hmm... 3 of the artists I submitted I discovered on one site, one other I saw at a music store and looked them up bcuz of the album name/cover, another I'd heard of waaay before I got into prog and checked out their stuff when I heard they had proggier stuff than I'd heard, and one other was an artist I'd heard as background music in a video on another site I used to frequent

completely unintentional but every artist in my EP is an artist I -didn't- find on DTF, lol...

Sounds like Genesis!  ;D

I had only ever done this with Nightwish. The Once album cover made me want to get it. Looking at the back I saw the female (who I assumed was the) singer, and I was intrigued. So glad I ended up getting that because Once and DPP made my LIFE around that time (2006-2008)
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

i'm gonna be honest, I listen to basically no band from before the 90's
i'll listen to some Pink Floyd, and DT technically started in the 80's but all their good stuff was 91' onward, and I have like one 80's Fates Warning album I don't like much

i haven't really ever listened to Genesis  :lol

i will also be honest, i find it hard to listen to anything from either the 60's or the 80's 'cause the production in both those eras generally sucked
I dunno why we got decent production in the 70's and then lost it again until the 90's

Hey, 60s - 80s interval does include 70s, so don't worry. Not that it's the kind of music you will like though.

It's going pretty well! It's a bit of slow going again, like the epic round, as you can imagine. Hopefully it won't be quite as slow as that one was, though, because listening to a set of songs that total 30 minutes is usually less draining than listening to a 30-minute song. At least it is for me.

I've just finished the last EP of my first run-through, so I've listened to all of them once. I'll begin the second listen tomorrow. I don't know if I'll ever post first impression quotes from this round, because any quote about the whole EP would be really obvious for most of them and any quote about a particular song would often not be that telling because it's just one song of several (or even many). But I will give a general description about my thoughts after one listen.

To briefly sing my own praises: I think it was really good that I did this EP round. I'm not sure if I'm the first one to do this in a roulette, so if I'm not, then whoever came up with it came up with a really good idea, and if I am, then I guess I came up with a really good idea. It's been really interesting to just see how everyone used the space allowed by the two rules I gave you (less than 30 minutes of music, no more than 15 minutes per band) to come up with different samplings of songs. Some people went with a particular mood or style of music and gave me an EP that consists mostly or entirely of that style, which is probably a more effective way of getting me to check out the particular style than just sending one song from one artist. Several EPs really focus in on particular styles of music that I wasn't that familiar with coming in, and I'm enjoying wading in to the examples they've provided to get to know that style. Others focused on a style that I already know in an attempt to get me into some artists in that style that I don't know. And then there are some that offer a wide stylistic variety that often seems to still work in the 30-minute playlist format.

All this to say that one listen in, I don't regret doing the EP round (like I thought I might). Scoring might be a little bit more of a challenge this time, and I realize that the stakes couldn't be higher here than at any other point in the roulette, but just in the interest of being a music listener who is trying to sample a number of different styles, I really like the way this round is turning out.

Second listen starts tomorrow! :) I'll keep you all updated on this process, which hopefully won't take quite as long as the epic round did. And, also, I'll be making a "what I learned running this roulette" post in the not-to-distant future, so that will be coming as well.

Oh, one other little tease: Two artists were included on two different people's EPs. And one person sent both artists (in case that wasn't clear, it was like Person B sent an artist that Person A sent, and Person C sent a different artist that Person A also sent).
And if spirit's a sign,
Then it's only a matter of time

For you and Shadow Ninja, right now.

Scorpion: 0/20, hates Song of Myself
Shadow Ninja: 0/20, hates Song of Myself

 :P

Nah, seriously. I've listened to every EP twice, which was quicker than the epic round to get to this point. That's the good news. The bad news is that I really feel like I need a total of four listens to be able to score these properly. Then more good news is that starting today I'm going to try to listen to five a day. I'm not sure that will happen every single day, but I would say results this weekend.

Man, Song of Myself just fucking sucks. The first half is just good, not great, and the trainwreck of shit that is the second half just completely ruins any chance it ever had of being considered a good song.

Spoken word bits can be done well, and can ever be great, like Ulver's Stone Angels. That one is 15 minutes, and there's nothing other than spoken word and backing instrumentation.

But goddamn, Song of Myself sucks hard. Even more so when you compare it with the brilliant epic on the previous album, which is one of Nightwish's best songs, in my opinion.

...

uh

Anyway I hope you enjoy my EP. :lol

Just wrapped up the third listen. Fourth listen will include the writeups and will kick off tomorrow. I would estimate Sunday for when the results will be posted.

Here's a fun little tease to tide you over until then. I've ranked the songs on each EP, and I'm posting those rankings here without track names. Fortunately, there are multiple EPs with the same number of tracks, so the rankings aren't quite a giveaway (for example, there are two EPs with seven tracks, so the people who had seven tracks still won't be able to tell which of the two rankings is theirs). The only exceptions are that there is only one EP with three tracks and one EP with four tracks. So the ranking of the EP with three tracks has a decoy "Track 4" entry in the rankings.

Maybe this idea is a bit revealing about what I think of aspects of EPs, but there are people in other roulettes showing exactly where a submission ranks among that person's other submissions, so I think I'm fine. You still won't know how well I liked your EP as a whole.

Here are all the EP track rankings, with song names removed.

EP #1:
1. Track 2
2. Track 1
3. Track 3
4. Track 4

EP #2:
1. Track 2

5. Track 5

EP #5:
1. Track 1
2. Track 6
3. Track 4
4. Track 2
5. Track 5
6. Track 3

EP #6:
1. Track 1
2. Track 5
3. Track 3
4. Track 4
5. Track 6
6. Track 2

EP #7:
1. Track 3
2. Track 4

I bet the second one is mine. An absolutely outstanding epic song > a great epic song and awesome closer for the album > a nice sad ballad with male and female vocals > a pretty generic power metal song that makes for a quality opener.

Though it would be indeed weird if mine is the first one.

hmm how would I rate my EP's tracks

4 - fantastic piano and vocal piece with some electronic and symphonic flourishes
5 - probably my favorite power metal song and a good epic-ish track for a short EP
2 - an oddly bright rock song for the lyrics
3 - good ol' power ballads
6 - very emotional piano ballad closer, i cri everytim
1 - a very pleasant and quirky song

off the top of my head i guess, but all 6 songs are great. there's like, a super narrow gap between 4 and 1, they'd all rate at least 8.5 or higher on my grading scale  :lol
judging by your taste, im going to say EP #5 is probably mine  :lol

one draft of my EP actually had like 8 tracks but that was with two really short tracks in it and it didn't flow so well

hmmm... looking at the rankings, there's a 50/50 shot that you either loved or hated my opener haha. I'm going with that you LOVED it, and picking EP #6. It makes the most sense, to me anyway, that after the blistering hard rock/punk opener you would love the three ballady-type songs the most and put them 2-4. My closer is one of my favorites from a particular Classic Rock band, but I could see how it could be bland for someone (although.... DAT DRUM SOLO!). And the song you ranked 6th may just not be your cup of tea, although it's one of my favorites from a '90s band and is actually a very cool re-recording of a very old song of theirs.

All that is, of course, assuming I'm right and that EP #6 is mine. I just don't see the other rankings making sense lol. Maybe #7........ Maybe.
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.
