Two immediately come to mind for me: The Bigger Picture, which I think is one of the band's best songs ever, and Only a Matter of Time, which is at least top 25 but never really gets much recognition.

None of these songs are really obscure, so let's get serious.

The Way it Used to Be.  It's the best DT song that no one talks about.

The guitar is like what would happen if The Edge, Tom Scholz, and Jimmy Page's guitar styles got together and had a child (please just nod and move on).  The drums and bass are some of the most musical stuff MP and JM have ever done.  They're never literally melodic, but they feel like it.  The keyboards are almost all background, but the tone is some of the most lush stuff DS ever played.

James LaBrie wrote the lyrics to this one.  Unlike most DT lyrics, which are philosophical, optimistic, or outwardly confrontational, this song is very nostalgic.  It's the only inkling I've seen from DT in any context wondering if they made the right life choices.

Take me back so I can see
the way it used to be

JLB doesn't sing it in a depressive way, which makes it even better.  It captures that wistfulness we all feel and indulge in.

Heard it a few times, but I never tho it was actually underrated.
Btw, am I the only one that doesn't really like Pull me Under? Liek... Metropolis owns it.

I think we would all agree with this, but looking loosly at the subject I think we all know it means songs that are somewhat forgotten, underrated or not really in rotation in DT sets over time.

I have to agree with you completely here.  It's one of my favorite DTsongs and should have definitely been included on FII as opposed to some of the poor choices included (i.e. You Not Me)

Glad to see Light Fuse and Get Away getting some love - definitely an underrated, obscure track - but awesome in my book!
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Although with DT fans, is there really such a thing as obscure?
And I don't know if it is underrated either because most people love it.  It is like a meditation song for me.

Re: LFAGA: It has a lot of cool ideas, some of KM's best work, and Charlie actually hangs in there for a lot of it (the only song he didn't write the lyrics to that this is the case). But that transition into the chorus is completely nonsensical.
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

Very glad to see Light Fuse and Get Away being mentioned so much. Definitely fits the description for the topic. Love that verse riff; as simple as it may be.

Other slightly obscure/underrated but awesome songs for me:
Honor Thy Father
A Rite of Passage
Anna Lee
Profits of War

All of Cleaning out the Closet.

And this. Everything on that album reflects a slightly obscure aspect of DT, and makes for an overall very obscure (yet awesome) selection of songs.

"Don't Look Past Me", and I can't believe I am the first to mention it. It's one of my favorite B-Sides and it really should have been on IAW.

I'd also like to vote for the original '96 Demo version of "Take Away My Pain", such a beautiful song before it got changed.

And I'll echo sentiments towards "Eve" as well.
