The actual escape plan in Escape Plan was incredibly underwhelming. The first half of the movie goes to great lengths to convince the audience that Stallone is this great escape artist and the best in the world, so I thought escaping from this super high-tech prison would require something at least mildly complicated, something with finesse. But it boiled down to "run here, shoot some guys, get in the choppa".
As for The Expendables, I think they're all dreadfully boring. It would be an insult to one-dimensional characters to call the characters in The Expendables movies one-dimensional, there's far too many characters which is part of the problem because they aren't given enough screen time or dialogue to really be fleshed out. With the exception of maybe one scene per movie the action is just generic run-and-gun where the good guys spray bullets and kill dozens of bad guys, but the bad guys are incapable of hitting anything. The plots are equally generic and have the same "been there done that" feel that the action does. You might get a chuckle or two out of some of the oneliners, but for the mostpart they are borderline crungeworthy.
The problem with The Expendables is that Stallone has apparently no imagination whatsoever.
