To create the Fire Triangle, you need Fuel, Heat, and Oxygen. So static electricity is is definitely a real possibility. Due to the number of components that are running on your vehicle, it is very possible to have the right mix of the Fire Triangle to occur. It only takes one tiny spark. So, I always shut off the car. I also don't use my cell phone, because even though the FCC in the report says the chances are remote, there still is chance. Not to mention, I don't want to be distracted while I'm pumping gas.

I also ground myself when I get out of the car, by touching my cars metal surface before I reach for the gas nozzle. I have actually caused a spark, and shock doing that on very cold, dry days.

Couldn't the machine (the newest ones have speakers and TV screens on them) that's pumping your gas and all the lights around you do the same thing?

I'm not an engineer, and I haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn Express in a long time, so I have no idea. I would imagine since it's part of the pump, it would already be grounded somehow internally. Dunno. Great question though.

I recall when I was growing up, about four blocks from our neighborhood, a family called the local utility/gas company one morning because they smelled gas. When the gas company employee arrived he and the husband went into the basement, and about 10 seconds later, the house exploded. Literally blew the whole thing to smithereens, killing the employee and the family of four who lived there. It was determined a spark from his flashlight set off the gas leak in the house.

I turn the car off and I also don't mess with my phone while pumping.

I've tried to ignite a pool of gas with a cigarette like in the movies. It didn't work :(

Hahaha, I have this mental picture of Chino, looking all Clint Eastwood, flicking his butt into the pool of gas...  and nothing.  <WHAAAA-waaaaaa>.

The gas station always has big signs telling you to shut off your engine. I didn't even realize this was a thing people were reckless enough to do.

That's why I always laugh at signs telling people to not do stupid things.

I never shut my engine off when pumping. Ever.

I don't usually shut mine off unless they ask me to, which has happened before.

Yeah, cracks me up too because most people need to be told these things.  It's kinda like leaving a toaster plugged in.  Most of the time, nothing will happen but it just isn't a good idea.

Theft of your car while inside paying or getting coffee, etc.

I am always amused by people who are too dumb/lazy to turn their cars off when they go inside a gas station.  Those are the people I will laugh at when their cars get stolen.  Uh, you left your car unattended with the keys in the ignition, moron! :lol :lol

Throwing a lit cigarette into a pool of gasoline will probably not light it because the temperature of the cigarette is not hot enough. Throwing a lit match into the same pool would probably light the gasoline (or the vapors actually).

I always do the best I can to unplug anything that heats up (heater, toaster oven, battery chargers, etc.) before leaving the house.  With a dog at home with nowhere else to go for the day, I cannot take any chances.

Serious question, why is leaving a toaster plugged in a bad idea, but leaving the microwave, stove, refrigerator, televisions, clocks, fish tanks, washing machine, dryer, guitar amplifiers, computers, video game consoles, cellphone chargers, and lamps plugged in not a bad idea?

Because it makes you look like a redneck and is an eyesore for your guests. Unplug the fucking toaster and put it away in the storage cabinet just below the counter. It doesn't take anytime at all and you'll thank me later.

No. I'm not taking this thing in and out every time I want to toast something. The chord is hidden behind it anyway.

It's a convection toaster. You can't even fit a 12lb bird in it.

This is an oven.

I don't think the size is what makes or doesn't make something an oven.

Then I'm confused as fuck right now. We've had those all my life and they have always been referred to as a toaster. There are popup toasters, and then there are rack toasters. There's a toast setting on it. What am I missing?

That's a toaster oven. It's an oven sized for toast and other such things. But I wouldn't call it a toaster.

If it has a fan and exhaust system, then it's a convection oven.

What you are calling a popup toaster is a toaster.

Nothing else is a toaster.

But there's a toast setting!! I feel like the universe is unraveling around me.

Serious question, why is it specifically called a "pupup toaster" if there are no other kinds of toasters? Why was it given a specific title like that if not to differentiate it from other toasters?

Is this a toaster?

Probably to differentiate it from ancient toasters that didn't automatically pop up. It has nothing to do with toaster ovens. I don't know anyone who calls it a popup toaster. They call it a toaster.

Because toaster technology - it's basically a metal carcass with about 40 exposed wires - is from circa 1675 and has not developed one iota since that time.

What you are calling a popup toaster is a toaster.

Nothing else is a toaster.

This is absolutely correct.  As the immortal Connor MacLeod said in "Highlander", "there can be only ONE!"

And is basically a controlled short-circuit designed for the sole purpose of burning shit.

Is the thing with a conveyor on it a toaster?

We had one of those at Pizza Hut to warm up breadsticks.  If it's primary purpose is turning bread into crispy bread, then I might consider calling it a toaster, but I'd really only ever routinely refer to the popup variety as a toaster.  The pic you posted is of a convection oven, which has plenty of purposes other than making toast.  It has a toast setting, but it isn't a toaster.

Also, until now, I have never heard the term "popup toaster".

I think Chino has been living under a rock this whole time. The kind of rock that plays it fast and loose on defining kitchen appliances, lacks quality viewing material, and has inadequate balcony railings.
