I'm not sure I agree with you here. I think BTFW has a much better vocal performance and the energy seems much better, imho.

Yea agree about the vocals, but I'm only on Metropolis right now.  Damn that is such a tough song to sing  :lol  Thought James did fine on Afterlife.  JP's guitar sounds much better here IMO, a big reason I didn't love the last release after the initial viewing.  I also like where the guitar is sitting in the mix.  I've always enjoyed DT mixes better when JP isn't so overpoweringly prominent.

BMS sounds awesome!  :tup

I love Manginis take on the instrumental section of Metropolis! Fits well and sounds great. Just enough of his own flare to make it his 'own' but enough of the original sound to keep it the sound we all know.

Oh yea that part sounded amazing.  Want Mangini to put that part up on his youtube, or has he already?

Man JP killed the TSCO solo  :omg:   And those people in the audience crying during the song...That was great.

Definitely the most interesting CM performance I've come across. Odd how James suddenly was in gear vocally on that one. Signature version of the song is still probably Universal City '07, but it's close.
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

Wow, Afterlife is not a good choice for an opener. James is struggling.

EDIT: Ok, I have to say it right here. I know it's what James does, but on a stage the size of Wacken's, when the singer walks off the stage and the other guys  just stand there looking down on their instruments, it feels like watching a rehearsal.

Things were much better in general for JLB after Metropolis.

I don't know. Burning My Soul is also beyond his range. It's all super-strained. I've also never heard him go into that many "screeches" before.

Fortunately for him, he got better as the show went on. Afterlife and Metropolis are performances he'd probably like to forget.

One thing I've noticed with James on the past few tours is that he'll stray away from the phrasing on the album slightly during some passages (usually towards the end of a lyrical stanza/section). This is usually where he tries too hard to do something he shouldn't and it makes me want him to stick to singing the songs the way they are on the albums. Now that being said, there are little quirks he does live that are better, but he'd benefit from sticking to the phrasing from the albums.

The band sounds amazing. Great drum, guitar and bass sound (keyboards sound the same always lol, so no complaints there). Vocally, not such a great performance. Maybe he's still getting better from the flu, but most of the problems came from not reaching the notes. Poor JLB, I love him and I'm usually a big supporter of him, but this isn't him at his best.

He gets better as the show goes on. They should really consider some easy songs at the beginning to make him warm up properly. Afterlife is ridiculous (and not that good of a song).

I fully agree. The vocals on that song are all over the place. There are videos from this tour when he comes out and does great on that song, but it seems that might be the exception. So I agree with you on that. However, I love Afterlife and I'm glad they're playing it. It's one of the few 'good' songs from WDADU. The others being A Fortune In Lies, Ytse Jam, and The Killing Hand, imho. The others are enjoyable, but generally not as good.

James makes songs more difficult by improvising. He would do better on Afterlife if he sang it like Score or album version. Same thing with Metropolis. Why that: "...and stay ALIIIIIIVE..."?  :lol He did that on every live version I heard (Score?) but thing he did on album sounds better imo and is easier to sing.

It's actually not.  The thing is, leading up to that part, you have to be full-on belting it out, and there is little breathing room in that section.  I have found that it is really hard to turn on a dime and go from belting to soft on that line and have it sound halfway decent (and not feel like your larynx is going to jump out of your body).

Yeah, this one of the best mix-wise things I've ever geard by DT.
No instrument sounded intrusive, and JR was beautifully high.
John Myung stole the show, awesome, awesome bass sound.
The drums were also just in spot (altho many people apparently feel they could have been slighty higher)

Maybe Mangini could have been a little bit higher...I remember thinking this on those fast cymbal hits on the Panic Attack instrumental section where he does the interesting technique.  The mix was otherwise so perfect for me I can't complain though.  Would have enjoyed a bit more closeup camera focus on Mangini.

Just tried messing with my EQ settings to hear Mangini's cymbals a little clearer.  Turning up 10-12K (I settled on 11) 4 or 5 DB helped a lot for me  :tup

You guys are leaving out the best part....John Myung is almost smiling when they take their bows!

Aside from that, the vocals sounded really off the first two songs.  Not just James, who struggled a bit, but the actual sound of the vocals.  Fortunately, everything went better after the first two songs and I thought it was a killer performance.  I loved CM.  BMS sounded great but they clearly rerecorded the "burning my soul" altered voice and it sounded horrible.

I gotta say James sounded much better at the Metaldays festival... And I agree, Afterlife is a pretty hard song for an opener, they should have taken his warming up into consideration while creating the setlist.

Also, it's incredible how much more atmosphere there is when a show is played during night, as opposed to this daytime show.

I love the melodic ending to Metropolis Pt. 1.

It's been several yearsa already, but everytime there's a DT Youtube video uploaded, the "I wish Portnoy is back" comments still keep on coming. And because Mangini drummed the hell out of this show, people are now wishing Portnoy is back for his back-up vocals.  :lol

Yeah no kidding...that was a bummer for sure. He played his balls off and sounded great and we didn't even get to 'see' him do it.  :(

Just re-watched the show and I agree with the sentiment that JLB did improve as the show progressed....but he was rough early on.

The band sounded so tight and the mix was spot on. Agree also with the JMX comments...it was awesome to hear him so represented and awesome to watch him perform. Would love to know what JLB said to him when they were taking their bow.

JP looked as if he had seen the thread where people were questioning if he'd lost a step and he decided to slap everyone who believed so in the face to bring them back to reality. I'm fairly certain he played so many notes so fast he reversed time and killed the dinosaurs with his fingers of fire.

It's weird, James was really much stronger on Pistoia, he was basically always going for the higher phrasing throughout Afterlife! Maybe he's suffering from fatigue or he had a relapse of whatever he suffered from earlier on this tour?  :(

I hate the way he fucks up the melody at The Spirit Carries On. Vocal problems like being sick or tired, I can forgive that, but deliberately messing with an emotive song to make it sound like you're speaking, not that (This same issue at the "I found out what all of this means" part was what ruined the almost perfect performance at LALP)
Ok, you sing it everynight, it gets tedious, I agree. I wouldn't mind if he messed with CM or other more active songs, but you just can't mess with songs that create an atmosphere such as TSCO, you can hear the audience following the CD while he talks.
