Looking for some hard, heavy prog metal
« on: January 22, 2015, 12:45:12 PM »
What better place to ask than here?

I'm in a metal kind of mood at the moment. I am looking for some dark, heavy, hard prog metal. Something in the vein of DT's As I Am (first couple of minutes). The song "Seize the night" by Mercenary also hits a sweetspot. "Fistful of Sand" by Redemption.

Are you with me?

I've been listening to various stuff for an hour now, but I seem to always end up in melodeath-land. That's ok, but I'm not too keen on the growling.

So, do you have any suggestions?  :metal

From the latest releases I would recommend Need - Orvam: A Song For Home. Dark, heavy and hard prog metal indeed.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

That Need album is all kinds of fun. I can't find much about the band but the digital download on Amazon is quite reasonable...I'm gonna order it when I get home.

Thanks Evermind!

Might help if you give us a list of stuff you already know, so we don't recommend it to you again.

Well I notice a lack of Triosphere, who are amazing and pretty heavy. Here's a song from their newest album if you're interested.

Try some Redemption -  Mortal Coil and Snowfall on Judgement Day are great.

Not bad. I loved the James Bond-theme halfway through the title track.  :lol

Sorry, didn't mean to ignore you or anything. :) I knew most of the stuff you recommended, but thanks anyway!

Riverside - Second Life Síndrome and Anno Domini High Definition
I know Riverside, I have ADHD and have heard SLS too. They're good, but not what I was looking for.
Haken - The Mountain
I've tried to get into these guys, multiple times, but they're really not my cup of tea.
Tool - Lateralus
An old favorite of mine. Parabol/Parabola...  :metal
Devin Townsend - Accelerated Evolution
I've never gotten into Devin either. Tried several of his albums. This one, Physicist, Terria... nope, not for me.
Circus Maximus - Nine
The first one was good. The next one was ok. This one...nah.
OSI - Blood
In my shelf. Not as good as OSI1, but ok.
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
I love PT, and everything Steven Wilson. I have played this album to death.

Destiny Potato - Lun
I think it's a bit unfair of me to judge this yet. It is really complex with a lot of stuff going on, and I think I need to get it somewhat under my skin before I say anything. So far I think it's alright, I like the vocals, but I'm really not that keen on the djent-sound. Oh, and they have like the worst band name ever.  :lol
David Maxim Micic - Bilo 1.0
Naaaah....

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions, guys. I've had some fun hours listening to new stuff. :tup Feel free to recommend me more if you want.  Maybe more steady groove and less prog, though. I know I asked for prog metal, but I might have to re-think that part... Listen to the first two minutes of As I Am (before James joins in...) for inspiration.

Don't worry about the djentish sound, they have it in small doses. And it will grow on you - I just love the sound they use. And the female pop vocals also  ;) .

I'd recommend you Bilo 2.0 - far less djent and more experimentation, with some jazz and electronic elements. And metal of course.

Forgot to recommend ya The Dark Third, by Pure Reason Revolution. And Obsidian Kingdom's Mantiis. Amazing prog metal there.

And for Devin, you can try Addicted. It's like pop-metal, really catchy and with smart songwriting.
