Best instrumental section in a DT song?
« on: March 06, 2015, 07:36:25 PM »
Best instrumental DT has ever done in a "sung song"? This means we're not counting instrumentals here.
Personally I loove The Reckoning from ITPoE.
But also love The Glass Prison solo section before the last vocal part.

Three honorable mentions for me would be The Count of Tuscany intro, the Octavarium section between Full Circle and Intervals. As well as the solo from Goodnight Kiss.

First one that came to mind was Beyond This Life, but they have so many great instrumental sections.

Two that come to mind are the instrumental break in Light Fuse and Get Away, and the one found in Never Enough, both songs that are regularly overlooked/ignored. Honorable mention goes to the instrumental section beginning at about 13:35 on the original version of ACoS, as heard on the 1993/03/04 official bootleg.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Some of my favorites:

Take the Time (or really, just about any instrumental section from IaW)
Peruvian Skies
Blind Faith
Endless Sacrifice
Octavarium (the section right after Full Circle)
The Dark Eternal Night
Only a prog fan would try to measure how much they enjoy a song by an equation. :lol

My favorites in chronological order:

Take the Time
Metropolis
A Change of Seasons (The Darkest of Winters)
Trial of Tears
Fatal Tragedy
Beyond this Life
Home
Blind Faith
Panic Attack
Sacrificed Sons
Octavarium (between Full Circle and Intervals)
Constant Motion
The Dark Eternal Night
The Ministry of Lost Souls
In the Presense of Enemies (Prelude and The Reckoning)
A Rite of Passage
The Count of Tuscany (all of them)
Bridges in the Sky
Breaking All Illusions
Illumination Theory (The Embracing Circle and in between The Pursuit of Truth and Surrender, Trust & Passion)

My favorite is probably Beyond this Life. The most underrated is The Ministry of Lost a Souls.

Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

Metropolis for me, hands down.

About to Crash (Reprise) gets a good mention from me too, seeing as how I don't expect many to give it the love it deserves.

Really hard question. Off the top of my head, some of my favorites:
The Glass Prison solo section before the outro (probably my definitive favorite. It's brutal and AWESOME.)
Count of Tuscany intro and solo
Octavarium (all instrumental sections)
Metropolis
Home outro (seriously overlooked. That outro is godly.)
Trial of Tears at the Boston Opera House
Illumination Theory (The Embracing Circle and the instrumental ending of The Pursuit of Truth)
Surrender to Reason solo
In the Name of God solo
Learning to Live

There's countless others, but those were the first 10 to pop into my head.

Breaking All Illusions

The outro of Only A Matter Of Time.

The Outcry instrumental break is mindblowing! Metropolis' break is tame compared to that!

YES. Completely forgot to add that one. That's probably my favorite part of the album.

Tough question! Off the top of my head:

LTL - Outro, Part between the F# and the last verse
Metropolis
Trial Of Tears - Deep In Heaven
Scarred - Guitar solos and afterward, outro

If I had to choose one I'd be very torn between the two from LTL and Deep In Heaven. Really torn.

Metropolis is still probably one of my favorites.

However some others deserve a mention:
Learning to Live
Scarred
Lines in the Sand
Beyond This Life
Breaking All Illusions
Illumination Theory (not the classical part, the full band section)
Blind Faith (one of my favorite JP/JR unisons)
The Ministry of Lost Souls
The Best of Times (outro solo)
Another Hand (I know it's a separate instrumental piece leading into The Killing Hand but I wanted to put something from WDADU)

Yep.  A pity that it isn't an outro to a better song.

First one that came to mind was Beyond This Life, but they have so many great instrumental sections.

Yes! This is the very first one that comes to mind for me too. Love every bit it from the riffs, the guitar solo and even the wacky horn patches.

Honourable mentions also go to:
- Scarred
- Lines in the Sand
- Endless Sacrifice
- Sacrificed Sons
- Honor Thy Father
- A Rite of Passage
- Voices
- Blind Faith
- Breaking all Illusions
- The Ministry of Lost Souls
- The Great Debate
- The Glass Prison
- Outcry
- Solitary Shell
- New Millennium
- Peruvian Skies
- Raise the Knife
- Repentance
- Finally Free
- The Bigger Picture

Burning My Soul if you count the '96 version with Hells Kitchen + BMS bridge as the instrumental section.  :D

But seriously I could go on, reminds me how these instrumental sections are one of my favourite parts of the band, and what mostly caught my attention in the first place before I could appreciate other aspects of the band.

Learning To Live, Breaking all Illusions, and In The Name of God are the best.

One I certainly don't like is Outcry. Ruins the song for me.

Overall, the best for me is BAI.  The flow was so smooth and everybody is showcased quite well.

I have some other categories:

Best instrumental in a long epic: Illumination Theory.

Best wankfest instrumental: Endless Sacrifice.

Best I-did-not-see-that-amazing-thing-coming instrumental: Peruvian Skies.

Best moody instrumental: The Mirror.
