Nightwish Survivor - Oceanborn - Round 1

As I said earlier, we're gonna run two album survivors at the same time, so meet Oceanborn survivor right here!

This album is actually quite the opposite of Angels Fall First for me. I haven't listened to it for a while too; Angels Fall First turned out a lot better that I thought, and after those few listens before the survivor I think Oceanborn is kind of flat. There are no obvious bad songs for me, but there are no really obvious standouts either (even though I love a few tracks, and there's also Sleeping Sun, but that's a bonus track), so apparently voting in this one will be quite difficult for me. In fact, this album has that distinctive power metal sound despite the overly operatic vocals, and if there's one thing I don't want to hear in Nightwish, it's that power metal sound (I've got a lot of other bands for that.)

The album's cover is really great though. I like owls. Who doesn't like owls?

Anyway, I think I'll stick to my kind of strategy of voting the songs with male vocalists on it, because seriously, until Marco joined in for Century Child, Nightwish could never get them quite right (I admit Beauty and the Beast is kind of cool though.) Marco is all kinds of awesome, while Tapio Wilska (I even had to check out my Oceanborn booklet to get his name right! Guess I'm not that big Nightwish fan after all.) just doesn't do it for me.

Ended up voting for The Riddler, but many of the songs just blend together for me, and overall this is probably my least favourite Nightwish album. My favourite is probably Moondance, though I'm pretty sure that's a rather controversial pick

My second favourite album from the band.. That kind of sound they achieved I think it's unique.. Songs like Gethsemane, Sacrament of Wilderness, The Riddler, The Pharaoh Sails to Orion.. Amazing dark-power-symphonic songs...

Least favourite: Passion and the Opera and Devil... But while the latter has nice moments (and forgettable ones) the former it's regular (regularly not good), and that means it doesn't do anything for me..

Great album, I wish them to do something like it these days, though I know that's not likely at all..

I'm listening to Gethsemane now and it's perfectly synced with the boys in the car at the bottom of the page. 

This rawer sound is the stuff I'd prefer to hear Floor singing on tbh.

It's all good man, I'm dreading everyone's reactions when we'll get to Century Child. I'll be voting Bless the Child and Slaying the Dreamer right away.

Besides, I'm not that fond of that Pharaoh song too.

I went with Swanheart... as much as I love NW, their ballads have never been the greatest IMO and this is the lesser of the two on this album

Went with Walking in the Air, but every song on this album is 8/10 or higher for me.

Edit: And Evermind, why not do a tiebreaker vote between just the ones that are tied, if this holds?

I actually think now that if we get more than two songs tied, we should get a tiebreaker. Or we can just get rid of those three.
