Goddammit, Surrounded is such a good song.
« on: September 29, 2015, 07:31:02 AM »
I think the part 2:03 to 2:16 is my favorite.  It's got a Bach-like superposition of bass, guitar and vocal melodies that only happens at that time in the song, although the elements are repeated elsewhere in the song.

The whole cheesy early 90's feel of this song and the album as a whole is totally overcome by this sort of thing. :tup

I'm currently laughing at my past self, who called Another Day and Surrounded "two boring tracks that dragged IAW down".
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Love this song, and while I get the criticisms of the set generally, I like the Chaos In Motion version almost as much as the studio version!

One of the best versions ever. I think it blows the doors of the studio version as most live versions do anyway in my opinion.

I'm actually not fond of that version.

I like the different intro quite a bit, as well as the PF part, but the Marillion addition brings it way down for me.

The studio version is my favorite, but the 08 version is awesome too. I love extended instrumentals so it'd be pretty hard for me to dislike it.

Never really liked this song.

Then I saw Live at Luna Park in the theatre (theater) and it hit me.

Weird how you can hear a song one billion times but then one day your entire view changes.

I was actually just listening to the I&W demo version on the way home today.

Call me spoiled, but I don't like the way James would sing (and the band would play) the word "blind" near the end. It doesn't sound as final and fitting as a conclusion (the rest of the song can be seen as more of a coda) as the original (and many more recent live performances, such as LALP) do.

Spoiled! J/k. I actually agree, but I think it was a really good performance furthermore and especially the Wait For Sleep before it. I prefer to watch this live video when listening to these songs.
And my 'look at' was actually referring to aesthetics lol.

My favourite version of Surrounded is clearly LALP, both for it's undeniable quality and for an emotional factor: I managed to salvage a very rough sounding youtube video of it before all the recordings of the Buenos Aires shows were taken down, and would listen to it times and again in the year between the performance and the release, savouring (as much as the horrific quality would allow) the especially strong performance I know I would one day witness on a more appropriate support.

Necessary Disclaimer: My life is much happier than one would be lead to desume from he above paragraph. :P

Love the song.  Would this song be difficult for James to sing at this point in his career?  I know it has been discussed before about other songs that may give him some problems.

Depends on the day with him (seems so). It's a really challenging song vocally (even I have a hard time singing it while being female). Nowadays his voice sounds a bit strained macaroni when reaching so high.

Just curious, but why?  Because it's Marillion, or that song?   I only ask because I have heard that song a bazillion times (BIG Marillion fan) and Mother a quadzillion times, and I never put them together until then.   It was like clouds parting.  Point being, that is the part that really made it cool for me.

I'm not fond of Marillion in general.  I know they are much loved, but they have never clicked with me.  So the inclusion of that is a distraction for me.

I can see that, especially that song, which was more than a passing nod to the charts (and not a huge favorite of mine either).

The Chaos in Motion version is by far my favorite version of that song. Love the extended instrumental section and the intro. First time I heard that I had tears in my eyes. Sublime emotion in JP and Jordan's playing. :metal

Well as people mentioned, Luna Park was fairly recent still. He pulled it off pretty damn well including the high parts. I'd be more worried about when they next pull out Take the Time, which is bound to happen.

I listened to that extended version once. It was good, though a little long. The Mother guitar part was OK, but I didn't know what the hell sugar mice were. So I googled it, then YouTubed it. That lasted for about 30 seconds, which is about 27 seconds more than I can usually tolerate Marillion.

Probably my least favorite song off IaW, which is like ranking orgasms. Great song, worthy of praise and inclusion in setlists, with no added parts from other songs, thank you kindly.
