Psychedelic/Space Rock
« on: February 26, 2015, 10:41:59 PM »
Obviously this sub-genre of progressive rock is ruled by Pink Floyd.  However there are quite a few other amazing bands that should not go without mention.  For me, bands like Eloy and Nektar are among some of the better bands in the genre.  As I listen to Nektar's A Tab In The Ocean, I can't help but wonder why this band never made it bigger than they did. The title track alone is worth the price of the CD.

Are there any other fans of this style here?

If you're questioning whether or not these bands should even be labeled under this sub-genre, I'm just using the Prog Archives site as a guide.

Earthless is definitely my favorite band in this genre. From the Ages is an incredible album!

Does Hawkwind count?   I only own 1 or 2 vinyl albums from those guys...but I freaking LOVE them....

Ruled?  Pioneered by maybe.

Aside from the obvious Pink Floyd, I have some Hawkwind, Ozric's and a few other bands that don't immediately come to mind right now. I guess I'm a fan, but these are overall a low percentage of the collection.

Space Rock? Amplifier is as good as it gets. I would also highly recommend Spiritualized's album "Ladies and Gentlemen, We are Floating in Space".

Yes, Spiritualized's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space is a great choice. I would also highly recommend the progressive rock group Camel. They have many amazing albums, but Moonmadness and Rain Dances are especially psychedelic and beautiful.

Old Pineapple Theif is very spacey.  I love the moods in their songwriting.

I'll check that out. I've listened to Camel before.  Good stuff.

New double album coming in May. It's probably safe to assume that it's gonna be a trippy album.

RPWL, who started as a Floyd cover band really found their own sound and I would strongly recommend them to any Floyd fan or

Just came here to state my love for Eloy, a band that flies under the radar a lot for no good reason since they are very good at Space Rock.

I also want to recommend a band called Cybotron (the Australian one), they're very unknown and only released 3 records out of which I have only listened to Colossus and I find it very interesting and fun.

Ruined Machines' Pressure & Obsession is a fascinating instrumental post-rock/post-punk/prog?/space rock album. Here's a taste.

Right now I'm listening to The Spacious Mind who are a more recent Space Prog band and they're really good. The music I started writing a couple of days ago definitely has a space rock sound to it. I love the sub-genre immensely for it's ethereal sounds and creative diligence.

Okay, I'll have the conversation with myself.  :lol

I'm checking out this band called The Sun Blindness. They have an album on Spotify that I'm listening to called Like Pearly Clouds. Besides them, I also discovered The Spacious Mind and Oresund Space Collective. I'm falling in love with this genre more and more.

I love space rock, but I find it difficult to locate bands who perform it with the style I enjoy... tbh, it's early Porcupine Tree.

Listened to Up the Downstair, The Sky Moves Sideways, Signify, and Coma Divine on vinyl today. We need a band to carry the torch of this forgotten style. It's too good to just leave behind.

I checked out one of their releases from the 80s and it had that 80s treatment all over it, so I didn't like it as much. It was still good though. Spotify doesn't have all of their old releases so I'm stuck checking them out on YouTube.

A quick funny story. My five-year-old daughter was with me last night and I was listening to Oresund Space Collective. She asked me what that was on the album cover and I told her it looked like a bug or something. I was trying to explain it to her. As I was talking she said, "shhhh daddy, I listening to the music."  :lol   I love it. She's entranced by psychedelic space prog.
