Your #1 Album from Your Favourite Bands...
« on: July 25, 2015, 03:07:17 PM »
In response to the other thread. Your favourite albums by your favourite bands.

U2 - The Joshua Tree

Green Day - Nimrod.  Love Dookie but Nimrod is just 18 tracks of pure awesome and songwriting skill,

REM - Toss up between Out Of Time and Automatic For The People. But I think the latter wins. Special mention to Document also.

Oasis - What's The Story Morning Glory.  Noel at the peak of his powers. Lost his Mojo soon after - only found it again recently for his two solo albums.

Dream Theater - Octavarium. A lovely mixed grill of what Dream Theater is about. Plus has their best song so far in the title track.

Mastodon - Crack The Skye. Extremely hard to pick a favourite as Leviathan on wards are all 5 stars albums.

Metallica - Master Of Puppets. Nuff said.

The National - Boxer. Greatest evolution in sound goes to these guys from Alligator to Boxer. Two fantastic albums-- but the maturity that appeared on Boxer makes it their best album, and my favorite album of all time.

BTBAM - Colors. Also the culmination of this band's sound for me.

Fair to Midland - Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True. One of the most creative bands ever. So disappointed they disbanded.

Mastodon - Crack the Skye. Same as you, Kotow, but I think CTS inches out Leviathan just a bit. Such an immersive album.

Fall of Efrafa - Elil. The best post-metal band who ever existed imo, whose trilogy of albums is just near perfect.

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights. What a phenomenal album with such great atmosphere. Shame they haven't captured the same feeling again, though they came really close with their newest album.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago. The most emotional album for me. It channels so many different facets of emotion, and really presents Vernon at his rawest, most real.

Haken - The Mountain. Everyone knows how much I love this album. A capella, beautiful melodies, crazy experimentation-- Haken's best yet.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada. Though technically an EP, this is still their strongest release for me. Passion in both songs, emotion at its highest, and such a bleak atmosphere overall.

Anathema - Weather Systems. Again, great emotion, great atmosphere, beautiful vocals,

August Burns Red - Found in Far Away Places. At the moment, I like this album more than Constellations, my fav by them. The experimentation is great and the passion is just so strong throughout the album.

Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight. The best post-breakup album out there. So emotional, so powerful, so real.

1. Dream Theater:  Images and Words.  The only album in my iTunes folder that I rated every song
as having four or five stars.  'Nuff said.  Just barely edges out SFAM.

2. Iron Maiden:  The Number Of The Beast.  The gold standard for traditional metal.  Just barely
edges out Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.

3. U2:  Achtung Baby.  The Joshua Tree, while sounding completely different, is a close second.

4. Nightwish:  Wishmaster (for studio albums); If live albums count, End Of An Era.  Great power
metal with a great female vocalist.  Oceanborn and Century Child are excellent too, as
is Imaginaerum, though the style was completely different by then.

5. The Tea Party:  Edges of Twilight.  Wolfking will vouch for this.  Great hard rock with a smattering
of Eastern influences. Differs greatly from and vastly superior to their later
                           electronic and acoustic-tinged albums.

6. Within Temptation:  The Unforgiving.  Their best album by a mile.  Sharon had perfected her "rock"
voice by this album and there's nothing hard to defend on it (unlike Hydra)
other than maybe Sinead.  Solid from beginning to end if you don't try too
hard to follow the concept and enjoy the songs as individual entities.

7. KISS:  Destroyer.  Good songwriting, at least for them, albeit with help from Bob Ezrin and others.
Their best production up till then.  The only album of theirs I can listen to from
beginning to end other than their "live" albums or any of their dozen or so
                                best of/greatest hits packages.

8. Queensryche:  Operation: Mindcrime.  Until SFAM, this was the best rock opera of all time (sorry,
                                                            The Who, Pink Floyd, etc.).

9.  Megadeth:  Youthanasia.  I know I'm in the minority, but I like their second mainstream album
slightly better than their first, mostly on the strength of Train of Conse-
quences and A Tout le Monde [the original, not the happy-sounding
Cristina Scabbia abomination (and I like Cristina Scabbia, though not
                                          so much her band)].

10.  Metallica:  Master of Puppets.  This album just did more for me than prog-favorite ...And Justice
For All and mainstream juggernaut The Black Album.  And you
can actually hear bass on it.

My favourite Dire Straits album is actually On Every Street. Might be an odd choice for some.

I forgot : Therapy? - Troublegum. An amazing album and one that they've equalled only a couple of times since 1994.

Fall of Efrafa - Elil. The best post-metal band who ever existed imo, whose trilogy of albums is just near perfect.

Huh. A band about Watership Down.

Interesting.
