Most Common Thread? Favorite Set-list
« on: August 12, 2015, 07:37:09 PM »
I know that this is a really popular topic on this board but it's always nice to hear people's dream live set-lists.
Here's Mine:

False Awakening Suite

Set 1:
A Nightmare to Remember
Panic Attack
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
Metropolis Pt 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
In The Name of God
Octavarium

-Intermission-

Ending of Finally Free
Set 2: (Mike Portnoy comes on stage and takes Mangini's spot)
The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
The Root of All Evil
Repentance
The Shattered Fortress
The Best of Times
A Change of Seasons
(Mike Portnoy bows with the rest of the band and then leaves)

Encore: (Mangini Returns)
Pull Me Under
Solitary Shell
Learning to Live
The Count of Tuscany

Illumination Theory Outro

So the set-list is around 3 and a half hours long (excluding FAS, FF ending and IT outro and the intermission). Perhaps it's a little unrealistic but it includes most of my favorite Dream Theater songs and I think it would be an amazing experience. Would anyone make any changes or what would your dream set-list look like?

How hilarious would it be if - instead of Portnoy leaving after ACOS - he left after The Count Of Tuscany and Mangini came back and they played On The Backs Of Angels ? :lol

I never thought to make a up a show that was more than about three hours long before, but I first put this thing together a few days ago, after I saw the OP on this thread. Then I thought: What if the band said "Screw it! Instead of going back into the studio and finishing the new album, let's spend the rest of 2015 REALLY celebrating 30 years of DT!" So I came up with a three-and-a-half hour show, with a few extras included, that I think would please MOST of the people who got to see it.

Set One:
We begin with a video on the projection screen that has various friends of the band, such as bands and musicians that they've toured and worked with, the hosts of That Metal Show, and maybe some actors and athletes and other celebrities that we didn't know were DT fans, congratulating them on their 30-year career, their success, etc.
Then a short film comes on, similar to the one from the Train of Thought tour / Live at Budokan. The music on the soundtrack is Paradigm Shift. The stage lights go up, and the band is actually plays a brief (2-3 minute) version of PS, which morphs into:
1) Under a Glass Moon
2) Surrender to Reason
3) The Glass Prison
4) In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 1
5) The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun
6) Sacrificed Sons
7) Hollow Years (Back in it's original form)
8) Erotomania
9) The Count of Tuscany
This first set would be around 80 minutes, give or take 2 or 3 min

~~~~Intermission~~~~
While the band is taking a break, comedian Jim Breuer comes out and performs a short set. I think his brand of humor is perfect for this kind of show, and for the most part, everything he does is very "family friendly." If I had it my way, he would do about a half-hour, but some people might not want him out there for more than about 15-20 minutes.
Set Two:
1) lost Not Forgotten
2) Home
3) In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 2
4) This Dying Soul
5) Metropolis
6) The Enemy Inside
7) A Change of Seasons
The second set is about the same length as the first.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

First Encore
1) As I Am
2) About to Crash
3) One Last Time
4) A Rite of Passage

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most people will be expecting the show to be as long as it is, but the band will take about five or ten minutes to catch their breath. Maybe Jim Breuer could come back out and tell a few more jokes while telling the audience that the band will be right back out to do "a little more!"
Second (Final) Encore:
1) New Millennium
2) The Root of All Evil
3) Pull Me Under
Each of the encores is ABOUT 25 minutes.
So the total time for the show, counting breaks, would probably be close to five hours.
I can't stop the world from turning around, or the pull of the moon on the tide, but I don't believe that we're in this alone, I believe we're along for the ride...
