Gas Station Question

I can't stand having other people pump my gas. I feel like I have to tip.

The conventional rule for this is that tipping at a full serve station is only considered "the proper thing to do" if the same gas station offers both full serve and self serve for the same price.

I've only ever tipped an attendant when the weather was ridiculous and I felt bad for the guy working in such a snow storm.

I tipped this gas station attendant on Easter because how could I not??

he was offering all the customers candy from his basket when he wasn't filling tanks or cleaning windshields un-asked. He is always dressed up for holidays and always in colorful cowboy boots. In the summer he pumps gas in shorts and cowboy boots. This is upstate NY.

(it's the only full serve station I've ever seen in our area so I go there once in a great while but generally I prefer to pump my own gas because I don't have any ten minutes to spend at the gas station normally.)
