I know this idea is probably supposed to fantasy, and just for fun, but I based my criteria on some realities that have to be taken into consideration.

For one thing, I think it's best to pick songs that we know sound good when played by the current version of the band, which I mostly base on the Luna Park show, and how my three choices sounded in it.

A lot of people think that DT never did anything better than their first three albums. Some say not even as good. So for that reason, I think my selection of one track from each of those albums is a sound one.

I also think it's good if any song or songs that become a permanent part of their live show(s) not be too terribly long, and all three of my selections combined would almost certainly take up less than 20 minutes of the entire playing time.

I don't really care where in the show these songs would be played, but I would prefer that they be somewhat spread out, and not more than one of them should probably be in the encore.

Anyway, they are as follows:

1) A Fortune in Lies
2) Surrounded
3) 6:00
I can't stop the world from turning around, or the pull of the moon on the tide, but I don't believe that we're in this alone, I believe we're along for the ride...

Ah, Long time no see Chaos!
I would pay lots of extra cash for a ticket if they were to play Surrounded, specially the '07 version (without the Sugar Mice part, tho)

Playing Overture 1928 without playing Strange Deja-Vu right after is an unforgivable crime, how can you even consider such a thing?
Not as cruel as playing The Crimson Sunrise alone, tho, you have to have a very cold heart to do that.

I'm still expecting them to play The Crimson Sunrise followed by Raw Dog as the encore of some concert.

The Glass Prison.. Seriously, why we haven't this immortal song at every show right now?

Stream of Consciousness.. Just to be sure that I'm going to see at least ONE song from ToT in my life.. Ironically (because it's my favorite) it's the only album I haven't seen any of its songs live.. :millahhhh

The Ministry of Lost Souls.. Such a nice song.. It has both side, perfectly balanced..

Although Metropolis and TSCO are the winners by a wide margin, the rest of the choices are very varied..

Awesome thread btw..

As a Queen fan, the 'WWRY/WATC/GSTQ' hit home.  You knew that the show was ending, you knew what you were getting, and it was the perfect encore.  So, I'd love to hear 'Razor's Edge' as the last encore one more tour.  Or, since it's only part of 8vm, it does not count.  And, if I'm allowed to stretch the letter of the law, with encores not being part of the 'concert proper', I can get an extra full vote.
So, I'll give half votes for  'Pull Me Under'  and 'Metropolis ' to alternate in the encores.

For the concert proper, half votes for 'The Spirit Carries On' or 'This Is The Life' would be played midway through.  A full vote for  'As I Am' to follow and get the people headbanging again.  A full vote for 'Breaking All Illusions' as the penultimate or final song of the concert proper.
...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

I already commented in this thread, but I think that they should alternate between Metropolis, A Change of Seasons, and Octavarium as their encore. I also stand firm that Pull Me Under and The Spirit Carries On should be in every set. If they're not touring for a specific album, then PMU should be the show opener and The Spirit Carries On should always be the first set closer. Also, if they're not touring for an album and closing the second set with the big epic/mini epic from said album (like Illumination Theory on the Along For the Ride tour), then they should close their main set with either Take the Time, Finally Free, In the Name of God, The Count of Tuscany, or Breaking All Illusions.

Dayuum, that´s hard  ;D

Well, I hoped they´d play Metropolis pt.1. when I saw them live and they played it, so a dream fufilled :lol.

What else... Lines in the Sand and A Change of Seasons... they only played Innocence back at Kulttuuritalo, so at least a part of that I have seen, but it´s not enough  :tdwn. LITS would be too awesome to handle.

Can I swap Metropolis with Surrounded if we´re talking about songs I haven´t seen?  :hefdaddy

I guess if the same 3 songs were played at every concert, I probably wouldn't have seen them as often as I have. I saw the same set list 3 times on the last tour and that was 2 too many.

WELL, some people consider all of SFAM to be one very long song, so I wouldn't mind if it was:

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (the song)

Octavarium (the song)

Metropolis pt.2: Scenes From A Memory

And yes i know that I'm sort of cheating but hey that way I would still get a 2 hour and 23 minute concert

I like your way of thinking :)

In a thread about which 3 songs would you have if stranded on a desert island, I picked the same as you except, instead of Octavarium, I said the AA suite.  Yes, it is sort of cheating but it's all hypothetical anyway.

Beside cheating (because, yeah, SFaM is not a song, and there's not a single reason for it to be) he's also misunderstanding the point of the thread.. These 3 "songs" he chose stand for a complete concert, so there always will be those three and nothing more..

Anyway, I'll add the songs to the chart.. But only the *songs*.. ;D

Ugh! Talk about predictable! That was the absolute beauty of the rotating setlists that MP put together. Altho there were certain patterns that were typically established for a given tour, nothing was ever guaranteed, and you never knew exactly what you'd see at a particular show. But to require certain songs to be played at every concert, and even where they should be played for specific tours, just NO.  :yeahright

I guess if the same 3 songs were played at every concert, I probably wouldn't have seen them as often as I have. I saw the same set list 3 times on the last tour and that was 2 too many.
I agree, especially when it's a static setlist. That is the reason why I only saw them once last year, altho I could've easily caught a second show.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

This topic is very interesting, and I'm undecided about casting my votes... At least one out of Metropolis and Pull Me Under is a no brainer, for the others I'd say The Spirit Carries On and As I Am.

The problem is that it feels weird to think about staples in the setlist, 'cause Dream Theater never had them, so it feels off to imagine a set with a song always guaranteed.

It's like having a thread "Which songs would you use to close an Iron Maiden set if you retire from the live shows their namesake song", they've spent their entire carreer ending the main set with Iron Maiden and having the big Eddie appear that any suggestion about a good last-but-not-really-last song would feel wrong, even if you'd go for the most obvious choices (Run to the Hills, Running Free etc).
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!
