Music from your country, in your language
« on: June 13, 2015, 04:23:37 PM »
I was just watching some prog metal in Spanish, and while I couldn't understand the lyrics at all it gave me this idea for a thread.  Post some music from your country, in your language. The band/artist are probably not known at all outside of your country, but music is meant to be heard, right?

I'll go first. This is for you heavy rockers out there, this is the Norwegian band Seigmen, performing the song "Döderlein". I don't really know what the song is about, the lyrics are kind of hard to "get". The chorus is "someone deserves a good death", whatever that's supposed to mean. Some say one of the band members were suffering from migraine and his doctor was called Döderlein, I don't know if that's true or not. A good tune anyways!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzZNRhtXdfc

Excited to see what this thread will bring!  :coolio

Language won't be an issue, but New Zealand music rarely breaks out. It's a weird exception when a NZ artist is actually known of in the outside world.

The default NZ rock band these days is Shihad. They're an interesting band in that they alternate between albums that are quite poppy and ones that are really hard rock. My favourite of theirs is Killjoy from 1995, one of their earliest albums, and probably still their heaviest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFqfTLtvRZw

My favourite NZ band is Fat Freddy's Drop, but they're not something many people here would like, I doubt. They're an absolute creative behemoth of a band. Drum and bass, reggae, funk, soul, rap - it's all in there in portions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IDeut3uLSk

^^ I know one band from New Zealand.  This band called Like a Storm.  Saw them opening for Alter Bridge.  They put a good set for 30 min.  Heard their new album,  Awaken the Fire.  I enjoyed it.

Speaking of NZ music, I know Ben from Purest Form. He's a good guy.

As far as music from my own country, there's a lot of it on the forum, but Utah is known for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, so there's something... right?
Perhaps you should ask bosk to reverse the "e" and "a" in the second half of your user name.

Fuseboxx is the most popular prog band here in the Philippines. Here is one of their best songs in Filipino, "Ulanarao" (fusion of the words for Rain and Sun):

Another, titled "Pagbalik" (Homecoming)

Well I'm Canadian, our stuff usually gets around. Not gonna be making any huge revelations to talk about Protest the Hero, Devin Townsend, Unexpect, Rush...I could go on.

While Unexpect are French they usually (or always? Not super familiar with most of their catalogue) sing in English. Not aware of any French-singing bands off the top of my head, though I'm sure they're out there.

...my name is Araragi.

CMX is a Finnish prog/art rock band and they have done pretty much everything: hardcore punk, alternative, prog, metal, pop, folk rock, industrial... They have played a few shows outside of Finland, but barely anyone knows them abroad, although they're a cult band here and have been awarded a dozen gold records and a few platinum records. However, A.W. Yrjänä's cryptic lyrics are a pretty big part of their music, so I guess it may be difficult to get into them if you don't understand Finnish.

The most acclaimed CMX album is Aura from 1994, and it includes their greatest hit, Ruoste (Rust), which is an acoustic ballad with strings that continues to get radio airplay to this day in Finland.

Faith No More bassist Billy Gould produced their seventh album Vainajala in 1998, here's a song from it: Ei yksikään (No One) (reportedly the song got the nickname Hey Mexican from the way Gould tried to pronounce the title :lol)

Aion from 2003 is a thematic album about evil, and it's got some pretty experimental stuff on it, such as the backmasked guitars on Melankolia (Melancholy).

In 2007 CMX released a sci-fi concept album called Talvikuningas (The Winter King), which is probably the closest they ever got to prog metal - there are heavy Tool and Rush influences on that record. They made a cool animated video clip for Punainen komentaja (The Red Commander).

The latest album Mesmeria came out earlier this year, here's the lead single Rakkaudessa ja sodassa (In Love and War). I'll write a review for that record next week and update this post with it. EDIT: Here it is!

Sorry if I overwhelmed you guys with all those links, but it's hard to sum up their sound with just one or two songs! Almost all of their discography is on Spotify, so you can check out more of their songs there.

So much amazing music in this thread! I've had a blast listening to a lot of this stuff - thanks for all your suggestions! Omega and CMX are my favorites so far.

I'll keep the ball rolling with some more Norwegian stuff. This is folk rockers Gåte, blending traditional folk tunes with rock and electronica elements. Being old traditional songs and poems, lyrics are being sung in old rural Norwegian dialects.

I like this  thread. Let's go with a couple different thing from Argentina.

This is a hard rock tune from a guy that was friends with BB King and played with him

Pappo's Blues - Sucio y desprolijo

This one's from a guy who is considered by a lot of people to be the best Rock Musician from our country. He had an extensive career and played a wide variety of music.

Spinetta Jade - Digital Ayatollah

Lastly, going with something more recent, some post rock

Autumn Moonlight - Outer Sunset

I won't do that to you guys, it's totally embarracing.

Thing that comes closest to what you guys MIGHT like is a band called Vandale, off course inspired by Van Halen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5fT07oJ9DQ (not even going to bother translating this one, something about goatwoolsockrockers, i.e. hippies)

And the language is off course, Dutch (which is NOT German)

Italy has a prog history with bands such as

PFM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzbDUbu1lMM
Area: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj1P7S47eZQ
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF0MQ339Imc

and others such as Biglietto Dell'Inferno

-- sadly, italian music nowadays is pretty much dead. Everything has been eaten up by commercial mainstream pop and talent shows - except for of course the metal scene, which are all bands that sing in english (except for a few Rhapsody Of Fire songs) . A few artists still do decent music: one above all is Caparezza, a guy that does rap, but does every genre possible really. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x3MIHWLneo

I love folk rock/metal, maybe some of you do too? This is the band Glittertind (named after a Norwegian mountain), originally a one-man punk-folk-ish project, which later has evolved into a full band with a more subtle expression.

Older tune: "Glittertind"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVZ0BJYi_TU

Newer tune: "Kvilelaus" (= "Restless")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ur83As8378

And something completely different: let me present the band Skambankt (= "Beaten to a pulp"). The chorus has some real classy lyrics; "here you have my finger, the middle one is all yours"  :lol

Stam1na is a Finnish band who play some kind of progressive thrash metal, though it's really hard to put these guys into one genre. They are one of the most clever, interesting and consistently good bands I know. Their riffs are just so... fun! I don't know how else to put it.

The band has released six albums, of which the sophomore effort Uudet Kymmenen Käskyä (New Ten Commandments) and the fourth one Viimeinen Atlantis (The Last Atlantis) are generally the most acclaimed ones. They also happen to be my favorite records of Stam1na, though all their stuff is really awesome. I think they have not released even one bad song so far, that's saying something.

The lyrics are naturally all in Finnish, but I really wish you all could understand them. I rarely pay attention to lyrics at all, but the ones written by Stam1na's frontman Antti "Hyrde" Hyyrynen are just so twisted (not in a creepy kind of way), interesting and clever that even I get tremendous joy out of them. Finnish lyrics are generally pretty bad I think but this band proves the power of words when done right.

Here is Merestä Maalle (From Sea To Land) off of Uudet Kymmenen Käskyä. A more groovy track with awesome rhythmic guitar work and trademark vocals from Hyyrynen.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rALO8DFqOWE

And here Rikkipää (something like Sulfur Head) from Viimeinen Atlantis. A thrashy song with some more epic elements thrown in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCKYEQcqJOg

Seriously, check out this band! I guarantee you have not heard music like this before.
