it's really hard to choose top 10 because lot of their songs are impressive :)

i think their good melodic songs for me are

-hollow years
-spirit carries on
-wither
-home
-another day
-endless sacrifice
-surrounded
-through her eyes
-octavarium

instrumental/technical songs:

enigma machine
glass prison
erotomania
dance of eternity
breaking all illusion
etc

even mike portnoy was left nothing changed.dramatic turn of events album is blow my mind too.

I have a list on here somewhere and I agonized over it, and I'm not doing that again.  I do know that Number One is "Cover My Eyes", and somewhere in there is "To Live Forever", "Fatal Tragedy", "I Walk Beside You" and "This Is The Life".

Liquiid Tension, technically awesome as it is, does not appeal to me at all.

before i usually play loud/intense music but  as we mature and lose the need for peer approval we become more inclined to unpretentious or  sophisticated music such as jazz and classical pieces :)

Actually, I think it's the other way around. When we mature it's when we do not feel the need to play such things, and we start to play what we actually LIKE. If I understood correctly what you meant.

are you pointing out that it is just a part of SDOIT? If so, I prefer to look at that separately, because there are some "songs" in it that I do not like so much....

Same here.
I don't look at SDOIT as "one" song. I see it as a song cycle similar to Porcupine Tree - The Incident, Meshuggah-Catch 33, or even A Mind Beside Itself.

I think it's totally fine for you to put Solitary Shell as it's own song because it is.

I won't defend my picks, since nobody else is defending theirs.

1. The Spirit Carries On
2. Metropolis Pt. 1
3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (the whole suite)
4. The Count of Tuscany
5. Forsaken
6. Take the Time
7. Learning to Live
8. Pull Me Under
9. The Root of All Evil
10. Space Dye Vest

Honorable Mention:  The remainder of Images and Words in its entirety (except Another Day); Caught In A Web, The Silent Man, Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, and Scarred; A Change of Seasons; Trial of Tears; most of the remainder of Scenes From A Memory; Blind Faith; As I Am, This Dying Soul and Endless Sacrifice, In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1 and The Dark Eternal Night; A Nightmare to Remember; Bridges in the Sky; The Enemy Inside and Illumination Theory.

Finally, if part of a suite is presented as its own track number on a CD, it should be able to count as a song for this exercise.  I only included all of Six Degrees because it is played live in its entirety (at least parts II. through VIII.), is presented as only one track on Score, and is brilliant from beginning to end.

Man, that's actually harder to chose than it seems.

Let's see... I know my top 2 are Hell's Kitchen and Learning to Live. I'm not sure which is number 1 and which is 2 though...

As for the others, here's a list of the songs that could potentially make my top ten:
The Killing Hand with young James on vocals
Take The Time and Wait for Sleep
The Mirror and Lifting Shadows of a Dream
Peruvian Skies
Home
The whole first CD of Six Degrees
Vacant and In the Name of God
Sacrificed Sons
A Nightmare to Remember
Bridges in the Sky
The Bigger Picture and Illumination Theory (mostly due to the first 2 movements)

Unfortunately, I really can't narrow it down more than that... let alone rank them :lol

No particular order. These are my favorite DT songs as of today, the list always keeps changing.

Octavarium
Blind Faith
A Change of Seasons
Voices
Learning to Live
Breaking all Illusions
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
Surrounded
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Under a Glass Moon

Yes, that would make it 11. I just think it would be a crime to leave any of these out of the list.

Six Degrees is one song, so no justification necessary. :tup

I think if you have a song that clearly is made of some shorter songs that has well defined beginnings and ends (which is not always the case in DT songs), for the purpose of this exercise you can name the whole or any piece of that. Why not?

In no particular order, here is where I stand at this moment:

Endless Sacrifice
Space Dye
Octavarium
Ministry Of Lost Souls
Scarred
Stream Of C.
6:00
Finally Free
Home
These Walls
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

My serious answer, from my top 50 thread a while back:

1. Breaking All Illusions
2. Octavarium
3. The Count of Tuscany
4. Learning to Live
5. Metropolis, Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
6. Trial of Tears
7. Far From Heaven
8. A Nightmare to Remember
9. In the Name of God
10. The Bigger Picture

This is probably still about what it would be today, though Wait for Sleep and Surrounded are knocking on the door.
And if spirit's a sign,
