The Ultimate I&W Live Album?
« on: June 20, 2015, 10:51:37 AM »
About to head out for a 90 minute trip or so, and I thought it would be fun to put together a playlist of I&W based off live versions of the songs for me to play in the car. Let's say you can only use one version of each song, what do you guys think would be the ultimate version of "I&W Live"? What do you think about this:

1. Pull Me Under - LAB
2. Another Day - LSFNY
3. Take the Time - OIALT
4. Surrounded - LATM
5. Metropolis - LALP
6. Under a Glass Moon - Score
7. Wait for Sleep - LALP
8. Learning to Live - LSFNY
:TOX: <-- My own emoticon!

1. Pull Me Under - LaB
2. Another Day - Happy Holidays (The emotion in James's voice give me chills every time...not a "flawless" performance but it is the most emotional
3. Take the Time - New York, NY 3/4/93 (Official bootleg)
4. Surrounded - LALP (Really gave me an appreciation for this song)
5. Metropolis - LSNY or WDADRU (LSNY is James's most passionate version of the song.  WDADRU is just plain cool though)
6. Under a Glass Moon - Live at the Marquee (The Score version with the clown music ruins the song for me)
7. Wait for Sleep - LALP
8. Learning to Live - Happy Holidays or New York, NY 3/4/93

I'd just stick on the 15th anniversary performance of the album personally.  Love listening to that.

1. Pull Me Under - LATM (The original line up performing the biggest hit)
2. Another Day - LSFNY (I love how JLB managed his voice, and also the appearance of Jay Beckinstein... from Spyro Gyra... Right?)
3. Take the Time - I'm between OIALT and LIT
4. Surrounded - I&W 15th anniversary
5. Metropolis - Score (IMHO the PERFECT version of this song)
6. Under a Glass Moon - Score (Smooth, nearly perfection!)
7. Wait for Sleep - LALP (STRINGS!!)
8. Learning to Live - LSFNY (Definitely best version ever)

I'd probably go with bootleg versions of most of the songs, just to create something different. So instead of listing specific live albums or even specific bootlegs, I'll just list tours they were featured on.

Metropolis '96 - Fix for 96 show (I'm starting with Metropolis because that was the song originally intended to open the album)
Another Day - Train of Thought tour (has extended keyboard solo at the end)
Take the Time - World Tourbulence (has the By-Tor/Working Man jam tacked on to the end)
Surrounded '07 - Chaos in Motion tour
Pull Me Under (warped version) - a show that has this version of the song
Under a Glass Moon - Music in Progress tour (song hasn't changed much live at all)
Wait for Sleep (full band version) - Images and Tour (included JP, JM and MP in the song, plus has a 1 to 1.5 minute piano intro)
Learning to Live '05 - 20th Anniversary tour (has different instrumental section, including teasers of Crossroads and La Villa Strangiato that they solo over)
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

This IS a good show, especially for showcasing JR doing the IAW material, and while some don't like that version of "Surrounded", I like it a lot.

I made myself a IAW Live album from the tracks off of the NYC 3/4/93 show, and it's a pretty sweet album. The performances are from the IAW Tour, so it is the band doing it in their prime, pre-vocal accident JLB, MP just going wild, audible JMX, and a raw JP ripping on the strings. And having the full performance with Kevin Moore is pretty sweet.
