Worst Movies
« on: March 25, 2015, 08:11:46 AM »
In contrast to all the other threads were we mostly talk about the movies we like, why we like them and what makes them so special, I thought it could be an interesting idea to make a thread about movies that just doesn't work. Either "So Bad They're Good" Movies, like The Room or Troll 2 (just to give two examples), or other movies that are just plain awful for various reasons. What are your most miserable movies, or most entertaining ones for being bad across the board? :P

I'll get things going with two examples of mine:

Jaws - The Revenge
Where do you even start with this one? This has to be, not just one of the worst sequels of all time, but one of the worst movies of all time period. Like most people, I love the original. What Spielberg did was really special, and the impact that movie had was just very unique, and something that few movies accomplish. I also really like the second movie, which I know gets some hate, but IMO it's a good sequel. A lot of re-hashing, but I can re-watch that movie every year and still have an entertaining time. Jaws 3 is where the franchise started running into a lot of problems, and that shot of the shark slowly gliding into the window is just hilariously bad. And then there's Jaws - The Revenge, which almost makes the third movie look like a masterpiece.

The whole tagline and plot of "This time its personal" is just so stupid. We're talking about a shark that has a personal vendetta against the Brody family (because they killed his three friends?), and not only does he single them out and attack them, he follows them from New England to Bahamas. Where do you even start with that? Then you have Ellen Brody with psychic powers having some sort of connection with the shark (she has flashbacks to events of Jaws that she didn't even witness!), you have the shark roaring like a lion (for some reason).. sharks don't even have vocal chords god damn it!, and the classic ending of our main protagonists ramming the shark with a boat, and it just explodes out of thin air (for some reason). Truly just an awful movie, on so many levels. The 2.8 IMDB rating really says it all.

Batman and Robin
I think most people who have seen this movie will agree that it deserves a mention. The Schumacher Batman movies came out when I was still pretty young, and I was only around 7-8 years at the time. I was actually a fan of Batman Forever, but upon re-watching it as an adult I can totally see and understand that it's not a good movie. But as a young kid at the time, I liked it. But when Batman and Robin came out, even I was baffled. I remember shouting out questions at the screen, and a lot of it didn't make sense to me. The auction scene, Batman having his own credit card, the ice skating part with Mr. Freeze, Batman and Robin having ice-skates built into their boots (for some reason) and a lot of other things.

Upon re-watching it at an older age, especially after the Nolan movies came out, it really is atrocious on so many levels. I love Arnold and he is a bit of a childhood hero for me, but he was just totally miscast as Mr.Freeze. Apart from the 3000 oneliners about ice, it just makes me sad to think that this was his villain follow-up role to Terminator. As bad as Arnold was, I think Uma Thurman was even worse as Poison Ivy. I was young and dumb at the time, and I didn't understand most of what she said, but seeing it as an adult.. WOW. She sounds like a pornstar. Almost all her lines sounds like they were straight out of the XXX parody or something. Just look at some of them: "My garden needs tending", "Some lucky boy is about to hit the honey pot", "Why not send Junior home early? I've got some... wild oats to sow" & "Slippery when wet". Apart from two of the most over-the-top villains ever, and Bane (who is just so bad), we also get George Clooney who doesn't care, bat-nipples, bat-asses and so many other bad things. This honestly feels more like a sequel to the Adam West 60's Batman than anything else.

There are plenty of others, but these two came to mind right away.  :lol

I haven't seen Jaws The Revenge, but Batman & Robin was fairly awful.

However, the thing that bugs me about these threads is that most films mentioned are rarely actually that bad, compared with properly terrible films. Batman & Robin sucked, but far worse things exist - they just usually haven't been seen by many people.

Maybe the point is more that it's the most disappointing films, rather than worst in absolute terms.

Anything with Ben Stiller when he is trying to be funny. He's not.  (besides the Meet the Parents movies which were saved by Robert DeNiro and  Dustin Hoffman)

Anything where Jim Carrey is supposed to be funny.  He's not.  He's a good actor when he is doing real acting.

That's all for now.

I actually think Jaws III is far worse in execution. Jaws 4 has some stupid moments but it doesn't have cardboard cutout shark.

I remember a movie with that title being released, but I never watched it.

Probably because of the title.

BTW, I saw Jaws 3 in a theater, complete with 3D glasses.   :metal

As a massively disappointed fan, I would probably say The Last Airbender. But honestly there are worse. Dragonball Evolution is horrible. But the one I usually answer the question of 'worst movie?' with is Evan the Almighty. Fuck that movie.

Evan Almighty wasn't that bad.  It was just a more family-friendly movie, a different movie altogether than Bruce Almighty.  Not bad per se.

That movie literally made my head hurt. So so bad. :lol

I rewatched SMB last year, and it was pretty bad. Not quite awful, but no redeeming qualities, not even so bad it's good.

Batman and Robin on the other hand, is so bad it's amazing. I'd watch that over the Nolan ones any day of the week.

Weekend at Bernie's 2 is a good choice. The first one was a a funny concept that made for a decent movie. The second one is just shit.

A good day to die hard. As a fan of all the previous Die hard movies (yes even the 4th one) I was excited to finally see one on the big screen, I even paid extra to see it on an imax screen. It was one of the worst movies that I've seen in the theaters. The funny thing about it is that I believe it is the first sequel to be written as a die hard movie from the start, the others started as something else and were turned into a die hard movie. The plot is ridiculous even for die hard standards and manages to work Chernobyl into it. Bruce Willis seems to be in the background most of the time and when he does speak most of his dialog is either one liners that make no sense ("I'm on vacation") or bad and or awkward father/son dialog. One of the complaints about the 4th movie is that John Mclaine was seemingly invincible, and in this one they crank that up to eleven by basically tossing him off and through buildings. To top it all off the movie really has no main villain. Everytime they build someone up to be the big bad of the movie they die shortly after and are replaced by someone else.

I understand  about the last Die Hard. It had nothing in common with the first 4 in style but it's not at the bad level of some other movies. It's bad, just not "That bad".

Yes, I love Batman and Robin for its badness  :lol

While I agree that Batman and Robin was pretty awful, it was a work of cinematic art compared to Batman Forever!

B & R had it's problems, and several other movies shares of problems, but it didn't actually make me want to hurt anyone involved with it.

I wanted to strangle Jim Carrey for his unforgivably awful "portrayal" of the Riddler.

He didn't just chew the scenery, he inhaled it and crapped it back out again.

My pick for the role would have been Harry Anderson. Remember him?

Also, I thought that Val Kilmer was too young at the time to play Batman/Bruce Wayne.

It also seemed that Tommy Lee Jones was just "channeling" Jack Nicholson's version of the Joker to play Two-Face, instead of coming up with a more original character.

I thought George Clooney was a somewhat better Batman, but I would have picked William or Bill Sadler to play Mr. Freeze.

I think with B & R they were trying to be a little more "cartooney" and maybe a little (or even a lot) like the old Batman T.V. series.

Chris O'donnel was okay as Dick Grayson/Robin, but the costume sucked.

My favourite “so bad, it’s good” movie is The Room.

Movies that were just awful:
Catwoman - no explanation needed

Death to Smoochy - this was about the actors behind children’s TV characters plotting to sabotage each other’s careers and kill each other out of competition, or something. Starred Edward Norton and Robin Williams in bottom-of-the-barrel roles. Tremendously unfunny.

Bad Boy Bubby- this one is uniquely, painfully awful. About a man in his 30s who has been locked in his house his entire life by his obese mother, who fucks him nightly. He’s essentially retarded as a result. His dad, a drunk priest, comes home and kicks him out of his mother’s bed. He kills them both and goes out to explore the world. The movie tries to be funny at times, philosophical at others. I just cringed all the way.

Movies which I enjoyed most disproportionately to their “great film/classic” status, and thus rank as uniquely monumentally disappointing experiences:
Pirates of the Caribbean - and I mean the first one. God knows what I’d think of the later ones, if I watched them.
Indiana Jones - the first one. Don’t know which one it is/ what its name is, don’t care.

Yeah, Die Hard With a Vengeance is great. I actually saw that in the theatre with my dad at age 10  :lol

While I agree that Batman and Robin was pretty awful, it was a work of genius compared to Batman Forever!

Very true, but Batman & Robin has way more entertainment value as a "bad" movie.

In related news, last week I went to a local thing called Mile High Sci Fi, which is basically Mystery Science Theater 3000 with live comedians in a movie theatre, and they tackled Batman Forever. It was pretty hilarious. I hadn't seen it since the nineties so I didn't remember it well but holy shit, is it terrible! You're right about Carey- just baad. I wouldn't watch it again without comedians in the room.

Okay, you're crazy on the Death to Smoochy thing. I loooved that movie!

In fact, based on your differing taste I may check out that Bubby one, because it sounds fascinating to me  :lol

I remember very little of it, but the scene with the bag of dick-shaped cookies sealed the deal, I think. I just thought, that might have been funny when I was ten years old. I was flabbergasted that actors of that calibre went for a script with THAT in it.
