Come oooooooon, that Beardfish track is just fun and silly, it's not supposed to be serious at all. So basically, if I had a slightly better track in that EP instead of the Beardfish song I would have won this? Booooooo :(
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.

You had the unfortunate luck of having your longest song drag down your EP score  :(
I know it's not supposed to be serious or anything, that was pretty clear, but I just didn't enjoy it that much, sorry!

Wow, I honestly was not expecting to win this at all.

During the main competition, most of my favorite submissions underperformed while the rest kept me in it. Then, going into the EP and sticking with relatively one-note (as you said) music and tone felt like potential problem. Add to that the lack of variety, which I was very well aware of, and I'm quite surprised with the result.  :lol

Ludovico Einaudi – Uno
I really don’t have much else to say about this

Me neither!  :blush

The lower vocals here are very much what makes this song stand out, I quite like this singer’s voice.

Indeed

Glen Hansard had me a bit nervous, because of your comments in the early stages of the roulette about singer-songwriters. Ditto for Damien Rice. Glad my risks payed off in both songs.

Glen Hansard – Bird of Sorrow

First Impressions: I can tell right off the bat this is going to be a more emotional and evocative track, light piano melodies and somewhat strained vocals pretty much indicate that. Which is something I generally like a lot. The strings coming in right as the vocals get more intense creates a nice swell. The rest of the band comes in around the halfway point and the song just gets, a hell of a lot more intense, christ, those vocals are giving me serious chills man. The Sufjan song better be damn good because this is gonna be hard to top, this feels like one heck of an album closer, haha.

Final Thoughts: Again, he doesn’t sound like the most technically proficient of singers. On the other hand, god damn, this is just pure singing from the heart, and that’s going to win over a technically perfect but soulless vocal performance any day. Really, the biggest gripe I have with this song is that some of the vocal lines just have an awkward/clunky flow to them, too many words being said too fast or something.

The piano serves as a nice backdrop for the quieter moments, playing relatively standard stuff, sure, but that just lets you direct more attention towards the vocal performance that really is the main attraction here. And the strings come in for the swell of the chorus, giving it more weight.

And then, when the full band starts coming in at the second chorus, and the song just gets a hell of a lot more intense… yeah, this part of the song has unfailingly given me chills. The vocals, man. Just raw emotion. I wouldn’t ask for any other singer for this song, Hansard just nails it.

Bolded for truth

If I can nitpick for a second, though, it almost feels like the instrumentation doesn’t quite get big enough to match the vocals.

Agreed. But at the same time, I'm not sure anything could match the vocals.

Fair point about the ordering of the songs, and sticking 3 piano ballads in a row. I did that mainly because of the individual transitions  between songs, despite the samey-ness of it.

Sufjan Stevens – Fourth of July[/url]
Final Thoughts: Alright, I get why the lyrics have a lot of the cheesy name-calling going, this is just a really intimate song. I almost feel bad listening to it, like I’m peering into someone’s private life that I have no place actually seeing. I dunno, it’s just, too personal for me, almost.

Yeah, man... I went and saw Sufjan last night and I've got to say- it's especially weird seeing him perform these songs in a live setting. Still, love this album to death (top 3 album of the year for me) and I'd highly recommend checking it out when you recover from all of this.

Thanks for running the roulette! I had fun playing and I can't complain about a thing, now.

And damn, I've never seen such long write-ups for a roulette before  :lol

Honestly I felt my write-ups for this round were on the shorter side of things, just that there were a lot more of them than usual, haha...
And your EP grew on me the most of the three for sure, it was my least favorite the first time around but repeated listens can often fix that problem, clearly.

And if it makes you feel better I'll probably get that Agaloch album at some point, though it's not at the top of the list of things to get, and I'll also likely have like 5 Enslaved albums in a year or two as well since they have soooo many  :lol

I swear I had never noticed the "beep" in that song before your writeup :lol I think it's a string repeating the same note, but every timeiI'd listened to the album and song, never really noticed it after the other instruments kick in. I guess I don't pay that much attention to details in my music :P

Congrats Seneca!

If it makes you feel any better, the 8.5 I'd have given without the beep would've still only tied you with seneca and he had the tiebreaker, so  :P

Someday I'll write something that takes a list and does 1v1 comparisons of songs until there's a definite best-to-worst sort list generated from it, ahah. Maybe something like that already exists out there, I dunno.

Terrifying thought: #47 is the last song I'd rate 8.5 or higher by my current feelings on the songs, some of them it's been a while since I listened to them though. But that I have 47 songs here I'd rate 8.5 or higher is ~insane~.

As far as other things I want to say. Uh. I think everyone put at least two albums on my "to get" list, and I've already gotten three albums from roulette submissions, with plans to get somewhere in the range of 7-10 more before the end of the year, which is awesome  :tup

Was definitely fun running this, though a bit exhausting at a few points.

If I had to pick a favorite and least favorite round, uhh, hmm, Round 5 runs away with least favorite, favorite would probably be Round 3 judging by my current feelings on things  :lol But Round 1, Round 6, Round 8, and Round 9 were all great too and the EP round was pretty satisfying as well.

Other things, hmm. Rating my judging accuracy...
Round 1: A bit harsh on the lower end, I think, but mostly good.
Round 2: Most things scored a bit higher than I'd put them now, but pretty good.
Round 3: Everything was too low the first time, almost literally everything. Even some of my relistens ended up feeling too low by the end.
Round 4: I rebounded to grading a bit harshly on the low end, but the upper end I did well.
Round 5: I was too nice to most everything because the round as a whole was not very strong.
Round 6: A bit too nice to the low end, a bit too harsh on the upper end, the spread should've been wider here.
Round 7: A bit harsh on the whole, I think. I was probably a little unhappy the theme didn't work out too well.
Round 8: Maybe a sliiight bit too nice to Obsidian Kingdom but barely. Everything else good.
Round 9: Probably a little nice on the whole, but barely if so, this round was just great.
Round 10: Nah, I nailed it here.
EP Round: Again, pretty much nailed it. Maybe a few half-point discrepancies that wouldn't have affected the final outcome.

I feel my judging as a whole got better the further this went on, a little unsure of what to rate at first but when I had other songs to compare to I could pretty easily figure out what deserved what, for the most part. Still wish I'd done quarter-points though, but oh well, maybe next roulette  :lol

I bet the 117th place was the only easy choice in making the ranking :lol
However it's great to have five songs over the 47th place! I noticed that Wheezyboy who initially had a 7.5 vote is a lot higher than Ars Moriendi who was the second best song on his round. Round 5 was easily your least favourite, even Gleam In Ranks isn't ranked 8.5 now

My purpose with them was to encourage risk-taking, but I feel I should have used them in a different way, like, needing a minimum of 8/8.5 for a song from a genre I dislike instead of a 7.5, and maybe just 3 points or 2 to the song the best fits the theme instead of 4. But I won't have that system on v2 - maybe on v3, who knows.

my bonus points system was maybe a little arbitrary but i think it worked out well for the most part, next roulette i do i'm just gonna have it be "anything released before 1990 gets a bonus halfpoint" or something really objective at the very least  :lol

3 in the top 20, actually, and you reached the finals because your lowest score in any round was like a 7
also because mike would've reached the finals if not for the AAL song bombing hardcore

I'm not a good loser. I genuinely thought I was going to win though, with that huge point difference at the end of round 10.. shame you didn't count those towards the final result.

Anyway, I sent you 7 songs in the top 25, so that's good I suppose.

Thanks for running this, hope you gained some new music to enjoy
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.

they counted for the tiebreaker that almost came into play considering how close the EP scores were? sorry  :sadpanda:
