Dream Theater - Through The Eyes of a Child
« on: January 25, 2015, 06:01:27 AM »
I've listened to DT since a young age, and, at that young age, I didn't hear a lot of the words correctly. Although as I have grown to the ripe old age of 16, I now understand the lyrics, I wanted to find out if this happened to other children. Fortunately, I have a cousin. He is 7, and I gave him the challenge of writing down what he thought the lyrics to some of these songs were. I think the results are pretty good, personally, although some of the things he wrote aren't actual words...
The first song is "Prophets of war"

It burns deep down inside of me,
We have ourselves to be.
Not questioning, accept it as the truth.

Debate this flag it's just cause
The flags do not support theirs
To liberate a people
Living of time and drool -- What?

Is it time to make a change?
Are we closer than before?
Can we help them break away?
Are we profiting from war?

It's time to make a change.

Intrigued
Got your attention - deceived
Since the inception - our brave
Fight for one reason

Look out
Can we clean up this mezz
The loss of loved ones
A cravess rewest
They continue us in red of wreck
These derelicts that profit
With our loose

Is it time to make a change?
Are we closer than before?
Can we help them break away?
Are we profiting from war?
It's time to make a change

Time for change
Fight the fear
Find the truth
Time for change

The only thing
That I believe
Will help us see this through this thing
Pray they will forgive,
Forgive our arrogance,
So we can make it right,
Right for they have none

See sweat
Unexpected, controversial
Get used to it
Things are gonna get real you know
Your sympathy
A pitiful display you statta
No empaffy
There's nothing if there is no odd a
Responsible
Unless you are incapable
We implicate
Incinerate, Exasperate too much on stake

Harvest mothers
Sisters, Brothers
Sons and Daughters
Lost
Le Butcheree A mindless act
To stave course

Is it time to make a change?
Are we closer than before?
Can we help them break away?
Are we profiting from war?

Is it time to make a change?
Are we closer than before?
Can we help them break away?
Are we profiting from war?
Is it time to make a change?
A change from what it's been
Can we help them break away?
Is our patience wearing thin?
It's time to make a change

Time for change
Fight the fear
Find the truth
Time for change

There you go!
I think he did pretty well, personally.

This is how we can verify his innocence.  :lol
Only a prog fan would try to measure how much they enjoy a song by an equation. :lol

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I thought Metallica's Sad But True was called Sand Patrol. That's the only example I can give.

My cute little sis used to walk around the house singing Why Can't This Be Love by Van Halen.

Instead of "I'll be damned if I get hung up on the line" she liked "I'll be dead and fuckin hung up on the line"  ;D

When I was little, I used to sing "Only One Way To Rock" by Hagar and would say the line "To me it's all just mental masturbation" not knowing what I was talking about.

You know, I'm pretty sure the only reason I thought it was Sand Patrol was because of Enter Sandman. I thought The Black Album was a concept album before I knew what a concept album was. Then you have the Cowboy western song, The Unforgiven...... and of course:

Struggle Within
It suits you fine
Struggle Within
Your ruin
Struggle Within
You seal your own GOTHIC

That makes absolutely no sense, but that's what I thought for a very, very long time.

No but this kind of was.

I was always horrible at hearing lyrics when I was a kid.

Here's my "We're Not Gonna Take It" lyrics (from like 17 years ago).  I still remember them, because I always joke with my family about the lyrics, I used to sing this song all the time when I was a kid.

We're not gonna take it.  Hello!
We ain't gonna take it.
We're not gonna take it...anymore
We've got the right to chose it
There ain't no way we lose it
This is our life
This is our song
We'll fight the Bowsers be just
Don't pick our destiny cause
You don't know worse
You don't belong
We're not gonna take it.  Hello!
We ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it...anymore.
Oh you're so con descending (I had no idea what it meant, but I thought it was two words)
Your goal is never ending
We don't want nothing, nothing from you
Your life is crynojated (no idea)
Boring and confiscated
Is that your best
Your best won't do
Woah...woah.
We're right...yeah!
We're free...yeah!
We'll fight...yeah!
Be you'll see...yeah!
Woah woah we're not gonna take it.  Hello!
We ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it...anymore.
We're not gonna take it.  Hello!
We ain't gonna take it.
We're not gonna take it...anymore.
No way!

Rest of the song is self explanatory.  I have others, but I don't feel like posting them now.

For some reason I thought this thread was going to be about an early and more commercial "Through Her Eyes" version made in the Falling into Infinity days.

I thought The Doobie Brother's "China Grove" was "Vagina Road" when I was a kid and couldn't understand why they let it on the radio. Liked the song even though I had the words wrong

That's pretty tricky with that accent. You oughta be on fucking TV with that accent.
