In that vein, I've just remembered that I need to track down a song of at least an hour in length to send at some point during this roulette.

you can, but you are almost certainly going to get slapped with a 1 point penalty if you do
there is a good reason why i have one of my wagers there, and a good reason why there is no epic round  :lol

The problem is that there's like two songs that are that long. And also that I don't want to sabotage my scores just for the purpose of trying to exact a petty form of revenge. :lol

Alright, snippets from first impressions! These are typed up as I listen to the songs but I'm going to avoid being too spoilery with what's posted.

First off, here's all the track times:
2:47 - 3:45 - 4:10 - 4:33 - 4:37 - 5:30 - 6:28 - 6:55 - 8:52 - 9:51

It’s quite a lot to take in on first listen, but I get the impression that even if this song doesn’t end up with a high score, I’ll probably check out an album from these guys out of curiosity.

The riffs themselves aren’t exactly special but they’re plenty competent and there’s a lot of meat to the track so there’s no time to get tired of any of them.

There’s a lot of pieces of this that I already dig quite a bit on first listen, but it loses me at other times. And I can’t say I’m the hugest fan of the female vocalist here.

The vocals are different but not horrid, and the guitar accompaniment is far beyond basic chords, but I don’t see myself getting more out of this on subsequent listens than I did on my first listen.

This on the other hand, is a really cool instrumental with a ton of good riffs and great energy throughout. The production is sludgy but not to the point where it sounds muddled.

I like the presence of the heavier guitar and bass where the other instruments are keeping a mellower feel, it works well, and the vocals are a bit off but have charm to them.

I love the presence of the organ throughout, and the song is impressively cohesive for something so crazy. The brief breaks to do something wacky fit in really well too and they’re gone quick enough that they don’t destroy the flow of the song.

The music isn’t overly complex, and not something “new”, but it knows what works and just does it really damn well, plenty well enough to let the raw emotion of the song seep through.

It’s upbeat and energetic, it’s pleasant to listen to, but it doesn’t stand out, and in a bad way.

I haven’t really talked much about the music, have I? I think that’s because, and I gotta be brutally honest here, it’s totally fine on its own, but it’s just completely overshadowed by what I’ve been listening to recently.

First impressions are non-indicative of the final scores, but if I had to guess, the score range here is going to be about 4.0 to 9.0. Could go lower, could go higher. On the whole I'm pretty happy with what I've been given, and three of you sent me some ridiculously crazy stuff too  :lol

Now that's a surprise.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Since I'm satisfied that all the tracks sent to me are in theme enough to count, I'll open Round 2 submissions now, but won't be listening to them until after Round 1 results are posted.

Round 2: Any Colour You Like
You guys came up with some pretty funny theories for an Open Round, haha. No theme restrictions here, throw something at the wall and see if it sticks. Remember to not take any of the wagers and try to send me some cool stuff.

If this is me please like her more  :'(

And I'll starting thinking about Round 2, though I'm not sure I'll want to send until I see the Round 1 results.

I'm doing that as well. Also Parama I lied, I sent for round 2 already, because most of this roulette I'm going to be highly paranoid about somebody beating me to a particular artist.

I have a rough order of preference for the tracks and I assigned preliminary scores but I'm gonna have at least four listens on every track before I do write-ups and post results. Maybe more listens. Dunno. Generally liking the stuff that was sent though so there's that  :lol

The lowest scoring track is the only one that's getting the risk bonus, though, there's one that's boooorderline and I might end up giving it the half-point too.

I'm through four listens at this point, scores range from 4.5 to 9.5 currently and that 9.5 is daaangerously close to just outright being a 10, someone had a really strong start

i think results should be up tomorrow, i'm going to do writeups next time i listen through.
