Status Seeker (still pretty good)
Under a Glass Moon (still awesome)
Lie (still awesome)
You Not Me (not good)
Regression (by default)
The Great Debate (good song, with some killer parts, but just lacks that extra little something)
This Dying Soul (has some great parts, but some meh parts as well)
Never Enough (the Muse riff is good, but the lyrics really ruin this)
Constant Motion (good riff and great JP solo are ruined by embarrassingly bad vocal melodies...FOREVER MORE! INTO THE NIGHT BLISTERING!...so bad)
A Rite of Passage (not bad, just kind of bland)
On the Backs of Angels (very vanilla)
False Awakening Suite (enjoyable on a cheeseball level, but one of their lesser instrumentals)

Jammin, I know you won't mind my asking, I'm genuinely curious (lyrics do matter, after all)...I couldn't help notice many of your pics are songs which deal with the theme of God, religious ethics, or spirituality. Has that influenced your decision, or is it purely on musical grounds you list them as your least favourites (it's just that I don't think I've ever seen anyone say In The Name of God is their least favourite, or On The Backs of Angels, or Surrender to Reason...)

Interesting.  I hadn't caught that.   It's ironic actually, because with In the Name of God in particular, I happen to be 100% on board with the lyrics.  In fact, ITNOG may be among my all time favorite lyrics by DT.   But honestly, the riff just didn't hit me the way that others did.   The other two you mentioned are ones where the lyrics are not as familiar to me....and actually, the two most recent albums are among the hardest to choose.  Because even if I just consider them mid-tier albums, they are shockingly consistent albums.  There's honestly not a single dud that stands out on the entire thing, so choosing one is rather difficult.  So on those last two, it is really just a matter of really liking the songs a lot, but not quite as much as the rest.     ITNOG falls into the same category as Home...it's revered as a classic, and I just don't get it at all.   I guess both of those songs just kinda bore me.

When Dream and Day Unite: The Ones Who Help To Set the Sun
Images and Words: Another Day
Awake: 6:00
Falling Into Infinity: Burning My Soul
Scenes from a Memory: Through My Words
Six Degrees: The Great Debate
Train of Thought: Endless Sacrifice
Octavarium: The Answer Lies Within
Systematic Chaos: Repentance
Black Clouds and Silver Linings: The Best of Times
A Dramatic Turn of Events: Build Me Up, Break Me Down
Dream Theater: The Bigger Picture

For me, the hardest album to choose from is Train of Thought.  With most of their albums, it's pretty easy for me to break the songs up into tiers and pick a least favorite, even if I like all the songs on the album.  But I've always found Train of Thought really consistent.  It doesn't have any real weak points for me.  I picked Endless Sacrifice as the 'worst', but it was pretty much a dice roll.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

Remember that in some cases, you're confusing "worst" with "least best"..

EDIT:  Also don't forget that in a later post, I amended my Awake choice.   Lie is the replacement for IF.

BCASL - TSF - It works ok enough in the context of the whole 12SS, but it's mostly just a medley of much better songs.

Tired of seeing this incorrect argument against TSF, I decided to listen the song with a chronometer and this was the result: 5:18 of medley parts and 7:31 of new material.. So it's not "mostly" a medley of other songs, it's less a medley (or "frankenstein", as some like to say) than a regular song..

Octavarium: Full Circle.  I love every song but 8V is almost unlistenable because of this one part.  I need to make an edit without Full Circle.

WTF!.. That's one of DT's best moments IMO.. W-T-F..

Anyway, I do that kind of things.. I mean, to make ''special'' editions of songs.. I edited the two songs of Haken with growling vocals, i. e..  ;D

Your idea of new material must be more generous than mine, because from a quick skim I found about 3 minutes of material that wasn't derivative of earlier songs in a significant way, including the fade-in intro that accounts for half of that. That's a majority of the song.

But even by your own measure that is meant to defend the song, that's over 40% reused material. That's almost half. That is not less medley than a regular song. Most songs are 0% medley...

The rest of the suite is significantly less, usually just one or two connections. The first time I heard TDS, I didn't even know it was connected to TGP until over half way in when it reprised the heavy B riff (over 6 minutes in). TROAE has a one minute intro based on one reused riff from TDS (which makes sense as it's a bridge between the two songs), then has the reused chorus that goes for about half a minute. Repentance's main riff is a clean version of a riff from TDS, but is otherwise basically new.

TSF is a pretty cool standalone song and... well, idk why is that one placed as the least best but not Repentance from SC

The intro?.. In which previous song is that part?..

But even by your own measure that is meant to defend the song, that's over 40% reused material. That's almost half. That is not less medley than a regular song. Most songs are 0% medley...

Maybe I express myself wrong.. I meant to say that there's more new material than medley parts in the song.. Yeah, obviously, is the 'most medley' song I know (a studio version song)..

TROAE has a one minute intro based on one reused riff from TDS (which makes sense as it's a bridge between the two songs), then has the reused chorus that goes for about half a minute.

And also the outro, with one of Octavarium's main melodies..

I mean the intro is part of the original material, not the other way around. Pardon my cruddy wording! I wasn't counting the Octavarium melody, since that's not a part of the 12SS. :tup

After reading the forum for months and signing up for it weeks ago, I thought now would be a good time to make my first post.

WD&DU:  can't make a selection, because I've only listened to it all the way through a couple of times.
I&W:  Another Day (not a bad song per se, but just the wimpiest on the album.)
A:  The Mirror
FII:  Anna Lee
SFAM:  The Dance of Eternity (too much musical masturbation.)
SD:  Disappear
TOT:  Vacant
O:  Octavarium (my least favorite of all of their epics.)
SC:  Repentance
BC&SL:  The Best of Times
ADTOE:  On the Backs of Angels (how this was Grammy nominated is beyond me, when they've literally had dozens of better songs.)
DT:  Don't care for any of The Bigger Picture, Behind the Veil, or Surrender to Reason.

So there you go.  I'm looking forward to conversing with some of you from here on out.

Honestly, there's not a DT song I don't like. I definitely know some of my least favorites, but there isn't a single song in their discography that I can say sucks. But, if I had to pick my least favorite of each album:

WDADU: Status Seeker
I&W: Another Day
Awake: Innocence Faded
FII: New Millennium
SFaM: Through My Words, by default.
Six Degrees: War Inside My Head (I can't pick any of the 6 songs, so I picked my least favorite part of SDoIT)
ToT: Stream of Consciousness
Octavarium: The Answer Lies Within
SC: Repentance
BC&SL: A Rite of Passage (least favorite DT song overall. It's super generic to me.)
ADToE: Build Me Up, Break Me Down
DT12: Along For the Ride
