I don't get how it's silly. It's stupid that Dems tried to stop Bush in 92 and it's stupid that the GOP is doing the same thing now. We elect presidents for 4 years and expect them to do their jobs for 4 year terms. Not 75% of their term. The idea of not having a president do his job because it's "an election year" is lunacy.

Actually, I think every comment here (save yours) have been about how the political gamesmanship is all bullshit regardless of party.

And here we are, 23:04, 2/24/16, and one party is right and one party is wrong. The fact that they were juxtaposed in 1992 doesn't change that.

And I have no false beliefs that things will get better. I'm pretty certain they won't barring a massive catastrophe. Partisan division has been snowballing for going on 20 years and it's only going to continue picking up speed and mass.

This election is already shaping up to be the worst in memory.

Really though, I do have to laugh that the GOP Senate is so scared of its own shadow at this point that a Republican being vetted has it running around in loops screaming foul! They were so prepared for an extreme liberal, that Sandoval being in the picture has them in a tizzy. Kinda funny in a sad way. This whole thing is ridiculous.

But isn't Sandoval basically the definition of a RINO and a closet extreme liberal for many on the right anyway? I can't imagine them considering somebody who raised taxes while governor and supports abortion as a "true conservative".

I don't think it's that cut and dry. But that doesn't matter. As that chick said, the GOP doesn't care who the person is. From their perspective it's about the nominator.

The Dems didn't try to stop Bush in 92.  There was no Supreme Court opening in 92.

The statements from Biden from that time currently floating around were basically his opinions, what he would urge the President to do (refrain from making an appointment in an election year) in the event that there came an opening that year.  It was not a policy decision along the lines of Mitch McConnell's announcements, and there was never any indication from him that, if such a thing did occur, that he would refuse to hold hearings for such a hypothetical nominee.

Sandoval wants his name withdrawn from consideration. Like I said yesterday, we're now in a climate where people sane enough to be qualified won't actually want to bother with it because of the associated bullshit.

Which makes it infinitely worse.

He wasn't planning.  This is Joe Biden.  You're giving him too much credit.

And besides, there was nothing to plan.  He said "If an opening in the Supreme Court comes up this year, since it is an election year, I would urge President Bush not to make a nomination before the election."  He didn't say "President Bush shouldn't waste his time making a nomination because we will not review any appointment he makes."

Look, I don't want to take sides, because I've already been clear that it's not up to Obama or McConnell or Biden or Maher or Flintstone who does what (it's up to the Constitution) but honestly, and respectfully, I think you guys are shaving that hair to the utmost with the parsing of Biden and McConnell.

End of the day, both sides have tried and both sides are beholden to the same document in terms of what WILL happen.

BTW, how did you feel about presidential candidate Obama going to Iraq and letting them know they shouldn't complete a deal with Bush, but instead leave it to the next President.  Otherwise, the next President may not honor that deal.
As I recall I thought it was a dick move. I felt similarly when the GOP tried to sabotage treaty negotiations. However, unless we're going back to "he did it first!!!," I'm not sure how it matters.

Congratulations. I'm not sure who you were paraphrasing about loving Obama trolling, but I personally haven't seen it, at least not in reference to Sandoval. I wasn't around for the first few pages so I might've missed it.

Please stop trying to make this personal. I know neither el barto or I would describe ourselves as pro Obama and we're the 2 actively hoping to do away with the political games over the past page or so.

It's all hearsay obviously, but I think he's got presidential aspirations in the future. Popular moderate Latin governor with his background? Sounds like a reasonable thought.

Yes.  Much worse. Premeditation.
Premeditation of a suggestion/opinion is worse than an actual policy?

From Fox News analyst Juan Williams:

Quote
As an act of political theater, President Obama should pick Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to replace Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. Then the nation will find out if McConnell’s distaste for the president is so great that he is willing to obstruct his own nomination to punish Obama.
