Classic R&B / Funk Songs
« on: July 29, 2015, 09:28:07 AM »
Really love some great classic R&B (and/or funk) songs.  It started to go wrong in the 80s and IMO never really recovered.  This stuff was going on before I was born or too young to recall all my favorites from memory.

I'm gonna start with my favorite artist of that genre / era:  Curtis Mayfield
Move On Up
Freddie's Dead
Pusherman

I could go on forever with this guy.

So take your turn and share a song or two from this genre / era that you like.  Hopefully we discover some songs we overlooked or just forgot.

Clarification:  I included R&B and/or funk as the focus, but that is because in many cases the two go hand in hand.  But a recommendation doesn't have to have elements of both to be offered.  Just one or the other leaning toward the classic feel (think 70s)

Thread Artist Recommendations so far:
Average White Band
Commodores, The
Curtis Mayfield
Earth Wind and Fire
Eric Gales
Funkadelic
Graham Central Station
Herbie Hancock
James Brown
Janelle Monae
One Way
Parliament
Sly and the Family Stone
Stevie Wonder
Tower of Power

I agree with your statement about it all going wrong in the 80's. I do feel it's slowly gaining its roots again.

Stevie Wonder has some great stuff.  The song "He's Misstra Know It All" from Innervisions, a classic record, is just tremendous.

Checked out that one.  Don't see it come up in Stevie Wonder conversations.  I'm really into the relaxing and uplifting vibes that some of my favorite R&B songs provide.  A great break from too much metal.  That one has a good chill vibe to it.

Signed Sealed & Delivered and For Once in My Life are two of my favorites from Stevie.

This thread isn't complete without Tower Of Power. They have many classic tunes but I like their album T.O.P. (which is from 93) best.

Another one would be Maceo Parker, classic because he was in James Brown's band but most of his solo records are from the 90s and 00s. I especially like FunkOVERLOAD.
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

I always wanted to get into more music like this. I tried out Sly and the Family Stone a little while ago and it wasn't really my thing.

Kind of peripheral to the thread, but Chameleon is some fine shit.

Try Janelle Monae's The ArchAndroid - the best modern R&B. Such an eclectic and fun record.

Pretty much what Cyclopssss posted.

I love how they're playing here in Albuquerque for a thing called summerfest, it's all day with food, beer, entertainment and crafts. Best thing is it's free.

Just missed them over here because the carnival got cancelled. Was a free concert as well. If it would have happened the chances were good it would be the biggest crowd ever, def 10.000. Too late to get tickets for the night after in Amsterdam, so bummer.

Stepping out of the classic 70s era and onto a generation or two of influence results:

Eric Gales
Introduction song to the mainstream world tailored more to the rock world
Sign of the Storm

Modern guitar driven R&B
Paralyzed
Crystal Vision

Nice acoustic work
God Only Knows

A bit of funk infused while still escaping the funk label
So Good If You Could

Just plain fun
You Ugly

This guy did a great job of bringing in authentic past inspiration without making it sound old.  Love his work.  Like I said, not quite classic R&B / funk ... but offering a newer artist somewhat in the ballpark

Gotta give it up to James Brown's Big Payback.

I listen to the funk station on live365 while at work sometimes.  For me, it's cool to hear songs that rappers sampled later.

Janelle was on the Today show.  She really rocked it. Sad that she's not more famous.

Go-go is a popular music subgenre associated with funk that originated in the Washington, D.C., area during the mid-1960s to late-'70s.  It is a blend of funk, rhythm and blues, and early hip-hop, with a focus on lo-fi percussion instruments and funk-style jamming in place of dance tracks.

One of the big go-go bands is E.U.  They released a live album featuring a 19 minute medley.  While long prog songs have breaks or slower parts in it, there's no break in this one!  And after 18 minutes of playing, the drummer is still doing drum solos at the end!  Great stuff.
