David Maxim Micic - Bilo EP. His discography is virtually flawless, but his debut EP feels a bit immature and doesn't compare to the awesomeness he'd later reach.

Anathema - Serenades. Nope.

Ulver - Nattens Madrigal. Awful production, and lame songs.

Steven Wilson - The Raven that Refused to Sing (and other stories). Luminol and Drive home are great, and the self-titled song is among Steven's best creations ever, but what's in between I find pretty meh and pointless.

I hate Rust in Peace. Don't like a single song on that album. I prefer Risk or even their most recent album that was so bad I can't even name it.

You know, I haven't really listened to Megadeth in years, and I wouldn't be all too eager to go and listen to them right now, for the most part, except that I would gladly listen to Rust In Peace any day. An album that finds a way to make speed metal sung by Dave Mustaine sound quite melodic. It's a classic album that I would even recommend to someone with little interest in speed metal (as someone who currently has little interest in speed metal).

I honestly think RiP is overhyped....I can get that.  But to like Megadeth and "hate" RiP?   That's just insanity.

As a whole, I find the album to be flawed....but just Holy Wars alone is worth the price of admission.   That is EASILY in the 5 greatest thrash metal songs of all time.  Possibly even #1.

This. An album with How to Disappear, Idioteque, Everything in it's Right Place, National Anthem and Optimistic can't be the worst.

And Amnesiac is the worst Radiohead album.

I don't like it that much either but Pyramid Song alone is better than Pablo Honey.

I don't know, I can't explain it. Maybe I had something negative going on in my life when I was listening to the album. I have a strong dislike for the songs. Every single song has something in the back of my mind saying "this song would be really good if only this wasn't here, or that wasn't here." In general, I wish the album was more straight forward and less "progressive." The songs don't have a simple beat behind them like on a classic Metallica song, and the riffs are all over the place. I love progressive rock and metal, so I know this doesn't make any sense. I just wish the songs were more straight forward, and I wish Dave Mustaine wasn't the worst singer in popular music. I also hate Dave Mustaine's guitar tone.

This is the closest I've seen someone come to praising Lars Ulrich's drumming in a long time.

I like Lars' drumming in the studio. Metallica is a simple band and he fits their style. I think Rust in Peace might be okay with Lars' straight thrash beats instead of Nick's mid tempo beats. Lars bangs on the snare on every beat while Nick doesn't. I always have trouble explaining what I mean, but that's probably the best I can do.

James LaBrie - Mullmuzzler's Keep It To Yourself (haven't heard the 2nd)
Justin Timberlake - Justified
Metallica - ...And Justice For All

Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Rise Against - Endgame
Styx - Kilroy Was Here
Sum41 - All Killer No Filler
Switchfoot - The Legend of Chin
311 - Don't Tread On Me (probably tied with Soundsystem)
Transatlantic - SMPTe (still great)

I get what you mean. Nick Menza never seemed to do the classic thrash beat where the hi-hat or ride is played in straight eighth notes, the kick drum is on the down beat with a little double bass thrown in, and the snare is on the upbeat. Nick's drumming gives the illusion that the songs on Rust in Peace are slower than they actually are. Megadeth always felt like the least thrashy of the Big Four, and the drumming is a big part of that. Gar Samuelson is the only Megadeth drummer who played like a thrash drummer which is interesting considering he was a jazz drummer.

With all of that said, Rust in Peace is by far my favorite Megadeth album and probably one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, Hangar 18, Lucretia, Tornado of Souls, and Rust in Peace...Polaris are all top tier thrash songs that I can rank alongside songs like Slayer's Angel of Death and War Ensemble or Anthrax's Caught in a Mosh and In the End. The rest of the album complements those five songs perfectly. This is the Megadeth album where the ideas of all four band members seemed to come together perfectly. The reason the lineup of Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, Dave Ellefson, and Nick Menza is considered the classic Megadeth lineup is because of this album. It is truly the pinnacle of Megadeth's music.
People figured out that the white thing that comes out of cows' titties could be drunk, and the relation between sweet desires and women's bellies growing up for 9 months. It can't be THAT hard to figure out how a trumpet works.”

I think, as a non-thrash fan, that's a big part of what I like about Rust In Peace. What you said about Nick giving "the illusion that the songs on Rust in Peace are slower than they actually are" is spot on about one of the things I like about that album. It's a very fast album but it doesn't really feel like it's being intentionally done that way, which gets boring for me after a while.

Megadeth and Metallica are the only bands associated with thrash that I was ever into. I think you've given a pretty good description of what I like about Megadeth (in addition to the fact that they just seem to be way more melodic than other thrash bands). And then Metallica is hardly a thrash band in my opinion. Their debut is thrash, and there are songs on the next three albums that would qualify, but on the whole they are more straight away heavy metal than thrash.
And if spirit's a sign,

I chose the same bands as in the favorite albums thread, some of those records are really good, but still the "worst" of the respective bands:

THE GOOD:

Ayreon - Actual Fantasy
Dire Straits - On Every Street
Spock's Beard - Snow
Thunder - Shooting At The Sun
Toto - Tambu

THE BAD (or at least decent):

Alice in Chains - The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
Anthrax - Persistence Of Time
Dream Theater - When Dream And Day Unite
Ford, Robben - Supernatural
Genesis - From Genesis To Revlation
Journey - Generations
King's X - Black Like Sunday
Led Zeppelin - Coda
Level 42 - Guaranteed
Magnum - The Eleventh Hour
Megadeth - The World Needs A Hero
Morse, Neal - Testimony
Opeth - Heritage
Pain Of Salvation - BE
Pink Floyd    - Atom Heart Mother
Porcupine Tree - On The Sunday Of Life
Roth, David Lee - Diamond Dave
Satriani, Joe - Engines Of Creation
Savatage - Sirens
Tesla - Simplicity
Townsend, Devin - Ghost
Van Halen - Diver Down
Whitesnake - Slide It In
Yes - Open Your Eyes

& THE UGLY:

Iron Maiden - Virtual XI
Metallica - St. Anger
Queensryche - Tribe

Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

Thank you, you've been able to articulate my belief better than I ever have. I've felt this way for a long, long time but have never seen anyone else make this observation. For being the "upmost heaviest, upmost fastest state of the art speed metal band," Megadeth really wasn't that fast or that heavy. You're right that Gar played the most standard thrash beats of any Megadeth drummer, and its no coincidence that I love the first 2 records. PSBWB is one of my favorite thrash albums, and it fits my desired criteria of being a straight forward thrash metal album.

For the record, I honestly do love Megadeth. They did melodic, mid-tempo heavy metal better than anyone else. CTE, Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings are amazing.

Still can't stand RiP.

Yeah, I've been meaning to pick up the deluxe edition of WTF. Eventually I will. And I've just never understood the love for the White Album. I like most songs the Beatles put out, but not a lot of that album strikes me as good. While My Guitar is great... I like Dear Prudence and Blackbird. Not a fan of Helter Skelter, EGSTHEMAMM, Back in the USSR, Glass Onion... it's just filled with songs I don't care about. The later albums (Abbey Road, Let It Be) are much better than this (and are great in their own right), but I prefer the earlier stuff.

Alice In Chains - Alice In Chains

No.

Styx - Kilroy Was Here

Yes.

Mah list:

Frank Zappa/Mothers - aw geez... imma wiff it and say Thing Fish.
Genesis - Invisible Touch
Styx - Kilroy Was Here
Led Zeppelin - CODA
Pink Floyd - Division Bell
ELO - Discovery (I could have said Zoom, but besides Time... starting with Discovery is when ELO massively went downhill for me)
Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue (yeah, I went there - COME AT ME BRUUUHHHH)
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Floater - Wake
The Beatles - I'd actually have to say The White Album as well, even though there's some REALLY good songs on there. Too much filler though and Revolution #9? Yeah... no.
Yes - Big Generator (I know... Drama should be here but BG was a massive disappointment IMO)
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos (even though it has two of my favorites, TDEN and Repentence)
Opeth - Heritage
ZZ Top - anything past Eliminator
NIN - Year Zero (I rarely listen to this one, but the few listens I try to give it... it just bores me)
Tool - Undertow (and there's songs on there I LOVE)
A Perfect Circle - eMOTIVe

I generally hear positive things about Drama. Union would be my least favourite, blech.

EDIT: Actually scratch that. I almost forgot Open Your Eyes existed. I guess I tried to repress that from my memory.
