As soon as you said that, I knew it had to be Vasilis Georgiou.  Check out his other stuff - Chronicles Project, Black Fate, Innosense - if you like that.

Well, I can't use them, because I'm playing "nice"... Brent gave these guys to me, so I've personally put them off limits to use for you.

Meet the band, Almanac

1. Check out song from their album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGe8SslnyvI

2. Buy album

3. Enjoy  :metal

If you like melodic Prog/power metal with symphonic elements and really good male vocals (no cookie monster), you will probably like this.

Think: Russell Allen singing for Kamelot  :lol

Brent sent me this one describing it as Allen/Lande meets Avantasia, I rather agree. Really liked Self-Blinded Eyes and Darkness / Hands Are Tied. Purchase is probably coming soon.

Brent has been seeing to it that Almanac is making the rounds in recent roulettes.
I'll have to give it another listen, because it didn't really jump out at me while sampling during Evermind's roulette.

I really dislike "tech" or "Djent" or "math" whatever you want to call it - where it's all about awkward rhythms on the low B string with the snare NEVER on 2 or 4.

I find it incredibly uncomfortable to listen to and actually has NO groove at all.

Not much for that djent style either but there's this band called Shattered Skies - they have some djent elements to their music but it's so much more than that.  Check 'em out

I'm with ya there Barry - on the style, and this band specifically.  RJ pimped them hard a while ago.  Purchase was made.  I had their previous album (Reanimation), and was fairly 'meh' about it.  The World We Used To Know is excellent though.

I wouldn't even know what to categorize it as, so that makes it prog. :lol It's a pretty killer track. There's a lot of different things happening here. The cover makes me think it's going to be power metal, but I wouldn't call it that. It reminds me of Symphony X, like how one moment you think they're a power metal band and then the next moment it's some obscure prog melody. I'm listening to a different track now - Astrid Falls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwsLxPBknOk

Nice catch with this one.  :metal

I've listened to the first half of Periphery's Alpha And Omega album, Alpha. And it's really amazing. It's not fair to lump a band like them into just the djent category.

I don't understand what's not supposed to be 'fair' about categorizing a certain band by the genre/style they associate themselves with, it's perfectly logical.

That said, you seem shocked at the quality of their music, come on man, Periphery has always been amazing :metal

they're probably the single most "standard" band of the current wave of djent  :lol
Yep, when you look at Animals As Leaders, Periphery's amount of djent is childs play compared to them. Which is probably why I like Periphery and don't like AAL. 2djent4me

Resurrecting this thread for a bit since there is no official thread for the band.

Greek progressive metal band Need announces their new album, Hegaiamas: A Song for Freedom, to be released at January 17th.

1. Rememory (6.59)
2. Alltribe (7.34)
3. Therianthrope (6.29)
4. Riverthane (7.24)
5. Tilikum (7.48)
6. I.O.T.A. (5.05)
7. Hegaiamas (21.52)

Orvam: A Song for Home was pretty damn awesome, if you ask me. I have high expectations for this one.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

That Need album is amazing, BTW.

In the spirit of keeping certain bands/styles in the proper thread, I figure I'd not clog the classic hard rock thread any more.

I am so looking forward to this one - Pyramaze trailer
