I don't understand how anyone can't appreciate what George Miller did here, but hey, to each there own!

It's winning Best Picture for nearly every movie awards out there, and it's surely going to be nominated for the Academy Award.

I wouldn't say it's a sure bet that it will be nominated for an academy award, I think it depends on how many they decide to nominate this year. If it's only 5 movies, I don't think it will be on there, but if they go up to 10, it has good chances.

It's not usually the type of movie that gets nominated though. If it gets nominated I'd be surprised. Happy, but surprised.

And it leads The Oscars in nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director  :metal :metal :metal

EDIT: I miscounted. The Revenant has 12, Mad Max has 10.

I saw that as well. Though I really wished it was also nominated in the best music category. The music is absolutely fitting and makes a huge contribution to the intensity of several scenes

I'm very happy this movie is getting the recognition it deserves, even if it doesn't win any of those categories. The academy got it right.

Just watched this on HBO for the first time.  Yeah, I regret not seeing this one in theaters. Never saw any of the old films, but this one was pretty awesome. Stunning visuals to say the least. Awesome score as well.

Watched this on HBO yesterday as well.

I really liked this movie with one exception... That fucking guitar player and drummer truck. I get that in war music can amp up the troops, but let's be real, no one in any of those vehicles would have been able to hear that music. I was on the edge of my seat during every actions sequence, and when they would show the guitar player, I'd die a little inside.

I don't think the movie was a game changer, but it was still enjoyable. Also, there was a monster truck which is pretty much my favorite thing. So it gets a plus there. I'd give it a solid 8.4/10

Guitar guy was an instant icon. They had the music absolutely cranked to the point it could seemingly be heard for miles. Could they have heard it over those monstrous vehicles? Was there any reason to waste an entire huge vehicle and all that fuel and manpower just to make lots of noise and flames?
I don't know the answer to any of this, but the important part is that it looked damn cool.

Watched it tonight on HBO like a few others here. Really solid movie although I couldn't help but think how much Tom Hardy looked like Tim Tebow during the entire movie. Weird thought but it just kept popping up especially when all he was doing was looking around and not saying anything.

Just posted this in the just watched thread but I'll post it here as well.

We finally got around to watching Mad Max: Fury Road. I thought it was absolutely terrible. Yes the action scenes were impressive but I found the story and the acting to be terrible. Most over hyped movie I've seen in a long time. To be fair I think the original trilogy is overrated as well.

But the point of the movie is the action and that's why it's praised, not because of the story or acting.

I have a funny feeling if you asked the folks who choose Oscar nominations why they picked Mad Max, they wouldn't say, "the action. Everything else about it was shit. All we cared about was the action. The action alone got it its nomination."

Having said that, they were obviously tuning out some fucking atrocious acting and dialogue, so maybe you're right.

I really didn't get why this movie is so great either. Sure it was very enjoyable but not a fantastic movie (but I have to say that I am not a big fan of action movies in general). The setting and look are really well done but it's not a movie that makes you think or something.

But I guess the point is just to provide a very enjoyable setting and some action? Cause it did succeed in that.

I don't think every movie needs a good story or the best acting in the business. Movies are made to entertain by any means necessary, not set out to move you and impact your life in someway. That's my opinion at least.

You say that like it's a testament to the strength of the film. The fact that Mad Max is considered one of the best movies of the year, one of the best examples that the art form had to offer, just reinforces what a shitty, lowest common denominator joke of an art form film is.

I had no problem with the acting. It was perfectly fine and I wouldn't at all say it was "atrocious". And no problem with the story either. It was simple, sure, but not bad.

The reason I liked Mad Max so much is because I had fun watching it, and I really don't give a shit about what it might have done wrong at that point. I'm not a critic, I don't need to. If I want something more artsy I'll watch The Revenant again.

If an album with an overall tone and atmosphere as corny, ham-fisted and contrived as Mad Max got universal praise, then Dragonforce would be a much more appreciated band.

But funnily enough, that isn't the case.

Ok, but there's no need to overreact (about the films being a joke art form). For every Die Hards, Terminators and Mad Max, there is our Godfathers, Seven Samurais and Space Odysseys (not that i believe in that but just to appase you).

Fluffy, the overall aesthetic of the film is why it's universally praised. This post-apocalyptic world that George Miller created over 35 years ago is weird, strange, and off the wall. He continued that feel and tone with Fury Road, but just absolutely upped the stakes. It's not just his direction, it's not just the action, or the acting, it's the editing, it's the camera work, the music, the writing, the stunts, the practicality, the production design, the production VALUE that makes the movie one of the aesthetically pleasing movies of recent memory. For a movie of it's magnitude, the message is pretty deep. The progressive storytelling weaving in it's themes and motifs are brilliantly done. It truly is one of the best films of the year, and deserves every recognition it is getting.

So the girl and I had a Mad Max marathon the past few days since she never seen the first three films, and I never really realized this until now that in every Mad Max film, the world's infrastructure slowly crumbles and dissolves into a desert wasteland after each movie. People get weirder, more dangerous, and clothes become tattered pieces of leather. The nice paint jobs on the cars in the first Mad Max are reduced to rust. I don't know if this was an artistic choice made by Miller, but it really resonates with overall post-apocalyptic/environmental theme of the franchise

Mad Max has won at least 4 so far.

Anyone watching?   I'm surprised it doesn't have its own thread.

I counted six, all technical awards for editing, plus costume and makeup.
