Are the live entries from the official live albums allowed or should we stick to the studio versions of the songs?

Edit: Also sent round 6.

Songs from live albums are fine. You may want to consider the quality of the recording, though.

Most of you didn't take the opportunity to take additional time to select a song but a couple of you did, so you'll be waiting a few days before any impressions are posted.

I'm also rooting for Scorp to win a silver star. I don't need Rich getting another star if I want to win this. :lol

Round 6 results will be posted tomorrow, but here are your tidbits and personal rankings.

"What I didn't like...the vocalist is #1. He has an annoying nasal sound during the verses, and while he starts of alright at first in the chrous, his voice takes on a more grating whiney sound towards the end."

"I think my only real criticism is that the song easily could have been longer; it's eight an a half minutes and yet it somehow seems too short, it left me wanting more."

"The instrumentation is kept simple, with the song being driven mostly by the vocals and piano, with the addition of a bass and some electronic beats."

"The vocalist was annoying a lot of the time but decent at others, though never approaching a performance that stands out in a positive way. There were a few scat parts here and there, some of which I found annoying."

"Things only get better as the song progresses and the dynamics build, and the introduction of a piano was inevitable (but welcomed)."

"The vocalist has a very alternative/grunge kind of singing style which isn't bad but doesn't resonate with me all that much. The song is on the repetitive side and all of the sections kind of blur together a bit, even the instrumental section after the second chorus doesn't offer much of anything in the way of change."

"Nice intro that wastes no time getting into the thick of things. The clean guitar sounds good here, and the distorted rhythm guitar isn't far behind. I like the alternating between riffing and the big chords, then leaving space for the clean guitar before starting up again. This technique along with the vocalist's singing style reminds me of Rush quite a bit."

"Anyway, while this wasn't a bad song by any means, it was fairly same-y and repetitive. The riff in the verses is okay, but nothing great and the chorus is quite dull. The instrumental section is one of the better parts of the song but still nothing all that special."

I thought the nasal vocalist was mine until I scrolled and saw I did alright in the rankings. I guess mine is this then:

Quote
"I think my only real criticism is that the song easily could have been longer; it's eight an a half minutes and yet it somehow seems too short, it left me wanting more."

Anyway, I definitely won the match-up. The only question now is: did I get my third gold star or not?

i still can't read Bolsters' taste at all honestly, I'm just gonna send something completely unlikely to win next round because it's the only territory I haven't really explored at all with my entries beside the obvious progressive metal territory  :lol

I think he just prefers straightforward, direct songs. And dislikes noise, and a bad production. That's why he disliked I Have Walked This Body  :lol

I expected everyone to have a hard time getting a grip on what appeals to me, even the guys who probably thought they had me figured out (I think Chad felt that way...at first :lol). Infact it's one of the reasons I took so long to sign up to do a roulette in the first place, because I knew that my roulette would likely be frustrating and demoralising for most of the people involved in it.

I mean, you say I like straightforward stuff and that's definitely true, but on the other hand some of the more bleak reviews I've given out in the roulette so far are to songs that were too straightforward - some straightforward tracks scored very well here but others were complete disasters. And it's not like there aren't a couple of unusual things in my library or that I am incapable of appreciating the unusual, but that doesn't mean everything that is unusual is going to appeal to me. I think the only rule to successfully sending me songs that I will like is that there are no rules to follow; Just throw shit and see what sticks. I'm pretty sure that's all Shadow Ninja did and he still managed to get four stars in five rounds.

I would say more keyboards / piano driven songs over the guitar driven ones, and if there's some unusual instrument like violin, cello or a flute / clarinet it's all for the best. At least that's what I figured.
