Modern Prog & Prog-Metal discussion thread
« on: September 24, 2015, 12:56:44 PM »
So, we have a Power Metal thread; Hard Rock/classic metal; Death/Thrash metal; Stoner Metal; Extreme metal; hell, we even have a RAP thread.  Can't find a general prog/metal thread.  So, here's as good a reason as any to start it.  This is for bands/albums not really needing their own dedicated thread.

I think Tim pimped this a while back...

With a lineup like this, I'll be picking this up on the 16th next month:
Finn Zierler (BEYOND TWILIGHT) - keyboards
Kelly Sundown Carpenter (BEYOND TWILIGHT, FIREWIND, DARKOLOGY) - lead vocals
Per Nilsson (SCAR SYMMETRY, KAIPA) - guitars
Truls Haugen (INSENSE, CIRCUS MAXIMUS) - bass, vocals
Bobby Jarzombek (FATES WARNING, HALFORD, SPASTIC INK) - drums

Certainly some talented musicians.

New song from Zierler;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM71torFNBQ&feature=youtu.be

Fuck yeah, this is pretty dark and epic.  Very different.  Reminds me a bit of mix of POS and Beyond Twilight in places a little actually.

This Zierler album is very, VERY dark.  You're gonna love it Kade.  Kelly Carpenter sounds terrific - as usual.  Gonna take a couple of listens to digest, but I think I'm gonna like this one.

Sounds great mate.  I mostly keen for the guitar work from Per, he's great.  Might just get a digital copy of this one though.  Unless it absolutely blows me away.

Couldn't recent Iron Maiden technically be considered modern Prog/metal? Or perhaps they're really more progressive as opposed to "Prog"?

I know this will bring a smile to many ears:

From Serenity's FB feed.

‪#‎newalbum‬ is getting ready...and meanwhile, something has happened at Artesonika Recording Studio during the last couple of days...
Fabio D'Amore wants to say hi!!
‪#‎StayTuned‬!!
‪#‎serenity_band‬ ‪#‎fabiopathosray‬ ‪#‎newrecordiscoming‬ ‪#‎NapalmRecords‬ ‪#‎recordings‬

Is Serenity recording an album, or is Pathosray.  Either way, I don't care.  I is excite.

I like Subsignal, but they tend to bog their albums down with too many ballads and slow songs.

That's just a part of their style.  I'm not really going into a Subsignal album expecting balls out metal all the way through.

And branching off from the last couple of Sieges Even albums, they have been nothing but consistent in style, so no one should really expect anything different.

Yup I know it's their style, and of course I'm not expecting anything heavy.
But they seem to be making the same album over and over.

I find a lot of his stuff like that - every now and then he nails a memorable melody but I have struggled with a lot of his more recent material.

Reminds me heavily of the last Lulu album, which was quite enjoyable.

This does have some nice melodies but don't know if it's something at the moment that I'd spend a lot of time repeating.

hmpff.... thought it'd be right up your alley.  It's pretty 'dense' that's for sure, but something about it clicks - maybe because I just crave for Carpenter to lend his voice to something memorable - and Darkology/Outworld/Beyond Twilight just didn't do it for me.
