Bring back MST3K
« on: December 04, 2015, 11:52:13 AM »
In case anyone hasn't heard or is interested in Mystery Science Theater 3000, there is a Kickstarter campaign underway to bring back the show with a new cast.

One of my favorite shows of all time.

Great show.  But I'm not sure a reboot is necessary, or even desirable, for that matter.  As good as it was, I feel like there is only so much that show could bring to the table, and it kinda ran its course.

If they DID do it, I would want to see them bring back some of the original, or older characters, such as Joel, Frank and Forrester.

I think it has potential.

The new host and voices of the bots are people I've never heard of.    But Felicia Day is playing the new mad scientist (apparently written as Dr. Forester's daughter, Pearl's granddaughter).   And Patton Oswalt is the new "TV's Frank"...I think that casting is a sheer stroke of brilliance!

They are doing it. They are already funded for six new episodes and are nearly funded for nine new episodes. Trying to get to twelve new episodes for the project to show there is enough interest to keep the show going.

I think the new hires are terrific, and Joel has sent out invitations to all of the original cast to participate in some way.

Here's a taste of the new voices of Tom Servo and Crow. Two young standups, Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yount. I think they're going to be great, and I agree that Patton Oswalt was genius casting as TV's Son of TV's Frank.

The only really big question mark here is... Can they do it without Mike?   Mike was the head writer going all the way back to the first cable season of the show.  With the exception of the KTMA episodes (which were horrible) they've never done this without Mike.

Then again, they did Cinematic Titanic without Mike and that was brilliant.  But you also had 5 of the 8 original writing team involved with that.

I'm just hoping Joel got some great writers.  Because by his own admission, he was the weakest "riffer" of the entire bunch, which is kinda why they hired Mike in the first place.

$6.3 Million, highest in Kickstarter history.    Because they got almost a full million more than they asked for, they have decided to do 14 episodes...two more than the maximum promised.

MEGA BUMP!!!!

Joel is trying for season 13, and his own network, if I’m interpreting it correctly.

Season 11 was a bit shaky, but started to find its rhythm late. Season 12 settled in a bit, and I felt it was a bit stronger.

I contributed enough to this new season 13 to guarantee a physical copy (because I’m all about physical media) but I thought I’d drop this here because I know there are some mysties here.

I contributed to the last 2 efforts and I did to this one as well. I also dropped the money for the physical option as I did for the last 2 seasons (I have the special Backer editions of the last 2 seasons).

If they reach their next goal Joel will put his suit back on and riff an episode. If they meet the total goal he will do more than one.

I watch MST and Rifftrax almost daily. I mean, I have all of the MST DVD releases and I also own a bunch of Rifftrax, all the Film Crew stuff and all the Cinematic Titanic stuff. Thanks to the MST and Rifftrax channels on various free streaming Roku channels, I seem to almost always have something on at some point.
