Rank Scenes From a Memory
« on: November 29, 2015, 12:07:34 AM »
I am of the honest opinion that this whole album is better than the sum of its parts.  If I take each individual song by itself, the album is like number 5 in my order, but looking at the whole thing and its story it's number 2, only beaten by Six Degrees.  Anyway, here's my order.

12. Through My Words- It's like a minute so...yeah.
11. Home- Overrated beyond belief.  Feels much longer than it actually is.
10. The Spirit Carries On- Doesn't do much for me.  I can listen once in a while, but meh.
9. Regression- Really enjoy it for its whole 2 minutes.
8. Overture 1928- Solid instrumental, but not amazing.
7. Beyond This Life- A bit overrated, but I still enjoy this one a lot.
6. Through Her Eyes- Underrated IMO.  Such an emotional song, very well written.
5. One Last Time- Very underrated.  The first half is incredible.  One of Labrie's best performances IMO.
4. Fatal Tragedy- Great song all around, no complaints here.
3. The Dance of Eternity- Deserves all its praise.  Fantastic song.
2. Strange Deja Vu- Extremely underrated.  Such a well constructed song.
1. Finally Free- The best on the album, such a fantastic ride.

12. Through Her Eyes - bleugh
11. Through My Words - short
10. Regression - vaguely better than TMW
09. Strange Deja Vu - Rather good, actually, but everything else is better
08. Overture 1928 - Good, but a lot of this is in other songs since it's, well, an overture
07. The Dance of Eternity - a bit wacky for the sake of being wacky but i do like this
06. One Last Time - great piano, good climax
05. Beyond This Life - everything left is top 50, this just happens to be a little less great than the rest
04. Fatal Tragedy - like the first half but love the instrumental half
03. Home - womp womp. also the intro. also the first part of the instrumental. heavy in all the best ways.
02. The Spirit Carries On - beautiful, one of Petrucci's best solos
01. Finally Free - one heck of an album closer, so many cool parts, drum outro is so intense

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Like OP said, the whole is greater than the individual parts. Ranked like this, SFaM is only at #7, but is probably higher if I'd rate the entire album.

If I ranked every DT song, I'm not sure anything from SFAM would even make my top 20 (possibly TSCO might just sneak in at best), and yet like the OP it's my 2nd favourite only just nudged out by SDOIT. Definitely greater than the sum of its parts, which is why I've never listened to it in individual parts. It's DT's best album experience, as opposed to just being a collection of excellent songs.

1-.12 Masterpiece.

The whole album is the best thing ever happened to mankind after the discovery of fire and the development of human rights. End of the story.

But seriously... all the "real" songs (Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy, Beyond this Life, Through Her Eyes, Home, The Spirit Carries On and Finally Free) are all masterpieces. Sure Home and Finally Free stand out, but they're all great. Both instrumentals are gorgeous (The singalong during Overture 1928 at live shows always gives me goosebumps), and the intro tracks (I consider One Last Time an hybrid, of course it's not a short interlude but not a fully formed song either) are good and not filler material at all.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

At least I'm not the only one who likes Through Her Eyes more than The Spirit Carries On  :lol I'

However I don't really get the ''whole is stronger than the parts''. I feel all the non-Regression and non-Through My Words songs stand solidly on their own (maybe a bit less lyrically, but I'm sure you could find a more general meaning for most of them)

It's funny - so many have 'Through my Words' toward the end of these tracks (understandable, as it's so short), but for such a short piece, I absolutely love that track. Yes it's tiny, but in that tiny song is a whole bunch of emotion, a great transition from Strange Deja Vu and a perfect tie in to Fatal Tragedy. James is quite haunting on this little number and it makes me want to hear more. I often have it on repeat when I listen to this album.  :tup

11. Through her Eyes
10. Through my Words
9. Regression (Don't know why, but I love the part that JLB actually sings in. Great start to the album).
8. One Last Time
7. The Dance of Eternity
6. Fatal Tragedy
5. Beyond this Life

4. The Spirit Carries On: Emotional, beautiful solo. The "Safe in the light that surround me" part might be the single best motif on the album.
3. Home: Incredible song. Great vocal melodies by JLB.
2. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu: I know this is kind of cheating, but I consider them one song and I refuse to separate them!

I keep misreading the thread title every time I visit the DT-side: Rank-scenes from a memory. It instantly brings to mind and incident I was involved in during the summer between my Junior and Senior years in Highschool. You see, I was standing at a street corner in downtown Phoenix...

Yeah, never mind.

3. The Spirit Carries On
4. Strange Deja Vu
5. Overture 1928

6. Home

7. Fatal Tragedy
8. Through Her Eyes
9. Beyond This Life (I find this song more overrated than Home, tbh)
10. Regression (I love this song. The acoustic guitar and James singing leading into Overture is way better than going straight to the Overture to open the album.)
11. One Last Time
12. Through My Words

Top 5 make my top 30, Home sneaks into the top 50, the other 5 do not. As a whole, also my second favorite album behind Six Degrees.

I can't do this. It's like dissecting Dark Side Of The Moon, and saying that Speak To Me is a weak song because it's a bit over a minute long.

I like Overture and Strange Deja Vu, like The Dance of Eternity, FT and Home even more, and love Beyond This Life. BTL is the only one from the album in my top 15, and the only song from the album that made my eyes tear a bit .Yeah, this song, and not TSCO. Yeah, I am a strange guy
