Favorite JP wah-drenched solo
« on: June 02, 2015, 06:40:21 PM »
Ok all, so after listening to Peruvian Skies, I remembered how much I love that solo.

I am probably going to miss a bunch, so say them so I can add them.

This poll is about your favorite JP solo that has the wah engaged for most of the solo. So things like A Rite Of Passage has a wah part, but isn't for the majority.

Neither 6:00 nor LaB Hollow Years is on the list, so I will have to go with Voices.
Only a prog fan would try to measure how much they enjoy a song by an equation. :lol

Voices will probably have to take it

But I have an unnatural love for the guitar solos in Beyond This Life (especially the one in the instrumental break)

Gotta go with the Voices outro. So much expression that really accentuates the phrasing. Plus, it was recorded with his Ibanez which I think really made his fast runs pop with every nuance.

Beyond This Life. Voices and Peruvian Skies also have killer wah solos, but I give the slight edge to BTL. It has a better groove underneath it, and I like that rock style a little more.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I love wah-wah, so I'm partial to any solo that features it. I'm goin with BTL, just look at JP's face when he plays it live in Budokan. Peruvian Skies is also fantastic. Among the solos you missed, I really like the first short solo in A Nightmare to Remember.

Good call. I absolutely love that one in ANTR. So rockin'! :metal

Beyond This Life.

I might add that JR's solo just before it is one of my favorites of his too.

I really love that BTL solo, but I went with Wither because it was the first thing that came to mind, and I like the double-tracked sound of that solo.

I voted Voices on instinct, but that BTL solo is killer.

Voices. PS and ANTR probably the next two. Actually not a big fan of the BTL one, though Jordan's solo there is one of his best.
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

Kirk is the reason why I prefer not much wah, if at all on solos. Until I heard JP, I thought most solos were crazy noises and wahs.

Broken record here, but voices - not just the solo, but the lead into the solo...it's such an epic part of the song with him front and center - he delivered. The solo in BTL has some real sick parts to it, but its harder to stand out when sandwiched between two very cool JR solos, the zappa part, the wayward son riff, and the great unison leading into the final chorus.  Damn - what a cool instrumental section.

I want to say Beyond this Life, and I actually like a lot of the solos on that list, especially Peruvian Skies, but I came here to say Voices. One of JPs finest moments (although BTL is not far behind).

I'm one of the few I reckon where the Voices solo doesn't really vibe with me. The song does, and I feel it's pretty much a signature solo. I just take PS and BTL over it.

This one. But I don't like wah in my face, it gets in my mustache. I usually make them wah in the toilet. Like Kirk Hammett.

Illumination Theory should be on here. The last guitar solo in The Pursuit Of Truth is one of the best on the album imo, he makes some killer sounds and techniques on that one
