I'm so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside.

This roulette is going to follow the KISS principle. As I look back at how I structured my first two, holy crap did I make them convoluted. This time, no rules.  Send me good music.  That's it.  I'll simply offer the following guidelines.

Worth repeating from my first two roulette’s:
Quote from: jingle.boy
I'm not doing this to explore new genre's of music, so don't expect to get much love from death metal, electronica or any genre requiring "post" or "core" in its name.
Quote from: jingle.boy
If you do chose to participate... then please do so.  I'm not going to hold anyone's hand during this, or remind/chase down people who don't submit in a timely manner - and by timely, I mean within a couple of days.  My intention is for these first two rounds to take a week or so, then the main rounds to be under a week - 1-2 days for you to decide, 4-5 days for me to listen and writeup. As one of my old bosses used to say, this is the FIFO method - Fit In, or Fuck Off.

I'll notify everyone when I plan to start listening to all submissions.  Submit whenever you want, but if you don't submit a song by the time I start listening, then you're self selecting your score. No sweat off my back.

First and foremost, MAKE IT FUN.  Roulette's aren't just about sharing good music you think the organizer will like, it's about having fun. I can get excellent music recommendations for last.fm, Amazon, YouTube, BandCamp fishing expeditions, Progstreaming, and Spotify. I host a roulette to have fun WHILE discovering new music.

Banned artists.  By-and-large, I'm not formally banning anything. I'll reject a lot, so review my last.fm listening stats - it's as good a guideline as I'll give. Even if I've listened to an artist lots of times, if there are songs/albums I don't know, I'll allow it. Great example, Zydar sent me Aerosmith in my first roulette. I have their box set, and a few albums, but I didn't know what he gave me.  I'll allow that kinda stuff.  There are lots of artists I like, but I don't know everything by them. Send what you will, but I have the right to reject if I know an artist too well.  Here’s a link that includes a copy/paste of my iTunes Library for the ultra-keeners jingle.boy listening tastes.  It also has the bands that I received in my 1st two roulettes.  Here’s my jingle.boy last.fm - but the new interface sucks, and I’ve yet to find how you can sort the library A-Z.  Below is the list of artists that I have over 100 listens to in my iTunes library - all 190 bands, along with the list of saved bands I have in Spotify.  Like I said, not formally banned, but you'll likely be hard pressed to sneak one of these bands by me.  Not impossible, but most of these would be off limits.

Participants.  Come one come all.  There will be 1 or 2 qualifying rounds as I did in my last roulette. I want to get down to about 10 participants, so depending on how many people sign up, qualifying may be one round, it may be 2.  You either move on, or you don't.

Format.  After qualification, I'll have 7 rounds. After that, top 3 (maybe 4) will play a final round.

Get out of jail.  I'm going to potentially offer 'get out of jail' cards for some that I know have highly compatible music tastes, and I'm hoping/expecting to make it out of qualification. If they happen to shit the bed on a qualifying submission, I MIGHT give you a pass.  If you think you may be one of those people, don't count on it and decide you might take a risk on your first submission. You may not be one of the people I have in mind.

Submitting.  Spotify, or email me the .mp3 (chadrbelcher... I use gmail).  If not available on either, just tell me the band/song ... I have ways.  I prefer to avoid YT, as sometimes the quality is shyte.

My tastes.  For those that don't know, figure it out yourself :lol.  I will do this however - if you send a band that I already know I'm not that much of a fan of (eg, Opeth, C&C), I'll warn you that you're taking a risk.  Sometimes there's a reason that a certain band doesn't have many last.fm plays - it's because I think they suck, or I don't "get" them.  Feel free to take that risk, but I'll forewarn you.

More rules to follow when we start the official rounds.

With all that said, I intend to start listening to the first qualification round on Labour Day - September 7th.  Results will depend on how many participants I end up with.

Here’s my jingle.boy last.fm - but the new interface sucks, and I’ve yet to find how you can sort the library A-Z.
That's because you can't for the time being. The artist pages also don't have the "friends who listen to" section anymore (which was one of my favourite features), so it's pretty much impossible to find out if you've got something in your library. That is unless I wanted to CTRL+F through all 30 fucking pages of it. :mehlin

What is your preference between Spotify and MP3s? I can do either.

it has finally happened.  I started prep for this roulette back in the 60's so I have all sorts of cool bands to share -  The Kinks , The Who, Louis Armstrong......

What is your preference between Spotify and MP3s? I can do either.

For those that regularly use Spotify, go that route first.  Only trouble might be differences in licensing in Canada vs rest of world.

Any carry through of scores from the qualifying rounds (if you make it) or do we need to hold back on the seriously good shit?

Nope... Qualification is just to get to the real show.  You're either in, or your out... there's no scoring in qualification.

I think I'm required to be in this thing.

Damn right you are.

I don't like the new aesthetics, it looks like it was designed for use on phones and tablets, and on a 17" laptop screen I find it annoying. I can't imagine how horrible it is on a 20"+ desktop monitor. But I will probably get used to it eventually. What annoys me the most is that they went live with something that clearly should have stayed in beta for several more months. They replaced a perfectly fine, working website with one where hardly anything works as intended and that has a significant number of basic features missing. I don't understand why they couldn't continue to let the userbase use the old, working website while they were fixing up the new one, which is what they were doing at first.

Cool, now for the arduous task of finding the 10 bands out of a thousand that we don't have in common.
So far I've only got 11 that I have any confidence in. :lol

Oh come on, some features aren't available anymore, but you can still scrobble, and see stats, and stuff. And it looks pretty modern imo.

But I've never really used the site, beyond checking my scrobbling stats from time to time to be honest  :lol

Some pages like the one you picture above aren't that bad, but others are just a gigantic waste of space with information littered around the outside. Take this shot of jingle's library...

See, it's just nothing but empty space right in the middle of the page, with the artist name and photo on one side and the playcount on the other. Also the black bar at the top looks alright on some pages (such as profile pages) but is just an empty black box on most (probably not intentional, but then why release something this buggy in the first place?). I'm not saying it's the worst website design I've ever seen or anything, but it's not one of the better ones I've seen, that is for sure.

It's especially annoying when there was nothing actually wrong with the previous design. The site was fine the way it was.

It always boggles the mind when websites/software vendors release an "upgrade" that is clearly inferior to the old version in almost every way.  iTunes 11 was like that and I went through all sorts of trouble (incl losing my library ratings at the time) to roll back to iTunes 10.

It always boggles the mind when websites/software vendors release an "upgrade" that is clearly inferior to the old version in almost every way.  iTunes 11 was like that and I went through all sorts of trouble (incl losing my library ratings at the time) to roll back to iTunes 10.

Yeah, so much this. I disliked the new (well, not-so-new I think) 2007 Microsoft Word design; I hated the new AutoCAD design (I don't remember the year they've invented it) and I always switch to the classic layout instantly — in fact, I don't know anyone from our department (and that's about 60 people selection) who works with the default layout, and there are a lot more examples of that. I don't get why would you change something that's already working flawlessly and is approved by a thousands — no, scratch that — millions of users for something indeed mostly inferior.

I have to give Autodesk credit for leaving the option to switch to the old classic layout though.

Speaking of the roulette, I've just got back home and haven't read the OP yet. I need to fix that soon.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Oh you fuckin whiners!!!  I know for certain there are 10 songs out there that you have to use.  Kade... we know what your CD collection looks like - we all fapped to it.  Just take not of which sections of the Hard Rock thread I don't comment on.  RJ... shut your pie hole.  You've got a Bandcamp and LO.com treasure chest full of secrets.  And no complaining... it's your own damn fault for sharing stuff with me.   :P  Did you notice in my banned list that Iq is so good, they had to be listed twice.   :lol

y u no play??   :sadpanda:

@ last.fm... if you're going to release a new interface, DON'T REMOVE FUNCTIONALITY!!!  I can live with the new interface, but test it so that everything works.  My feed still tells me I've listened to no albums in the last 7 days.  So much other functionality that they are "working on putting back".  WHY THE FUCK DID YOU TAKE IT AWAY!?!?!?  Love this .... "We’re currently migrating data (including scrobbles) to our new site and to minimise data disruption, we’ve temporarily suspended some functionality. Rest assured, we’re re-activating features one-by-one as soon as each data migration completes".  What the hell... are high school interns doing the migration?  This has been going on for weeks/months.

First thing is taking your tongue out of his mouth.

That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

It's easy enough to check bands in your library on Last.fm using URLs (don't know why I didn't think of it sooner myself ) if anyone was interested.
