I liked the last two albums, but for now I've gotta go with The Astonishing.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I'm between ADTOE and TA. Still can't decide, ADTOE is the Dream Theater i've been used to love, and TA is something so different and experimental that i need to see where it ranks among the band's catalog.

The Astonishing blows all the other away. The only one that's close is BC&SL. I hope it still holds up a year from now (and ten).

ADTOE or SC I guess.

TA would've been the best for me if not for the second act. I like Moment of Betrayal and Heaven's Cove and then it's a total disaster until Our New World comes in.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I'm on the same boat as you. Loved ADTOE but TA is getting better and better but it is still as you said, different and experimental.

I managed to make a 20-or-so track version of TA and flows better to my ears.

One week ago I would have said DT12 by far. But The Astonishing is really good. However it's too early to really tell how well it will hold, so I'll vote DT12 for now.

These bunch of albums are my least favorite. With that said I still like them and The Astonishing is definitely the best out of them all. Black Clouds is the worst.

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Out of the RR era I'd have to say TA followed by ADTOE. Both have good production and all the instruments breathe. TA has the far superior drum sound of the two, and being a huge fan of drums in general, I believe the drums need a good pocket in the mix. I think TA has that. I appreciate both albums because both were a swing in a different direction. ADTOE replaced the balls to the wall, "raaaawr!" metal feel of BC&SL with a lighter touch that was really good to hear. With TA, it's another departure in that it's the most cinematic music they've ever done. All the tracks breathe, but they have a killer drum sound that gives it a power that ADTOE is missing. Not to mention how emotional the music and playing is. I think that's been, not missing really, but at a minimum on the last few RR releases.
Everything is immaterial. Do you know that reality is immaterial? This is not reality.
In what friggin' universe is a 68 minute long album "short"?

The Astonishing, without a question.

I guess i would rank them:

1. The Astonishing
2. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
3. Dream Theater
4. A Dramatic Turn of Events
5. Systematic Chaos

4 and 5 could switch around.

My ranking:

1. Systematic Chaos
2. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
3. A Dramatic Turn Of Events
4. Dream Theater

*The Astonishing - not familiar enough with it to rank it yet.  A new album needs a breaking in period before being ranked against albums a person has loved for years.

This but I voted TA cause I'm so in love with it right now and it clouded my judgement heh

I still can't take any polls about ranking TA seriously yet.
Voting among the rest, it's kind of splitting hairs (aside from DT12).
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Yep, it's still too early to accurately edge TA, but in time, I can see it topping the first two Mangini albums, for me anyway.

Amazingly, I am starting to like DT12 as much as ADTOE.  ADTOE's best two or three songs are better than anything from DT12, but DT12 is so freaking consistent (every song is an 8 or 9 out of 10). Nothing on ADTOE is bad, but I am still pretty bored with On the Backs of Angels, and while I like both Outcry and Lost Not Forgotten, neither get much play with me anymore.

I was telling a friend, who is also a big DT fan, about this last week, how if I had to bust Dream Theater down to one mp3 CD (700 MB, nearly 6 1/2 hours worth of music) for the car, ADTOE would get 4-5 songs, but if I had to do two, it'd still probably only get 5 songs (This Is the Life, Bridges in the Sky, Far from Heaven, Breaking All Illusions and Beneath the Surface).

I like both SC and BC&SL, but I think they are probably the two least best DT records (I used to put 8V lower than BC&SL, but not anymore).  SC is a fun record on the right day, but lacks anything really awesome, and BC&SL probably has the least identity of any DT record to date.

I voted Systematic Chaos, but yeah, The Astonishing is easily looking like it's gonna bump it down for me. I can't get enough of the new album. But as of right now, Systematic Chaos still holds a nearer and dearer place in my heart.

TA would've been the best for me if not for the second act.
Pretty much the same, I would put it at a close second if it was just the first act though. But the 2nd act brings the whole thing down. I love Moment of Betrayal and The Walking Shadow, I like every song inbetween plus My Last Farewell. But every song after that bores me to tears.

BC&SL, because it's got The Count of Tuscany. I recently rediscovered it, and I cannot find anything wrong with it. I even like the verses with the ridiculous lyrics. The atmospheric JP section with the subsequent ending is pure Dream Theater gold.

The Astonishing. Before people tell me it's too soon, know that this is already the RoadRunner era album I am most intimately familiar with, rather than sticking to my favourite tracks as I do with the others.

The Astonishing is the best (at least based on early first impressions, but its future looks pretty bright).

My Roadrunner Ranking currently would be:

1) The Astonishing
2) Dream Theater (2 & 3 sometimes alternate!)
3) A Dramatic Turn Of Events (2 & 3 sometimes alternate!)
4) Black Clouds & Silver Linings
5) Systematic Chaos
