Round 3: Strange round - The Results
This round was very interesting, and freaking fun. Oh, the fun I had listening to this songs, you have no idea. Each song is memorable for its own characteristics, and it was very varied also in sound. The chaaart:
FIRST PLACE: Elite, with "Ars Moriendi" by Mr. Bungle
Look dude, you're first! You've made it! Told you you had potential. Indeed, I expected Mr. Bungle in this round, as it is a band/project that I hear a lot about on Facebook/Plug DJ sessions, but never eventually given them a fair chance. Turns out that this song is freaking insane. It's quirky, eclectic, goes all over the place in merely 4 minutes, but manages to stay cohesive in its numerous ever-shifting sections. It's practically a fast folk song with dance, metal and god knows what else quick bursts, that make it interesting. Another cool thing is the vocals, Mike Patton sounds really goofy and " fat " in a sense.
9.5 pointsSECOND PLACE: Sacul, with "Mbinguni Amina" by David Maxim Micic
Sacul sent me this song from an artist that he
never sends in roulettes ever. But this time he sent another song, not Where Is Now
- Even if I prefer that to this song, I think this was the perfect fit for this round as it is proggy and djenty, but with folk and operatic influences, and lyrics sung in some sort of unknown language (it's not serbian, I've looked it up), with a slightly creepy atmosphere. But it's so fun and catchy, and pretty addicting too, like the rest of the stuff I've heard from David, either from his solo or from Destiny Potato. Really really cool turn on djent, a "style" that would be pretty repetitive if used wrongly, IMO.
9 pointsTHIRD PLACE: Evermind, with "Brass Goggles" by Steam Powered Giraffe
As soon as I read the name of this band I was like "STEAMPUNKSTEAMPUNKSTEAMPUNK" - turns out I was right. Indeed, Steam Powered Giraffe are a band with steampunk imagery, and god knows how much I love that style. So, you were pretty lucky with that, Evermind. Add a really cool bluesy/ragtime song about a robot trying to be human, with "La-da-dadada"s and layered barber-shop-quartet-style vocals, this was an instant win. Once again, really fun song, and I feel like I'm gonna play this on guitar to death.
8.5 pointsFOURTH PLACE: Nekov, with "Dr. Fluffels" by Electrocution 250
Oooh man, Peter Wildoer plays in this. He's such a cool drummer and person. Yeah, so, reading on Wikipedia, this band attempts to write "cartoon music" with extreme prog metal influences. And that's exactly what Dr. Fluffels is. A beastly instrumental, with a djenty base and lots and lots of solos (even a drum solo
), but featuring that kind of cartoony and familyfriendly-wii-videogame-soundtrack vibe that adds that wackiness to it, and works pretty well. The only thing is that this was not as weird as I thought it was gonna be, but still, it's a real good composition, so that's enough for me
8 pointsFIFTH PLACE: ShadowNinja, with "A Tapdancer's Dilemma" by Diablo Swing Orchestra
I was familiar with DSO's type of sound, they're pretty famous for that. This song was OK, fun, but with a creepy turn on the lyrics, even though the vocals are funny enough. But it lacked a bit of the fun that the songs above it have, IMO. But still, it's pretty good.
7.5 pointsSIXTH PLACE: Sneakyblueberry, with "Clara" by Scott Walker
This song scared me because of its length at first, then I proceeded to listen to it, and last night I had nightmares. Thanks Sneaky!
Seriously though, this song might be the creepiest song I've ever heard - It has almost no instruments. It's all scary sounds and electronics, with eventually those creepy violin bursts and vocals. The vocals sound really desperate, and remind me of Lou Reed. From what I've gathered, it's about Mussolini's wife, but I have no Idea, still - the lyrics also contribute the creepiness
A man came up towards the body
and poked it with a stick
It rocked stiffly
and twisted around at the end of the rope - gaah, shivers everytime.
I mean, it was a nice and very different entry, but I wouldn't come back to it ever in history, sorry
7 pointsSEVENTH PLACE: Scorpion, with "Silent Film" by Dog Fashion Disco
This was another ok track, which tricks you: at first it sounds pretty normal, yeah a bit eccentric but normal - but towards the end it goes completely nuts, with quick riffs and stops with "oohhs" and "aahs" and "I was just kidding" and all sorts of stuff that made me laugh a lot
Interesting song, but didn't grab my attention enough.
6 pointsLAST PLACE: WebRaider, with "Through The Ticket... Across Endless Mountains" by Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
Ouch. After two first places in a row, you've fallen pretty down below, WebRaider. Sorry to say but this song was just regular, didn't find any kind of "Strangeness" to it, and it felt pretty stale nevertheless. Just some regular metalcore, with a slight prog influence - but as I said, it didn't catch my interest at all, sorry

Evermind, remember that the next open round is your round, just don't say the theme yet! This is just to remind you.
