs so far. Except Another Won, which I gave a 2.5.

All in the range of 4-7.5 for me so far (I was generous with Ytse Jam since it has no vocals), with Status Seeker receiving a 1 only for the tolerable chorus.
AFIL, Ytse Jam, TKH are among the better tracks of WDADU, so I gave them reasonable scores. The only other song on the album that will get as high a score will be Afterlife, which is probably my favourite.

If I ever rate things, I usually rate even more precisely, using all decimals, not just .5.

I think 0.5 increments is perfect. If you don't want to vote that precisely, just use a rounded number. If you want more precise, I think that's plenty reasonable precision.

If you want to vote more precisely than that though, you're just cray cray.

I'm just curious about the thought process behind it. I thought that even the out of 5 number rating covers a lot of bases (brilliant for 5, very good for 4, alright for 3, underwhelming for 2, bad for 1 and abysmal for 0) and 10 scale allows for enough nuance. But with .5 I struggle to see the difference in feeling from 6 to 6.5 or 3.5 to 4. I often see this kind of scale on Metal Archives (magified x5 due to like 80 more choices) and when people define their scale they are like "90% - 95% is fantastic" then "85% - 90% is superb" and the feeling seems too close and things begin to blur together to the point where it may be better to just think of it in a simpler way. Not saying it's an incorrect thing to do, just that I don't quite understand it.

Everyone rates differently, as it's an entirely subjective scale anyway. Having a higher precision scale allows for you to vote any way you want up to that level of precision. If you want to vote on a 1-5 scale, then you can vote for 2/4/6/8/10. If you want to nitpick in increments of 0.5, you can do that too. If it were a 1-5 scale, people who want to vote on a finer scale would probably complain.

I understand what you're saying. My motivation in having 21 options because I wanted to cut down the chances of two songs having the exact same rating average. We'll see how it goes.

Fair enough. To be honest, I prefer not rating at all as my opinions are constantly in flux (though admittedly on a small scale) which is probably why I'd rather have less choice like a 5 number scale than having the choice to go precise as it makes me keep changing my mind.

Not sure how to vote for these first batch of songs though - if I was just judging the WDADU tracks based on the album verisons, they'd all get a lower score than if I judged based on LaBrie live versions.

Personally, I rate with the studio versions in my mind. I can't police people..if they want to rate based on a live version, then that's their choice.

I voted based on studio, although it would only make a difference of 1 point at most in the case of WDADU, and wouldn't affect my rating of anything since.

Light Fuse is actually my third favorite, right behind TOWHTSTS and Killing Hand, I gave Light Fuse a 7.5 and the other two an 8, but I'll probably lower them to make them more realistic compared to other albums, this is my least favorite DT album after all, and I want the differences between my absolute favorite songs and my favorites from WDADU to be bigger than 2 points.

I rated basically everything on WDADU a 7, which indicates to me a good, memorable song, except for:

- Ytse Jam (8)
- Status Seeker (6)

This latest batch mostly deserved zeros. OAMOT got a 1 because I can actually remember some of it, but it's not good. Afterlife gets a 7.5 though. Even on the album, that's a good listenable track. Judging by studio tracks with vocals, that's easily the pick of WDADU for me.
