Saw Hidden Figures yesterday and thought it was really good. That also means that I have finally seen all the movies that I anticipated would be contenders to go on my top 10 of 2016, so I can now actually post that top 10.

1. Lion
2. La La Land
3. Snowden
4. Arrival
5. Hacksaw Ridge
6. Captain America: Civil War
7. Swiss Army Man
8. The Nice Guys
9. Nocturnal Animals
10. Silence

I have one that I feel just has to get an honorable mention. I so much wanted to put The Neon Demon on my top 10, but just couldn't find a way around that there were 10 movies I liked better, so #11 it is.

I'll post my bottom 10 too, what the hell. I still have three movies from 2016 left to see but I'm pretty sure they won't end up in the bottom 10 anyways so it's a list unlikely to change at this point.

38. X-Men: Apocalypse
39. Deadpool
40. Blood Father
41. Warcraft: The Beginning
42. The Legend of Tarzan
43. Allegiant
44. Kung Fu Panda 3
45. Moana
46. Independence Day: Resurgence
47. Suicide Squad

I should say that I only actively dislike the bottom 2. I usually only take the time to see movies I genuinely hope I will like, and most times I'm right about that, meaning that my bottom 10 for any given year is mostly made up of movies I thought were alright. Like #38-#41 were pretty enjoyable movies. The quality goes a bit downhill from there but I don't hate #42-#45, I just thought they were pretty meh. 46 and 47 though... Just awful.

Arrival was really good but I thought the moral of the story was at odds with the denouement.

The entire theme of the movie is "communication is important" - yet when she 'communicated' to Jeremy Renner that their daughter will die - he left her...

I may be missing something but I didn't quite get it.

Jeremy renner asks "do you want have a baby?"

She should have said right there "if we do, then our baby will get sick and die one day. are you ok with that?"

Instead, She kept that from him. That's why he got pissed and left when she eventually told him. She did not find out after the birth. She knew before the birth. There was no communication. She's a succubus

Yes I know why...It's just that communication saved the day and also ruined her life too.

Suicide Squad

Not going to post in the DC movies thread, but it was entertaining enough to kill a few hours.  Enjoyed Will Smith and loved Harley Quinn's outfit.   :)

Other than that, I didn't get much else out of it.  Jared Leto had the impossible task of being the Joker after Heath Ledger, and I just wasn't that interested in his portrayal.  The few glimpses of Batman kicked ass though.

Last movie seen: The Last Temptation of Christ (go figure why). I personally didn't like it, sure it was masterfully shot but it was a bit too long and it was basically a retreading of the "classic" story of Jesus until the twist at the end.
It's actually an adaptation of the novel of the same name, written by Nikos Kazantzakis.

I prefer the alternate ending when Jesus starts singing Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

Probably not the right place to put this, but hey, whatever.

Great movie. I don't know many others who could have played Pacino's role as brilliantly as he did. Maybe someone like Gene Hackman. Someone who when the fire was lit in their eyes, you felt it. That whole scene in his office, when he's talking to Reeves, is an amazing piece of acting. I also think Keanu Reeves was an excellent choice.

Eh, while that is an enjoyable flick, that long scene near the end shows everything that went wrong with Pacino post-Scent of a Woman.  It's basically him screaming his head off for 20 minutes.  Pacino is still a god tier actor, merely on the strength of his work in the 70s, but he was a caricature of himself by the time he did Devil's Advocate.

At least he doesn't always take himself seriously.

Twenty minutes? Is there an extended version I don't know about?

I found TDA to be a mediocre film at best.

Of course, I had previously read the novel on which it was based, which I also found mediocre.

The novel didn't blow me away either. I don't think I would have enjoyed the film so much if Pacino didn't bring the character to life as much as he did.

IMO, both were top shelf in the 70s, but in the current day, De Niro can still give a good performance, but I don't think Pacino can.  He has descended into Oldman-esque levels of overacting.

Conversely, I think Oldman has gotten better in that department over the years.

I agree. De Niro does different things now, but he's still badass without overacting all the time.  Pacino's thing seems to be ranting and screaming a lot.  He's very good at it, but it gets pretty one-note.

Oldman has always been good, and yeah, he seems to be getting better.

In the Loop. By the author of Veep.

Another political satire, going back and forth between London and Washington, after seeing three seasons of Veep it's blatantly clear that the director (showrunner) is the same, but still it's damn funny. So many one liners full of swear words, cynical attitudes and royal mess-ups, it's one big comedy sketch after another. Brilliant!
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Heat from the mid 90s is a good example of how DeNiro stayed great much longer. Pacino is good in that film, but DeNiro is magnificent.

Memento: Rewatched it. Just as sublime as the first time  :hefdaddy . 5/5
Pink Floyd's The Wall: Pretty artsy but cool and well made. Sadly I'm not as much into the album. 3.5/5
Monty Phyton and the Holy Grail: Another rewatch. Basically just dumb, absurdist, English humour, but so good. 4.5/5
World of Tomorrow: Fuck, I love Hertzfeldt's shorts and work in general. This was pure brilliance and feels. 4.5/5

That was a tough choice for me. I always feel Pacino has been a much better actor but I usually root for the bad guys, so I was glad Pacino got the better of him but pissed the bad guy got caught.
