I'll rate the RR records as well.

1: ADToE
2: BC&SL
3: DT12
4: SC

This looks good, but for me there is a lot of seperation from 3 and 4 and not much from 1-3.

I just think that people really like to talk out of their ass as soon as something they considered sacred changes in any way. We live in a world full of cynics, and I'm not just talking about people criticizing DT after Portnoy left, but the other side of the camp as well.
I'm sorry, but while Portnoy was in the band, people loved him, but since he left, I can't count how many comments I've seen claiming that Portnoy was an ego-maniac tyrant who oppressed the band and ruled over it with an iron fist.  ::)

ADTOE>SC>>>BC&SL>>DT12
Roughly, although I do like DT12 and BCaSL a lot aswell, just not as much as the other two.
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Welcome to DTF.

It is only a matter of time before the thread somehow swerves over to discussing Kevin Moore.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

My only criticism for the post-Portnoy albums would be that I think they sound really poor (as in production wise, not the actual music). ADTOE isn't "crisp" enough, and that snare on DT12 ruins the whole thing for me. I don't know if their hearing has been damaged after 30 years of touring or whatever, but I hope their next album sounds better.

Production / Mixing can be difficult when you are so close to a project.  If you are extremely aware of each and every part, your mind can play tricks on you.  That ambient part can be mixed way too low because your mind knows it is there and tends to make compensations for any deficiencies (volume, separation, etc).  Or maybe you think that part is so cool that you tend to mix it too loud to make sure everybody hears it.

Nothing like doing a mix, shelving it, coming back 2 weeks to 2 years and listening again.  There is always a realization that one or two parts are way too prominent.

You need fresh ears all the time if you don't want to let your mind's ear deceive you.
