If there were 3 songs DT played at every concert...
« on: September 12, 2015, 07:58:32 PM »
...for the rest of their careers, what three would you want them to be?

Note: if you're gonna cop the "DT shouldn't play any song at every show" attitude, take it somewhere else. ;)

This is just for fun.

If DT HAD to play three songs at every show, I would go with these:

Metropolis - perhaps their definitive live song, and the middle section always the opportunity for a little improv, so they could play it every night and still change it up from night to night a bit.
The Spirit Carries On - I've never seen or heard a live version where the live crowd didn't go nuts for it. It's a live fan favorite, and would be a highlight of every show they would do from now till the end.
The Looking Glass - perhaps an odd choice, but it's a short, fun rocker, and has a great live energy.  And the Mangini era probably has to have one of the three, so there we go.

Well I suppose I'll say the obvious one... Pull Me Under. Certainly not the worst song to be played every show. But I can't really think of many, DT aren't really a 'hits' band and one could argue that the variety of music is one of the appealing aspects of the band so it's hard to choose particular songs that are; iconic enough to be played everytime, but would not become too boring, repetitive or even demanding to to see or play multiple times.

I'll bite.

As I Am - while not among my list of DT favorites, I think it's a great opener.  Sets the mood great, great solo of course, how can you not be pumped up for a good show after that one.

Breaking All Illusions
- Just an all around great song with the breakdown and great solo in the middle, and a rousing build up towards the end of the song.

I Walk Beside You - Accessible song, catchy chorus, lighter mood than most of their songs so it would be refreshing during the show.

I would find it very irritating!

Seriously, that is one of the things that I like about DT (even if they've stopped doing the rotating setlists) - their setlists are not required to have any specific songs, unlike Iron Maiden where at least 1/4 of the setlist consists of the same old tired/overplayed songs, and even Rush who have 4 or 5 songs they just seem to require playing at every show.

However, in the spirit of things, I'll give it a shot. The obvious choices would be the "hits" which I would say are PMU, TSCO and maybe AIA. But since this is hypothetical, I'll go with LFaGA (fave from WDaDU), LtL (fave DT song evar) and NE (instrumental/solo section is killer, and I picked this just to annoy everyone who hates this song ).
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I'd probably have to second Metropolis and The Spirit Carries On, and add As I Am.
Metropolis is arguably DT's most universally liked song (even if not a favourite of everyone), and is a fairly representative track. While a lot of people here are sick of The Spirit Carries On, a lot of people at concerts are hearing it for the first time in person, and it's a killer live song. My other pick is As I Am, perhaps their best straight-forward metal/rocker track, and it translates well live, and it's just an awesome song.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

A Nightmare To Remember
Stream Of Consiousness
Metropolis Pt 1

I would've also said Hell's Kitchen, but I think most of that is just because I haven't heard it live yet.
Also New Millenium, but I think I read somewhere that that's JLB's least favourite song to perform, so yeah.

The Spirit Carries On

These aren't my 3 favorite DT songs, but they are all awesome in a live environment.

Only A Matter Of Time
Wait For Sleep
Hell's Kitchen

3 songs which I not only love, but are also short enough so that even if I did ever get sick of hearing them, at least they don't end up taking a huge portion of the show!

Pull Me Under (greatest hit, plus I haven't heard it live yet)
As I Am (kickass live song)
On the Backs of Angels (the Grammy song, plus hearing people sing along to the choir part is awesome)

The only song I would say they should play at every show is The Spirit Carries On. It works so well live and the crowd loves it whenever it's played. Other than that, Pull Me Under should always be played as long as it's not a set closer or encore. Also, maybe Metropolis as either a main set closer or encore.

A Nightmare to Remember and The Count of Tuscany - The perfect opener and closer. If it weren't for their impractical length I'd be all for those ones being played a lot.

But since this is hypothetical, I'll go with LFaGA (fave from WDaDU), LtL (fave DT song evar) and NE (instrumental/solo section is killer, and I picked this just to annoy everyone who hates this song ).

As weird as those choices are, I certainly wouldn't mind if they played LTL or even LFAGA (one of my favourites from WDADU also) at every show. Also the ironic responses that NE would generate would be brilliant not to mention hilarious.  :xbones

Also New Millenium, but I think I read somewhere that that's JLB's least favourite song to perform, so yeah.

Aw man really? Disappointing if James doesn't like it because I was hoping this one will return soon!  :lol

Metropolis Pt 1 - Classic DT song with all of the musical elements that DT is known for (killer instrumental section). No need to justify it's place in this list.

Octavarium - After listening to this for over 10 years I still never get sick of it. Like metropolis it has all of the elements that I love in DT's music.

TSCO - Awesome ballad that goes well in any DT setlist. Regardless of how many times it has been played!

1) PULL ME UNDER - it's their lone "hit" and thus should always be played.  Plus it's awesome.
2) CAUGHT IN A WEB - awesome, relatively short, and heavy.
3) PERUVIAN SKIES - relatively simple and great.

Yes, I picked all accessible songs.  They total about 20 minutes, leaving another 100+ minutes for the band to go nuts with a rotating set of proggy madness.

If they HAVE to play particular songs every show (which... just no.), I would say Only a Matter of Time would be a great encore or closer. Kind of like how Metallica has used Seek and Destroy for about 15 years now. The only two other songs that deserve to be played at every show are Pull Me Under and Metropolis. If they changed the set around these three songs for every tour, I think I'd be okay with it.
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

The Spirit Carries On, Breaking All Illusions, and Wait For Sleep.
All great songs, and with TSCO and WFS, there are ways to change those up, for example the recent guitar intro on TSCO.

Realistically? The most logical answer is Metropolis or Pull Me Under, Spirit, and As I Am. 3 of their biggest songs, all great concert songs, casual and die hard fan favorites. That'd be a killer encore right there, actually.

Songs that I think should be played WAY more than they are? The Glass Prison (how this juggernaut of a song didn't become a live staple baffles me to this day, 14 minutes or not.), The Dance of Eternity (yeah they just played it last tour and a little bit in 2010, but this song IS Dream Theater to me, so I feel like it should be a live staple. Entertaining as hell to watch them master it.), either LFaGA or TOTHtStS, as they're awesome and WDaDU is criminally neglected live.
