Maggie (2015 movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger)
« on: March 28, 2015, 03:21:35 AM »
I don't know if every movie like this warrants its own thread, but I saw the trailer and wanted to talk about it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ5Vz8qE8R8

When I first heard the premise of this, I thought it sounded kinda weird. But I just watched the trailer because hey, slow saturday, and I must say that this movie actually looks interesting. If the movie turns out to be bad, then at least it had a really well made trailer.

Thoughts?

Wow. That is a stunning trailer. Not normally into zombie movies, but this looks like it could be extremely cool.

I heard about this a while ago, because I know it was shot a while ago, and everyone was surprised because it isn't what you'd expect from a zombie movie with Arnie in it.

It always reminded me of the Simpsons bit with Rainier Wolfcastle, with his movie "My Son is a Nerd", and Kent Brockman says he's laughing already, and Rainier says "it's not a comedy". :lol

Not interested in seeing it at the cinema, but I want to check it out some time.

Looks like it could be Arnie's best movie since his comeback.

Has he done anything good since his return to acting? I haven't seen any of them, but he had that movie with Stallone, and that other one where he looked like Hitler for some reason, and Expendables.

I have decent expectations for Terminator Genisys. The terminator is the part he was born to play. A robot!

Escape Plan was great, but the plot was unfollowable.

The actual escape plan in Escape Plan was incredibly underwhelming. The first half of the movie goes to great lengths to convince the audience that Stallone is this great escape artist and the best in the world, so I thought escaping from this super high-tech prison would require something at least mildly complicated, something with finesse. But it boiled down to "run here, shoot some guys, get in the choppa".

As for The Expendables, I think they're all dreadfully boring. It would be an insult to one-dimensional characters to call the characters in The Expendables movies one-dimensional, there's far too many characters which is part of the problem because they aren't given enough screen time or dialogue to really be fleshed out. With the exception of maybe one scene per movie the action is just generic run-and-gun where the good guys spray bullets and kill dozens of bad guys, but the bad guys are incapable of hitting anything. The plots are equally generic and have the same "been there done that" feel that the action does. You might get a chuckle or two out of some of the oneliners, but for the mostpart they are borderline crungeworthy.

The problem with The Expendables is that Stallone has apparently no imagination whatsoever.

The first Expendables movie was pretty generic, but the second one was actually fun. It knew what it was and didn't so much like a try-hard. Chuck Norris telling Chuck Norris jokes, Arnold and Bruce Willis quoting each other's famous lines. Goofy as hell, but still fun. Haven't even seen the third one.

But yeah, from what I have seen and heard, Maggie looks to have potential to be his best since the come back.

Out of Arnold's post-governator movies so far, I'd probably rank them:

Escape Plan
The Last Stand
Expendables 3
Sabotage

None of them have been that great though. But the trailer for Maggie makes me happy. I love Arnold, and I hope this can be his big role. At least in the trailer, he gives the best dramatic performance he has ever given. I just hope it's like that in the whole movie.

Yeah seriously, in the trailer alone he's done more "proper acting" than in any film he's previously done. Very intriguing, looking forward to it!

Just saw this movie. Honestly, I thought it was great. Interesting drama, as well as some really well done and creepy imagery. The zombie father and daughter near the beginning was especially disturbing. Arnold did a really good job as well.

Obviously Arnie isn't an AcTOR...But I do think he'd be able to give a decent performance with the right material and a good director.

Indeed, and he does great work with the material he has here. Granted, he's not given super difficult stuff, no long monologues or stuff like that. But there's some serious emotions to get through and relationships he needs to help sell and I think he managed it.

My thoughts exactly. It was really great seeing Arnie in a role like this and as Jackie said, cool seeing 'Olive' grown up and she did awesome as well.
