Finally, an official release date (May 25th)

Soulspell - Act IV: The Second Big Bang

Oh, and for those not familiar with this project, here's a few of the guest vocalists on this one - Arjen (who also offers guitar and keyboard contributions), Ralf, Daisa, Andre Matos, Ripper, Oliver Hartmann, Fabio, Timo K, and Blaze.

Big fan of parts 1-3.

I remember trying them on a previous album, and being mostly underwhelmed.  I think someone else had pimped them here on their last album cycle?

It was my first foray into their music; I enjoyed it. It's a bit different.

So you did.  It was better than Killswitch Engage.  As I look at my tracking of that roulette, it was after the Odd Logic submission that you threw in the towel.   ;)

Yeah, I was scraping the bottom of the barrel for most of that roulette even before that point. I just didn't have the volume of suitable material necessary to compete. Although, I do regret not sticking to the plan the whole way through and sending what I originally had in mind.

Just played Blood|Fury|Domination yesterday - I think you referenced it a while ago, John.  Undead as the single was crap, but the rest of the album was pretty nice.

I spun this earlier this morning - more Italian metal.  Male/female vox, where the dude is a dead ringer for Dan Swano.

I remember enjoying their EP a few years back.  Should probably check out their debut now.

Yes, they've went the prog metal route on this one and it just might be their best yet. Universal Death Squad is my personal favorite at the moment.

I've given Epica more than enough tries, and I enjoy them plenty, but something just doesn't click.  And Jansen's growls don't help.  I just keep thinking "why am I not listening to Nightwish, or Xandria, or Anneke or Delain, or ... "  I'm not gaga (as Kramer would say).

My reasons, Simone is the best singer of all of them.  She is easily my favorite female vocalists and Im just talking about vocals, not looks  .  But I mentioned this in the Epica thread, the growls are the best they've ever sounded on this album.  I couldn't stand them before, but they were actually enjoyable here.

She's definitely my favorite female singer these days. She's matured so much since Phantom Agony.

I have never been able to get into Xandria or Delain that much. I can listen to them, but they don't click as much for me. I love Anneke, Nightwish, Tarja, Within Temptation, Sirenia, After Forever, etc.

Most of those bands aren't really prog either, or at least not as prog as Epica is.

I really like Delain, but they are pretty straightforward.  Going to see them Monday in the city with Hammerfall.

The vocalist reminds me of Mark Evans in certain spots. There is definitely a heavy Genesis influence, like you mentioned.

First song from new band VUUR:
VUUR - Days Go By - London

I like it a lot.  Anneke is amazing and the music is awesome.  The mix is not the best IMO, but the song is great.  Definitely reminds me of The Gentle Storm, which makes sense given the band members.

I figure a good amount of this album will hit the sweet spot for a few of you around here.  Thinking specifically of RJ and Chad.  Take a listen if you haven't heard it already.

I've really enjoyed what I've heard.

Just pre-ordered my Anneke signed copy of Vuur's debut album.  All pre-orders are signed.  I'm really not one who collects autographs or even buys CDs anymore, but I saw that this morning and immediately bought it ($27 after shipping and taxes).  I've just become a big Anneke fan over the last year or so and have dug what I've heard from this band so far.

I interviewed Anneke, check it out: https://lotsofmuzic.weebly.com/home/new-interview-with-anneke-van-giersbergen-from-the-band-vuur

Awesome  :metal :metal She seems like such an amazing person and while I still haven't received my signed copy of the album, I am excited to be graced by her presence at Prog Power next year.

also, from your interview:

Quote
Rodrigo: What advice would you give to young bands these days, given the state of the music business?

Anneke: Really, just find your own voice and sound. Be yourself. It’s the only way to stand out. Read your contracts and be smart. Use social media and do not mope or be negative. Even if you are down, find out how you can make things better, don’t complain.

Wow, so true and feels like she's talking about a certain someone (I don't think so, but given DTF, that's what comes right to mind).

Finally dove into the VUUR album.  Really digging it, it's not an amazing album, but it's really solid.  I'll agree Rio and Berlin are up there, definitely digging Santiago and Mexico City as well.  Anneke's voice is so amazing, but I find the music at times to be a bit lacking.  It's not bad, but feels samey through a lot of the album, not a whole lot of variation in the song writing.  I don't think there's a bad track here, but if I were to say Rio was my favorite, it's not blowing me away.  I'd give the album about a 7.5 or so.  I gave a similar rating to Sons of Apollo but for different reasons.

Been really digging the new band Cyhra though, they aren't prog but their debut album landed the same time as VUUR and Sons of Apollo and I find that album significantly better than either of these bands.  Mostly due to extremely catchy vocal melodies.  I've found the songs I come back to are the ones that have those such as VUUR's Freedom - Rio, Sons of Apollo's Alive.

I'm going to post this just to start following the thread...

I want to secretly check out the bands ya'll are talking about here...
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

No need to be secretive.

@ Cram... VUUR was a good enough listen, but nothing stood out enough that would compel me to go back to it.  I've seen the name Cyhra in the feed of a few of my FB peeps.  Haven't gotten around to checking it out though.  Guess I have to now.

Couple bands I found recently were Prospekt (thank you RJ), and Eagleheart.  Both had releases this year that kick major ass.  Definitely on the  :metal side of the discussion.
