I just ordered my first item on Shapeways (a 3D printing service). It's a 5cm/2" high model of my video game character, in purple plastic. Only cost me $7.82US ($11AUS with our crap exchange rate) because it was a free worldwide shipping offer. I can't wait to see how it turns out, but it will be 3+ weeks before I get it.

I don't want to show him until I have a finished playable demo, but he's a purple guy with a big round head and feet and no fingers or toes. I'm still looking to slightly change the design. The figure I'm having printed is just him in a standing pose, with a small circular base.

Shipping is usually $15US to Australia for their cheaper option, which is a big hit on such a small item, although it's not an unreasonable price considering they're shipping often fragile objects.

That's not bad, I've seen much worse international shipping prices than that.

Oh yeah, it's not a bad price at all, but it makes a big difference when the shipping costs twice as much as the item itself.
It's amazing how cheap they can print the item though. It's a lot cheaper than it was when I was first looking into it, and it will only get cheaper as 3D printing becomes more commonplace.

Dark Matter and Killjoys have both been renewed for a second season! Hurray for scifi!

Are those shows actually good?  Most of what I know about SyFy is their wretched films.  And the commercials I saw for those shows did not inspire me at all.

I'd say they're good, not great (at least yet). They're both solid scifi shows with potential to build. I wouldn't say they're must-watch, and they're nothing groundbreaking in the genre, but for a die-hard scifi fan like me, they're worth watching, and it's nice to finally have a few futuristic space shows back on TV.
Would I recommend either of them to you? I'd say no.

I dug the first season of Dark Matter and like I told Blob earlier, Falling Skies just ended on TNT and I loved that series.  So well done.

The novel it's based on (by Arthur C. Clarke) is usually considered one of the paragons of science fiction literature.  It was written in 1953, so I'm not sure I would call it "not very original."  It was, in fact, ahead of its time, so to speak.

That's why I said "at least today". I've seen several shows do it since that now it isn't a very original premise for a new show, even though the novel was written well before all of them. It must be good for so many shows to have copied the idea!

I'm finally getting a raise. Not sure how  much.  I spoke with the owner of the company today (we had a meeting and he plus the regional supervisor were in town)...  pulled him aside on his way out and gave him my thing on how I've been here 3 years and have been in "management" for exactly a year (today is my year anniversary as an assistant supervisor ) and asked if there is any chance I could receive a pay bump. Without hesitation he responded with "Definitely!  You are one of our top guys! Technically you are the most senior employee here.  .. I'll make it happen. Expect an email by Friday!"
