Nah, can't be, I sent Faces of Stone, Lonesome Clown and Wheel of Time in his roulette.

What if - in a out of the blue kind of twist - the red judge is one of the players? I think it can be Sacul, he always seems to get the high scores from red. And I can't read red's tastes so it all fits.  :lol

Edit: and he tends to write short writeups too. It's definitely him.

The writeups are on the shorter side of things, yeah.. but Sacul is not the only one. The last result I got in a roulette was literally this:

Quote
3 - Destrage - Purania - Train of Naught

Spicy.

 :rollin

Since the very beginning I thought splent was the mystery judge, but every once in a while I notice something that makes me think it can't be, it's still my best bet though. Show your face mystery man!!

Well, I can't say I'm surprised that you you didn't like the song that much, I just hope the other 2 judges do.

yeah, 'cause it's bosk

No way, I sent a lot of post rock and the red judge liked it so no Bosk

What if - in a out of the blue kind of twist - the red judge is one of the players? I think it can be Sacul, he always seems to get the high scores from red. And I can't read red's tastes so it all fits.  :lol

They did this in the first roulette of champions but they made sure that judge was eliminated before the finals so I don't think it's Sacul though you have some good arguments  :lol

100% factual list of people it's not:

- It's not me
- It's not Tyrias or 425
- It's not anyone who participated in, or was eligible to participate in, this Championship

Maybe. If so, how does it feel to be eliminated by Taylor Swift?

But seriously, I've got three listens in. I can deliver writeups after a fourth listen tonight, or after a fifth listen tomorrow morning or early afternoon. I'll lean towards doing it after a fifth listen tomorrow, unless people really really want them tonight.

And I slipped into the busiest semester of college so far it ain't funny :lol

Like, I only enter here to comment a few posts and that, don't have time to keep the survivor by now. Will surely retake it after things calm down, mostly on the next semester as it won't be as savage.

Alright, here they are.

One thing occurred to me for when you see the scores, especially since two of you played in my roulette: Even though we're doing these out of 10 points, don't think about these scores based on what scores I would have given in my solo roulette. I've made a conscious attempt in this one to be a little more critical and thus the scores here are probably a half point to a whole point lower than they would have been in 425's Overinflated Scores Roulette. The best way to judge my scores for these songs compared to other songs, if you are so inclined, is to compare them to scores I've given in this roulette by multiplying them by either 1/2 or 3/2 to match with scores out of 5 or out of 15.

Beyond that, I have little more to say. This was a good round, but there was a definite third place finisher and a clear favorite as well.

Evermind: Blind Guardian - Wheel of Time

To my utter shock, Evermind sent an epic power/symphonic metal song in the finals portion of a roulette. :P

This is really one of those massive songs that I appreciate for its scale and scope, particularly when it executes well. And this one does execute pretty well. The symphonic elements add to the song instead of just serving as ornamentation as they sometimes can do. There are some interesting vocal melodies, particularly in the “response” section of the chorus (the part that isn’t “the grand wheel of time”). And there’s a nice Eastern influence that gives this a somewhat different vibe.

One of my favorite aspects of symphonic metal is that there are sometimes quiet parts where the symphonic part takes the lead, and then it bursts back into the metallic section, and this one has one of those, which I like. Here, there’s kind of a section where the Eastern guitar work takes over, then gives way to a swelling orchestra that then leads back into a full band vocal section. I think it’s pretty cool.

There’s not really anything to dislike here. This is a good, epic track.

Nekov: The Apple Seed Cast - Great Lake Derelict

So here we have a kind of post-rocky guitar-centric rock song. I say guitar-centric because the guitar really is the main attraction on this track. There’s a lot of good and at time unconventional melodic work that the guitarist on this one is doing, particularly in the intro, but really throughout the whole thing.

The vocal parts are good as well, though they aren’t the centerpiece of the song. The singer is a bit nondescript, but his voice is pretty good. There are some good melodies that make this song pretty memorable vocally as well as in terms of guitar work.

The weird part about this song, in my opinion, is the percussion. The drumming is very, very busy, which is something that I’m not really crazy about. It just seems like it’s taken to an unnecessary point at times. However, as I got used to some of the unusual rhythms in this one, it started to make more sense to me. This is definitely the one this round that has most benefitted from a higher number of listens.

Sacul: Florence + The Machine - Seven Devils

Sacul needs badly to figure out how to impress me early in a roulette. Both times, he’s had a slow start but really gotten into the groove of what I like towards the end and started putting up good scores. This song won’t break that trend.

Dissonant violins? Who cares, that part lasts like 10 seconds and it’s in the background.

This song is really incredible. Sacul, we may have a lot of musical disagreements, but one area where we can agree, I think, is love of atmosphere. This song has an awesome, dark atmosphere. There’s almost a churchy sense to this one, but in a dark way. It kind of reminds me of the atmosphere of a lot of Susanne Sundfør’s music, really, but a little different—definitely its own thing.

Florence (I assume that’s the name of the singer :lol ) parts on a really impressive and powerful vocal performance in this song. I love the vocal layering that goes on in the chorus and everything else about the chorus as well.

This is just a fantastic song, one of the best you’ve sent in this roulette. And the best of this round, in my opinion.
And if spirit's a sign,
Then it's only a matter of time

Sacul should really thank me for rejecting his song, the way this is turning out.

And funnily enough, I think our write-ups on nekov's song are pretty much opposites. You liked what I found nothing particularly amazing, and vice-versa.

Quote from: Mr. Red
Do not fret, all shall be revealed in due time.

The Appleseed Cast - Great Lake Derelict
This is an interesting blend of many different genres of music. I think it is unique and adds to how much I like it. It almost has that indie pop/rock sound that is popular at the moment in mainstream music but yet maintains an underground feel to it due to it's complexity. It still has a driving beat, but the piece is so intricately played (especially in the drums) that it almost has a prog feel to it even though (subjectively speaking) it doesn't have that feel to it, at least not this piece. The piece slowly builds up a crescendo to the end to it's climax as well, so the song doesn't stay in one place, even though it is a little repetitive in some of the thematic material in the instrumentation. Overall very good, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Blind Guardian - Wheel of Time
Yes, I haven't heard hardly any Blind Guardian. Can you believe it? It's true. This probably is a huge clue that plays into figuring out who I am. Anyway, I want to hear more after hearing this. This is solid symphonic metal. What really draws me in is that it isn't "Symphonic"... meaning that it's played by actual instruments. Sometimes "Symphonic" metal has classical themes but all the instruments are played on the synthesizer and I feel that's a cop out. This was very well done. The vocalist is SOLID. His voice fits PERFECTLY within the music, and I love the choral sound behind him as the chorus built up, especially in the recapitulation at the end. Very well done, I hope to hear more from this band in the future.

Florence + The Machine - Seven Devils
I know who F&TM are but don't know enough of their music to warrant banning them... I have liked what I heard (except when they sing live on SNL), and this isn't an exception. This is again well done. I love the mysterious sound that the song puts forth with the vocalist kind of holding back to reveal almost a more mysterious vocal line leading into the chorus, and then the ethereal, mystical sound the chorus puts forth is well done. I do want to hear more of their music, but I have heard a couple of songs they've done that I've liked more, and the song does tend to get a little repetitive at the end (not so much where it's dragging, but enough where I feel it). Still a very solid song.

Know who I am yet?  ;)
