Parts of 'The Astonishing' that remind you of......
« on: February 01, 2016, 02:58:09 PM »
Starting a separate thread because I see various comments strewn about.

What do you hear on TA that reminds you of some other song?  It can be the music or the 'feel'.

A Life Left Behind beginning-Tempus Fugit, Yes
2285 Entr'acte-Illumination Theory, DT (mentioned by a few)
Lord Nefaryus-King Herod's Song, JCSuperstar (with a bit of Pilate singing)

...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

The Bow down to Nafaryus riff from "Three Days" (and "2285 Entr'acte") is very similar to part of DT's own "Raw Dog."

There's a melody in Chosen that reminds me a bit of The Bigger Picture's chorus. The Answer and Begin Again remind me of Disney but I don't know any specific songs to reference there, they just give off that sort of vibe to me.

With regards to "feel".....

The riff that opens Our New World gave me that same sort of "fuck yeah!!!" feel I got on first hearing About To Crash (Reprise) opening lick, or the melody to Surrounded. Very upbeat and uplifting. :metal
Everything is immaterial. Do you know that reality is immaterial? This is not reality.
In what friggin' universe is a 68 minute long album "short"?

The ending of Begin Again totally reminds me of Do They Know It's Christmas?.

And Lord Nefaryus has a wicked Queen vibe.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

The way that the 1st line in "Begin Again" is sung reminds me of a song by Def Leppard called "Kings of the World"

Compare:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iox7gBKhMag

(Start at the 40 second mark and compare)

Also "Kings of the World" reminded me of Queen when I 1st heard it.  How deep will this go!?

The ending of Begin Again totally reminds me of Do They Know It's Christmas?.

And Lord Nefaryus has a wicked Queen vibe.

Also this.  I played that part for my wife and began badly singing "feed the world"

I think that it was already mentionned at some point by a few people, but Nafaryus theme reminds me of the Inspector Gadget theme

The vocal melody at the end of Hymn Of A Thousand Voices is sorta like the one in Kaipa's Distant Voices.

...and although they sound nothing alike stylisticly for some reason Heavens Cove always make me think of Queen's "The Prophet's Song"...which if you haven't heard has the coolest vocal solo section in the middle.

I believe DT themselves referred to the opening bit as the Inspector Gadget riff. I do love a good Inspector Gadget riff. :metal

I was about to say this. The intro was by far my favorite part of OTBOA, so I'm glad they brought that style back.

"Heaven's Cove" sounds like "Is There Anybody Out There?" (Pink Floyd)
Also, one of the melodic motifs sounds like "Point of No Return" (Phantom of the Opera).

"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Lord Nefaryus-King Herod's Song, JCSuperstar (with a bit of Pilate singing)

YES! King Herod's Song as sung by Pilate, that's exactly what went through my mind this morning when I played the song.

Also, the beginning of A Tempting Offer reminds me a lot of the beginning of Behind the Veil.
"They want to qualify their boys for jobs in the modern world. You can hardly blame them, can you?"
"Oh yes," said Scott-King. "I can and do." [...]
"If you approve, headmaster, I will stay as I am here as long as any boy wants to read the classics. I think it would be very wicked indeed to do anything to fit a boy for the modern world."

This melody turns into the first verse of Lost Not Forgotten for me.

And yes, definetely this.

What the hell. This far into the thread and nobody has mentioned yet that
Brother Can You Hear Me = Waiting For The Worms (Pink Floyd)
A Life Left Behind = Tempus Fugit (Yes)

I mean, The Wall and Drama are obviously a huge influence for them for this type of thing.

The Path that Devides have that Symphony X riff somewhere at 2:30 mark iirc.

Heaven's Cove sounds heavily like Headspace when vocals start.

Some passages which remind me a bit of other songs:

A New Beginning intro = Ayreon

NOMAC tracks = interlude between Panic Attack and Never Enough on Octavarium

Ending instrumental of Begin Again = "Embrace the days" section of BAI, but faster.

Exactly what I thought, is it fan conspiracy time?? Octavarium is a sequel to The Astonishing, where the NOMACS power up again years later and destroy The Great Northern Empire. Then we meet The Dark Master....

Nobody has mentioned the Billy Jean beat in A New Beginning? I mean, it's a standard 4/4 drum beat, but the moment it kicks in I'm always reminded of Billy Jean.

There's a riff in Heaven's Cove reminds me of the James Bond theme.

The Answer reminds me of Beneath the Surface (too much)

I'm also getting the themes from the old Incredible Hulk and Buck Rogers TV shows...

Heaven's Cove - Is There Anybody Out There? (Pink Floyd)
Lord Nafaryus - general early Queen vibe
Begin Again - You Raise Me Up
