i think tuesday is when i'm gonna start listening, so if you don't have your entries in by the time i check the forums tuesday morning i'm going to dock points for lateless  :tup

on a side note it sucks that i'm gonna be basically forced to get MP3 versions of maudlin of the Well because physical copies are way too pricey/rare

Man, amen to this. I've been waiting for Blood Music to do another reissue, but it's kinda looking like it's never going to happen. Alas.

you did.
only waiting on two people and i sent out a PM a day or three ago to those who I still needed something from

side-note: your comment made me check the blood music site and Schizoid Lloyd seems to be 50% off right now, can't find shipping info though so I'm super hesitant + I ordered like 5 albums this morning  :lol

Your opinion is wrong :P
I don't know why but they were like more technical Pain of Salvation to me. Too bad I sent that song, maybe you'd like something else off that album more (I think it's their best album).

to be fair i probably should've put metallica on the banned list anyways bcuz they had an entire guitar hero game + i listened to all their albums from RTL through Black Album a few times when i was first getting into metal (never bought any though >.>)

It's no big deal. I have a small library so part of the way I make my living in these is shooting the obvious gaps in people's banned lists. Because of that tactic I expect someone to have actually heard the song I send from time to time.

this next round is going to be interesting because half the artists i've heard of (someone even sent one off the semi-banned list) and all the ones i've heard of i've heard at least something from, too

and the other half i have literally never heard of a single one of these artists and have zero clue what to expect

should be fun. will start listens tomorrow morning, i wanna finish going back through older entries tonight and seeing which scores i felt were a bit too low. did it for the first two rounds already, gotta do it for 3 and 4 too

Train of Naught: Tremonti – You Waste Your Time

I was probably just a little harsh on this one, but only a little. I like it a little more than World on Fire, so.

New Score: 6/10 (+.5)

LordCost: Vangough – Corporatocracy

Was really annoyed with this at the time but I probably was a bit harsh. Still not an outstanding song but I definitely underrated it a little.

New Score: 6.5/10 (+.5)

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Kvelertak – Mjod

I definitely underrated this one ‘cause it’s kind of catchy and got stuck in my head, and I didn’t hate it getting stuck in my head, so yeah. Not like I’m huge on it even still and I don’t exactly want to check out more from this group either, but!

New Score: 6.5 (+.5 Bonus) = 7/10 (+1)

425: Death Cab For Cutie – We Looked Like Giants

I’ve had that main melody firmly lodged into my head for the past week so it must be doing something right, dunno. Also probably complained too much about the outro going on too long ‘cause I don’t really tend to mind that kind of thing that much.

New Score: 7/10 (+.5)

FlyingBIZKIT: Dredg – Pariah

Bumping this one up a bit on the strength of the chorus. It’s a really good chorus that’s part of an otherwise okay song. Chorus only happens twice though and I’d loved to have more of it.

New Score: 7/10 (+.5)

Train of Naught: Avenged Sevenfold – Save Me

Here I think it’s more that I’m paying attention to the lyrics more than I did before, I already kinda got this was a tribute to the band’s previous drummer but the lyrics are really pretty good. I still think the mixing is off and it goes on a bit long/is a bit samey but, yeah, this is cool.

New Score: 7.5/10 (+.5)

FlyingBIZKIT: The Dear Hunter – The Thief

This is probably the most difficult song of the roulette thus far really, which makes sense seeing as I had no clue how to rate it the first time and I actually had to relisten to it twice to properly rescore it. After the relisten… yeah, I’m gonna say screw my gut and go with my brain, ‘cause I do dig this now that I finally have listened to it like, 8 times, hah. Maybe will check these guys out.

New Score: 8/10 (+1)

LordCost: ThumperMonkey – Wheezyboy

Maybe because I’ve been listening to a lot of harsher music lately but the heavy part doesn’t bother me as much now. Rest of this is still cool too, so. Yeah.

New Score: 8/10 (+.5)

Elite: Agent Fresco – See Hell

I probably didn’t pay the vocals enough mind when I was first listening to this because they’re very good and add a fair bit to an already decent song.

New Score: 8/10 (+.5)

FlyingBIZKIT: Susanne Sundfør - The Silicone Veil

Probably slightly underrated this one, I think, though I don’t have anything new to say about it, really. It’s on the same level as Bjork, mostly.

New Score: 8 (+.5 Bonus) = 8.5/10 (+.5)

senecadawg2: Foals – Spanish Sahara

I mean, yeah, I told you I was gonna up the score on this one. I’ve actually come back and listened to this more than Being Human, even, though I still vaguely like that one a bit more. It’s a shame the rest of this album didn’t really stand out to me though, heh.

New Score: 9.5/10 (+.5)

Adjusted Scores
mikemangioy – 43
Sacul – 42.5
senecadawg2 – 42
Tomislav95 – 40
FlyingBIZKIT - 40
Elite – 40.5
425 – 39
LordCost - 34
Train of Naught – 33.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 28.5

yes i know over half of these are from round 3  :lol

I didn't expect a + 0.5 on Vangough! I thought even a 2.5/10 on Slint could be more probable than this.

I don't even care about the adjustment on the Tremonti song, that chorus is kinda annoying at times, so I saw where you were coming from, what really makes my day is I got you to appreciate Avenged Sevenfold's Save Me a bit more, the lyrics in particular.
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

i refuse to ever listen to that slint song again, so, no, no points back for slint  :lol
anyways i'll start listening after i make myself lunch.
this round is the shortest round of songs by 10 or so minutes, which is probably for the best, it means y'all did good to not send me a lot of super long instrumentals  :lol

Song lengths!

2:15 - 3:50 - 4:00 - 4:25 - 4:27 - 4:41 - 4:42 - 5:02 - 6:08 - 6:26

It’s heavy, it’s dark, but it’s constantly introducing new ideas while staying firmly cohesive.

This to me sounds like a lot of the same kind of thing; not that that one thing is a bad thing, but I don’t know how well I’ll be able to distinguish any specific parts of this!

It’s all build-up with no payoff. It probably works in the context of the album but taken on its own I don’t think it works too well at all.

There’s some cool riffs and grooves and the soloing is pretty tasteful, especially the slower melodic one in the middle. There’s definitely a lot of different sections here and it’s very moody.

Ooh. The texture and atmosphere on this is fantastic. Roaring guitars and enough subtleties to make it sound very full and unsettling.

I actually get the impression that this band isn’t made up of particularly “talented” musicians in the general technicality sense, but damn can they carry a mood.

I can appreciate how talented the musicians are, but I’d much rather see them turn that towards writing interesting music rather than showing off their chops.

The build is great, the atmosphere is thick and haunting, it’s not too dark to be smothering but not remotely close to bright either.

Good pretty and atmospheric moments, crushing riffs and drumming, although none of it is especially standing out it’s very good for what it is.

There’s a fairly nice keyboard-driven atmosphere here but I’m really not sure how much I like the drums; they’re a bit loud and don’t have the greatest tone to them either.

This round is definitely looking like one of the better ones, ahah. Hopefully none of these wear on me by the time I do writeups. Nothing here I hate in the slightest and only a few I'm not as keen on from first listen.

i'll probably get the Bent Knee album too, listened to it twice on youtube and while none of the songs strike me as being as good as Being Human there are still a lot that I like and it's decently diverse. that song still rocks me haha it's great

Through the third listen, preliminary scores are done.
I think most of you will be pretty happy this round, a lot of pretty strong entries already and the ones scoring well have room to score even higher in the next two listens.
That being said, there's a few songs I'm not as fond of as the rest. But whose?

anyways i forgot to do this earlier mostly because the theme of this round is hard to put into words... hah...

Round 7: Drumhead Trial

The vague, hard-to-define theme of this round is music with a strong emphasis on rhythm. Especially interesting/nonstandard rhythms. Whether it be syncopated riffs, tight drumming, a good groove, etc. I'm not going to be too strict on the theme this round because it's pretty vague to begin with but if something pops to mind when you hear "rhythm-focused music" then you may want to go with that one.

Some good examples from this roulette would be Jolly - Where Everything's Perfect, Destiny Potato - Addict, ThumperMonkey – Wheezyboy, Agent Fresco – See Hell, Foo Fighters – Rope. Other things would be, stuff like Intronaut, Leprous' latest album, djent stuff generally has a strong rhythm focus but PLEASE do not send me djent unless it's like really good/goes beyond Meshuggah-esque riffing, I am reeeally sick of bad djent nowadays  :lol

I'll probably be lenient with this theme, like I said, and it's vague enough that you could probably shove a lot of different songs into the category fairly easily but I will definitely kick your song out if it's an ambient piece with no rhythm section to speak of so don't send me one of those.

Well damn. I noticed quite suddenly that neither Steven Wilson nor PT were on the banned list and started to freak out a bit, struggling to pick a song for this next round. Only to see him in the 'banned body of work' list with another top choice that I'd previously missed: Devin Townsend. I should've known.

I'm sending soon.

yeah the banned body of work is just because those artists have projects i haven't even looked into but i have heard more than enough from any of them and don't need more

but yes it does make my banned list look like it's missing some artists  :lol
i named one of the roulette rounds after a porcupine tree song though so
